UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
OSCAR T. PETZOLD, OF SEBNITZ, SAXONY, GERMANY.
FUNNEL.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 256,040, dated April 4, 1882, Application filed September 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR THEODOR PET- ZOLD, of Sebuitz, Saxony, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Funnel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a funnel which is so constructed that the flow of the liquid from the same can be interrupted immediately at anydesired time, thus preventing loss and waste of the liquid in filling bottles and casks.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,in
which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
' Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of my improved funnel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec tional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan v;ew of the same. Fig. 4is a horizontal crosssectional view on the line as 00, Fig. l.
The vessel A, which may be of any suitable shape for a funneLis provided with a slightlytapering neck, B, which is surrounded by a sleeve, 0, of rubber, extending almost to the bottom of this neck. This rubber sleeve causes the neck to fit well in a bottle-head, 850., into which this neck is passed. A cap, D, with large side apertures, E,fits closely on the lower uncovered end of the neck B, and is attached to a tube, F, passing through the bottom of this cap, through the neck B, and extending up to the upper edge of the vessel A.
The cap D is provided with a packing-strip, G, of wood, cork, rubber, &c., on the upper surface of its bottom, this packing-strip resting against the lower edge of the funnel, tube, or neck B when the cap D is raised. The upper end of the tube F passes through a slot, H, in a lever, J, pivoted to the upper edge of the vessel A, directly above the handle K, so that this lever can easily be operated by the thumb of the hand holding the funnel. A pivoted connecting-rod, L, connects the inner end of the leverJ and the tube F. The vessel A maybe provided with scale-marks 0, so that it can be used as a measure.
The operation is as follows: If the parts are in the position shown, the liquid can flow from the vessel A through the neck or tube B, and from the lower end of the latter through the apertures E E of the cap D. Ifthe outer end of the leverJ is depressed,as indicated by the arrow, the tube F will be raised and the packing-strip G will be pressed against the lower edge of the neck or tube B, thus closing the same and interrupting the flow of the liquid. By releasing the lever J more or less the lower end of the tube or neck B will be opened more or less. The air contained in the vessel being filled passes off through the tube F.
Having thus described myiuvention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a funnel having neck B,of the side apertured cap D,fitting over the end of said neck, the tube F, passing through and made fast to the bottom of said cap, extending up to the top of funnel, and bent about the middle, and the lever J, connected by a pivoted rod with the tube and slotted at H to receive the upper end of tube, as and for the purpose specified.
