3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved paint brush jacket formed of thin sheet metal or similar stiff material.
The object of my invention is to provide a paint brush jacket of simple, durable and inexpensive construction that is so constructed and arranged that a paint brush (either cleaned or uncleaned) may be easily and quickly inserted in the jacket, and when so placed provide means whereby the brush and jacket may be inserted in a preservative liquid to keep the bristles of the brush in a soft and pliable condition, and at the same time maintain the bristles in proper shape for easy and efiicient operation.
More particularly it is the object of my invention to provide for each brush an independent jacket having walls formed of sheet metal or similar material without perforations or slots, except a small slot at the bottom, whereby a number of individual jackets, each having a brush with a color of paint different from that of another brush may be placed in a preservative liquid of a single container without danger of mixing the colors.
A further object of my invention is to provide in that type of paint brush jacket for receiving the bristles of a paint brush to be immersed in. a preservative liquid, improved handle means for the jacket, adapted to be used in conjunction with the brush handle so that they may be easily grasped simultaneously to facilitate the placing of jacket and brush into and out of said liquid without soiling the hands; and in connection therewith, improved means for maintaining the brush in proper alignment within the jacket so that the bristles will set in symmetrical formation.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated and attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved jacket with the front side moved to open position.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of my improved jacket with a paint brush in position therein.
Figure 3 is an end elevation of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of a paint brush container showing two of my improved brush jackets supported therein, the end of said jackets being removed.
My improved paint brush jacket is preferably formed of thin sheet metal comprising a back It and triangular shaped side members II and I? mounted at right angles to the back It). The free edge of the side I2 is rolled to form hinge barrels [3. The free edge of the side I l is formed with a tubular bead Id. The back it has formed. on its lower edge an inwardly inclined flange'or shelf [5. A front member is provided having one, edge formed with a hinge barrel H. The opposite edge of the front is doubled upon itself to form a reinforcing strip I8 adapted to engage the inner and under side of the head is when the front is closed, which forms a wedge shaped receptacle. The lower edge of the front I6 is also provided with an inwardly inclined flange or shelf l9, a slight space 28 being provided between the lower edges of the shelves.
A handle and leg member 2! is formed from a single piece of wire. The wire is bent at its central portion to form a contracted bight 2'2 and substantiallyparallel portions 23 and 26, said portions being bent forwardly along the top edges of the side members H and 12, thence downwardly. The member 25 serves as a pin for the hinge barrels while the portion 23 is threaded through the bead It, the lower ends of the portions 23 and 26 extending beyond the members. l3 and It to form supporting legs 25. The bight 22 is bent forwardly to form a bifoliate 26 for receiving the handle 27 of a paint brush 23, the parts being so proportioned that the longitudinal center of the brush handle will be supported in the longitudinal center of the jacket. The handle is supported loosely in the bifoliate to permit the chisel or pointed end 29 of the bristles to rest on the shelves l5 and 9 at times when the jacket is in an upright position as illustrated in Figure 5.
In the practical use of my improved brush jacket, a suitable container 35 is provided having a preservative liquid such as oil or turpentine iii. The jacket is usually placed on a flat surface such as a table after which the front it is swung to an opened position as illustrated in Figure l. The bristle portion of the brush is then placed on the back I0 and between the side members I2 and [3 with the chisel end 29 slightly above the shelves l5 and IS with the handle 29 in the bifoliate 26.
The front It is then moved to closed position with its free edge beneath the head It, the side member I I yielding outwardly to permit the end to pass said bead. This provides means for frictionally holding front closed. The jacket may then be lifted by grasping the handle 21 and the bight 22, and then placing the jacket in an upright position with the lower end of the legs 25 resting on the bottom of the container 30. The jackets may be supported in an upright position by rods 32 or by leaning one against the other.
When the brushes are placed in an upright position while in oil or turpentine the heavy paint ingredients tend to work downwardly to the lower end of the bristles by gravity. The slot 20 permits any such ingredients 33 to settle to the bottom of the container 30, thus keeping the lower end of the brush free of any solidifying of said ingredients as would be the case if the lower end of the jacket were closed tightly. The tapering front and back members of the jacket tend to maintain the bristles in a tapered condition while the shelves l and I9 tend to maintain a chiseled end which is so much desired by painters and decorators.
By having the entire front of the jacket open, the brush may be easily placed in position with jacket in a horizontal position with the bristles entirely within the jacket before the front is closed, thus preventing bending, shearing or distorting the bristles by closing the front. The brush may be removed by imparting tortional force to handle 21 about its longitudinal axis, causing the edge 18 to be released from the bead l4.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided an improved brush jacket of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, so constructed and arranged that a brush may be easily and quickly placed in position, and when so placed in a preservative liquid the original shape may be maintained even after the bristles have been worn as illustrated by the shorter brush of Figure 5.
I claim:
1. A paint brush jacket including a back, triangular sides, and a front, one of the side edges of said front being hinged to the front edge of one of said side members to form a door, means for frictionally securing the free edge of said door to the front edge of the other side member, a combined handle and leg element comprising a single piece of wire formed with a contracted bight portion to form a handle and substantially parallel leg portions, one of said leg portions providing as a hinge pin for said door and the other leg portion serving to reinforce the front edge of the other triangular side member; the bight portion of the handle including a raised bifoliate portion open at one side to loosely receive the handle of the brush to center the handle in longitudinal and central alignment with said jacket.
2. A paint brush jacket including a back, and triangular sides, the front edge of one of said sides terminating in a tubular bead, the front edge of the other side in a plurality of hinge barrels, a door for closing said jacket having one edge provided with a hinge barrel in alignment with the first said hinge barrels, the opposite edge of said door being folded back upon itself to provide a reinforcing edge frictionally engaging said bead when closed, the lower edge of the door and back being inclined inwardly with their free edges slightly spaced apart to form shelves to support the chisel edges of the brush loosely mounted between said door and back, a combined leg and handle member comprising a single wire looped to form a contracted bight, to provide a handle, and substantially parallel portions mounted adjacent to the top edges of said sides and through said bead and hinge barrel with their ends projecting beyond their lower ends to form supporting legs, said bight including a forwardly extending bifoliate to loosely receive the handle of said brush to maintain the brush in alignment with the central longitudinal axis of said jacket when the brush is mounted in said jacket.
3. A paint brush jacket including a back, a front, and parallel triangular side walls to form a tapered container adapted to be supported with its large end uppermost, having the lower edges of its front and back walls further inclined inwardly to form shelves, with their free edges slightly spaced apart to form a slot, said container having downwardly extending legs and an upwardly extending handle of substantially U-shaped and rigidly fixed to said container, the sides near the bight being bent forwardly to form a handle retainer with the bight providing the back and the forwardly bent portions the sides for loosely holding a brush supported in said container in an upright and centered position, with the chiseled edge of the brush resting on said shelves whereby the weight of the brush will tend to press the ends of the bristles together to maintain a chiseled edge.
