Buttle-Stoppers.

PATENT OFFICE HENRY s. LEsEER, oE NEw YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144.777, dated November 18, 1873; application tiled September 30, 1873.
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a tubular flanged wooden stopper fastened in the mouth of a bottle by means of a cap and clamp or wire, and in a hollow tube inserted in said stepper, and connected by a bail with arubber valve or stopper within the bottle, all substantially as and for the purposes hereinafter set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invent-ion appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal section of a bottle, with my improved stopper placed in the same.
A represents a bottle constructed in any of of the known and usual ways. ln the mouth of this bottle is inserted a close-fitting hollow wooden stopper, B, which is provided with an exterior circumferential flange, a, resting upon the end of the bottle, as shownf The stopper B is conined to the bottle A by means of a capLO, made of Vtin-foil, thin sheet metal, or other suitable material, and fastened around the neck of the bottle by a clamp, b, or a wire or cord, or its equivalent, the object being not only to confine the stopper to the bottle, but also to make a tight joint, and prevent any liquid from escaping between the bottle and the stopper. D represents a hollow tube inserted in and through the wooden stopper B, and provided at its lower end with a bail, d,
which has a nut formed in its center or lower end. Through this is passed a screw, h, which has a rubber valve, G, attached to it in any suitable manner, the valve being of such size as to ll, when raised up, the neck of the bottle and close thc lower end of the stopper B. *The valve G need not necessarily be made of rubber, but may be made of cork or any other suitable material.
When the tube D is pressed in, in the position lshown in the drawing, the b'ottle can readily be filled with any liquid desired; and, to prevent the tube from falling down into the bottle, the interior of the hollow stopper, as well as the tube, may be made tapering; and, in addition thereto, or in lieu thereof, a head, x, may be formed around the upper end of the tube to form a stop against the upper end of the stopper. As the bottle is getting nearly full, the tube is drawn gradually up until, when full, the valve Gwill close the lower end of `the stopper B, and the gases evolved from the liquid, pressing upward, will keep said valve closed.
rlhe tube may be pushed in by hand, allowing the gases to escape, when the liquid may be poured out without removing the stopper.
Hcving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hollow wooden stopper B, combined with tube D, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The within-described bottle-stopper, consisting of the hollow wooden stopper B, tube D, cap C, valve G, and bail d, all constructed and arranged in the manner specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
