Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JANE PHILLIPS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUFF.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,582, dated September 27, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JANE PHILLIPS, of the` city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Muff; and I do hereby decl-are that theI following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
The object of this invention is to make a muff serve not only as an article to keep the hands warm but also as a receptacle for such articles which it is desirable to have in convenient reach; and my invention consists in arranging a muff with its outside covering or shell cut open so as to give access to the space between said shell and the interior part of the inuif, which (space) forms a receptacle for the handkerchief, or other similar articles, and between the stutiing of the mufl I have secured a porte monnaie, which is thus rendered perfectly safe, and secure from loss.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
The muif, A, is constructed in the usual manner, its inner part, B,between the lining, and the shell being stuffed with feathers or any other suitable material. The covering or shell, O, is secured to the inner part at the ends only so that an annular space, a, is formed, and a cut, Z9, is made into said covering, which gives access to the annular space, a. The ends of the cut, Z), are united by means of buttons, 0, and loops, CZ, or in any other convenient manner, so that articles which may be stored away in said annular space, a, can easily be reached.
Secured to the inner part, B, of the mulf, and placed between the stuffing is a porte monnaie, D, nothing of the same being visible except the lock e. When the cut 1n the shell, C, is buttoned up or otherwise closed, this porte monnaie is entirely concealed and there is no possibility of its ever being lost by accident or abstracted by a pick-pocket unless the whole muff goes with it. By these means the porte monnaie, and the pockethandkerchief, and other similar articles can be kept always on hand when needed and the wearer of the muff is not compelled to keep a constant lookout lest said articles might be lost or abstracted.
The appearance of my muif is exactly the same as that of other muffs without my improvements, and if the cut, Z), is buttoned up or closed and turned toward the body of the wearer, no other person, except the wearer, will be aware of the existence of this cut, and of those articles which it may conceal.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture, is
A muff, A, arranged with a cut, I), in its outside covering or shell, an annular space or pocket a', and a porte monnaie, D, secured in its inner part, the whole conw structed in thev manner and for the purpose specified.
