PIPE FOR SMOKING TOBACCO Filed March 22, 1948 IiijJiit-Jjij)-' T INVENTO R; I: fizz/mix may ATTD R N EYE Patented July 10, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PIPE FOR SMOKING TOBACCO William E. Lindorfer, Detroit, Mich.
Application March 22, 1948, Serial No. 16,222
This invention relates to improvements in pipes for smoking tobacco.
An object of the invention is to provide a pipe having a tubular insert therein, and an apertured or grooved plug in the insert which, providing more than one aperture through which the smoke is drawn, will prevent bits of tobacco and tobacco juice from being drawn into the smokers mouth.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of a pipe for smoking tobacco partly in section to show how the embodiment of the invention is positioned.
therein;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse, sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the plug; and
Figure 5 is an end view of Figure 4.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral l0 designates the bowl portion of a pipe for smoking tobacco and H the bit of the pipe. The stem portion 12, attached to the bowl, is provided with a passageway l3, of a, size to receive the rear portion of the metal tubular insert 14. The bit H of the pipe is provided with a similar passage Hi to receive the forward portion of the insert M. An annular enlargement l6 of the same overall circumference as the stem portion I2, is formed on the insert 14 and when the insert is in position, the enlargement is abutted on one side by the end of the stem portion 12, and on the opposite side by the end of the bit portion II.
The rear portion of the insert [4 extends from the forward end of the stem portion to the inner surface of the bowl of the pipe.
A metal plug I! of the same size as the interior of the insert [4 is inserted into the rear portion of the insert 14. The plug, at its rear marginal edge, is provided with an annular flange l8 of the same size as the insert 14. This flange prevents the plug from being'inserted too far into the insert.
The plug is provided wth three semi-circular longitudinally extending grooves I9, which are radially spaced from each other in the outer surface of the plug.
On the flanged end of the plug, there is provided a knob 20 which is grasped by the fingers to permit the plug to be pulled out of the insert for the cleaning thereof.
1 Claim- (Cl. 131-201) In use, the plug I1 is inserted into the insert l4, and the stem portion 12, on the bowl I0, is then fitted on the rear portion of the insert, and pushed forwardly until the stem abuts the enlargement IS. The bit is then fitted on the forward portion of the insert until the rear end thereof abuts the enlargement IS.
The pipe is then ready for use.
By providing a plurality of apertures or grooves to create suction on the tobacco in the bowl in the act of the smoking thereof, less tobacco bits and tobacco juice is drawn to the smokers mouth.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the manner of construction and the result obtained by the use of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A pipe for smoking tobacco comprising a bowl, a stem portion on the bowl and a bit portion, there being a bore in the stem portion of the bowl and a bore in one end of the bit portion, a tubular metal insert in the bores, an enlargement on the insert positioning the stem portion and the bit portion so that the insert extends entirely through the stem portion, a grooved plu insertable into one end of the tubular insert, a flange on the plug adapted to engage the end of the insert in the bowl to prevent insertion of the plug too far into the insert, and a knob on the flanged end of the plug to facilitate removal of the plug for the cleaning thereof.
