' P. A. ROSS! ATTACHMENT FOR PAIINTBRUSHES Filed April 1928 MM 6 /6 4 P068: INVE\;|TOR
' ATTORNEQY WITNESS:
Patented Nov. 13, 1928.
PAUL A. ROSSL OF CAMPBELL. OHIO.
ATTACHMENT FOR. PAINTBRUSHES.
Application filed April 3, 1928. Serial No. 267,018.
This invention relates to brushes and has particular relation to means for catching paint which drips from the bristles and runs down along the head and handle of the 6 brush, especially when the brush is used in overhead work.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which may be removably attached to a brush so as to permit of its use with other brushes, and its manufacture and sale independent of the brush. 7
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device, which in addition to the above and other advantageous features, is simple and economical in construction, may be readily attached to or removed from a brush, and which combines in its construction a hanger hook by means of which the V 2 brush may be supported upon the edge of a pot or pail, or suspended from a nail or hook.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction,
to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation of a brush with the handle broken away and the invention applied.
Figure 2 is an edge view with the invention in section. I
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevation of the meeting ends of the band with the clamping members separated.
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the meeting ends of the band separated.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the manner of clamping together the meeting ends of the band.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the head of a brush to which the invention is applied. The invention comprises a band 11 which is adapted to surround the brush head and which preferably has one of its walls outwardly flared to rovide a. relatively wide open trough adacent the inner ends of the bristles, when the device is applied to a-brush. The band 11 forms the outer Wall of the trough while the outer surface of the brush head forms the inner wall, the construction providingfor an economy of material. Secured to the inner face of the band by any suitable means such as is indicated at 12, is a rubber or other compressible strip 13. This strip yieldingly and frictionally engages the brush head and forms the bottom of the trough, as can be plainly seen from Figure 2 of the drawing. The band is split as shown in Figures 3 to rss PATENT oFF cE.-.
6 of the drawing. and one of its ends is provided with an extension 14 which engages behind or underlaps the adjacent edge of the band as shown in Figure 3. This end of the band has hingedly secured thereto a loop 15 which is adapted to enter a relatively flat loop 16 hingedly secured to the opposite edge of the band. As shown in Figure 6 of the drawing, the loop 15 is inserted within the loop 16 and the loop 15 is then swung over upon the end of the band to which it is attached, so that the ends of the band will be drawn closely together and the underlapped portion or extension 14 will form a leakproof 'joint. w
This manner of connecting the ends of the band also acts to tightly press the strip 18 ,against the brush head so that the band will securely grip said head and a leakproof joint provided between the strip and head. As is obvious, the device may be readily removed and applied to another brush.
One edge of the band 11 is provided with I an extension 17 which is spaced fromthe brush head and which may be engaged over the edge of a pot or pail so that the brush may be suspended from the edge of the pot or pail with the bristles extending downward. This forms a convenient way of supporting the brush when the latter is not in use, or of holding the brush in water or other softening solution. The extension 17' may be provided with an opening 18 so that if desired the brush may be hung upon a nail or hook.
The invention is susceptible of various the head of the brush, a com ressihle strip 10 chan es in its form, proportions and minor connecting the brush head and and adjacent detai s of construction and the right is herein one edge of the latter and defining a trough, reserved to make such changes as properly and means pivotally attached to the ends 5 fall within the scope of the appended claim. of the split band to connect said ends, com- Having described the invention what is press the strip and clamp the latter around 15 claimed is I the brush head.
