TOP FOR SIRUP-PITCHERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,692, dated March Application filed March 5, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHAS. H. TALLMAN and BENJ. F. DAY, of Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tops for Sirnp-Pitchers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of our invention is the production of a neat, cheap, and durable top for sirup-pitchers; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts, each stamped out of a single piece of sheet metal, in securing the neck or nose piece and the body together without solder, and in the means employed for hinging the cover to the neck or nose piece, all as more fully hereinafter described.
For the better comprehension of our invention reference should be made tothe accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of our sirup-piteher top complete; Fig. 2, a view of the blank for the cover as stamped out; Fig. 3, a view of the same blank with the thumb-piece turned up into proper position and the upper hingeears turned down, the lower hinge-plate and spring in position; Fig. 3%, a View of the neck or nose' piece stamped out with the horizontal flange alone; Fig. 4, a view of the neck ornose piece as stamped out, showing both the horizontal and vertical flange; Fig. 5, aview of the body as stamped out, and Fig. 6 a view of the lower hinge-plate as stamped out.

The body A, which consiss of a single piece stamped out of sheet metal in suitable dies, is cylindrical in form, having a horizontal flange, a, at its top, leaving a circular opening, a. The neck or nose piece B is also stamped out of sheet metal in suitable dies, with a horizontal flange, b, at its lower side, and two slits, b b at its rear end, which may be made in stamping before or afterward. By a second mechanical operation the inner edge of the flange bis turned down into a vertical flange, I), which is of the precise size to flt into the opening c of the body A. The two pieces being thus fitted together, the flange I) being inserted into the opening a and extending a little below the flange a, by suitable mechanism the lower part of the flange b is forced over the edges of the flange a, and the parts are thus firmly clamped and secured together without solder. The cover C is also stamped in suitable dies out of sheet metal with thumb-piece c and hinge-ears c c. The thumb-piece in the act of stamping may be turned up sufficiently, but the hinge-ears are preferably turned down at right angles after the stamping. The lower hinge-plate, D, has hinge-ears cl (1 at the ends, which are turned at right angles, leaving its body 61 of a length and width to fit into the slits b W. In fitting this cover to the neck or nose piece B we find it convenient first to put in the hinge-pin 6 through the ears 0 c d d, and through the spiral springf, and afterward insert the body d of the lower hinge-plate in the slits b b and then solder the two parts together. By these means we are able to furnish a neat, cheap, and durable top for sirup-pitchers.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein is 1. The neck or nose piece B, with flanges b b, stamped in one piece out of sheet metal, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the neck or nose piece B,with flanges b L, and the body A,with flange a. and circular opening a, the flange b of the neck or nose piece B being designed and adapted to fit into the circular opening of the body A, substantially as described.
3. The lower hinge-plate, D, with hingeears d d, in combination with the neck or nose piece B, having the slits 1) b substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination, with the cover 0, of the neck or nose piece B and lower hingeplate, D,substantially as described.
5. The combination of the cover 0, the neck or nose piece B, thelower hinge-plate, D, and the hinge-pin e and spiral spring f, substantially as described.
