Description

UNITED 4STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER F. WOOD, OF BALDWYN, MISSISSIPPI.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 255,748, dated March 28, 1882.
l Application tiled December 5, 1881. .(Model.) l
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, OLTVEE F. WOOD, of Baldwyn, in the county ot' Lee and State ot' Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
` My invention relates to an improvement in ear-couplings; and it consists in pivoting in the lower end of the pin a supporting rod or brace which will close up out of the way as thepin drops down into position, but which will automatically open when the pin is raised and form a support to hold the pin in a raised position, there being a recess formed in the rear side ofthe pin to receive the rod when the pin is dropped, and a suitable shoulder or oft'- set formed on both the rod and in the end' of the pin to prevent the rod from falling too far forward, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to attach aV support for the coupling-pin directly to thepin itself, so as to dispense with all'such supports as are generally placed in the draw-head.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of myinvention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of my invention.
A represents a draw-head, and B an extenbrakeman having to go between the cars in coupling. To the inner end otthis lever is attached the coupling-pin F, which has a shoulder, G, formed on its lower inside end or corner, for the purpose ot' catching over the. link and holding it in position when the cars run together. In the rear side of the end ot this pin is made a suitable recess, H, and in this recess is pivoted the supporting-brace I. This brace is provided on its upper end with a shoulder, J, which abuts against a corresponding shoulder or projection, O, on the lower end of the pin, so that the brace can only dropdownward a suitable distance. When the pin is raised this brace drops downward, and, catching againstthe bottom of the draw-head, forms a support for the pin until the link enters and knocks the brace to one side. As the link is drawn backward against the rear edge of the pin the brace is closed up in its slot and remains in that position until the pin is drawn upward by its lever. This brace, being pivoted directly to the pin, cannot be displaced while the cars are in lnotion or removed from the draw-head, but is always ready for operation.'
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a car-coupling, the combination of the draw-head A, extension B, standard C, lever D, pin Rand rod I, the pin and rod being provided with shoulders O J to prevent the rod from falling too far forward, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER FRANCIS WOOD.
