c. s. BARON. MOLASmES JUG AND OTHER HINGED LID REGEPTAOLE.
APPLIOATIQK FILED JAN. 18, 1909.

F w I I WITNESSES CHARLES S. BARON, OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
MOLASSES-J'UG ANDO'IHER HINGED-LID RECEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Application filed. January 18, 1909. Serial No. 472,952.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BARON, of Tiffin, in the county of Seneca, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molasses-Jugs and other Hinged-Lid Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce improvements in devices of the general description shown in the co-pending application of James F. Halfey. In the application referred to, provision is made for flexibly uniting a lid to its receptacle, wherein a knuckle-piece is united to the lid and a pintle-piece is united to the receptacle.
By my present invention, I obtain all of the advantages of the hinge connection specified in the Haffey device and some addi tional advantages by the reversal of the relationship of the hinge members to the lid and receptacle, respectively, that is to say, in my device I provide for the engagement of the knuckle-piece with the receptacle and of the pintle-piece with the lid, and thereby obtain structural advantages which are esteemed to be important and valuable.
In the accompanying drawing, which 0011- stitutes a part of this specification, Figure I is a side elevation of my invention as applied to a molasses jug, showing, in full lines, the lid in the closed position, and, in dotted lines, the lid raised. Fig. II is a top plan view of the subject matter of Fig. I with the lid removed, and showing the knuckle strap surrounding the lateral projection or handle upon the receptacle. Fig. III is a detail side elevation of the subject matter of Fig. I, showing the pintle and knuckle strap in engagement, but before the ends of the knuckle strap are bent to engage the pintle for the completion of the hinge. Fig. IV is a rear elevation, partially in elevation, of the subject matter of Fig. I showing particularly the means of uniting the tailpiece of the lid and its pintle-piece. Fig. V is a plan view of my preferred knuckle strap blank, extended flat, that is to say, in the shape in which it is struck out of the sheet of metal, and showing in dotted lines the points at which it is bent to fit the receptacle handle and to form the knuckle.
Referring to the numerals on the drawing, 1 indicates a receptacle provided with a neck 2, a lip 3, and a handle 4, all preferably made integral with each other and usually made of fragile material, the material employed for the purpose being glass. The handle 4, in respect to its function, is representative of a lateral projection from the neck 2.
5 indicates a lid, which may be made of projection or handle 1 grooves 12, which may be disposed upon opposite sides of the handle or otherwise, as preferred. The knuckle strap is preferably made of a piece of sheet metal of a length to snugly encircle the lateral projection or handle 4: at that point thereof to which it is united, so that when its opposite ends are brought into juxtaposition they will meet substantially as shown in Fig. III of the drawing.
The knuckle strap blank is formed adjacent to its opposite ends with lugs 15 and 16, as shown in Fig. V, which, when bent, collectively form a single continuous knuckle 8. The lugs 15 and 16 are formed into a knuckle by bending them about a pintle 9 comprised in a pintle-piece 10 that is secured to the lid 5.
The pintle-piece 10 preferably consists of a piece of wire bent, as indicated at 20 and 21, to form legs 22 and 23 that are fastened to the tail-piece 6 as by inbent lugs 25 and 26 upon the tail-piece that are formed about said legs. The ends of the legs may be bent inwardly, as shown at 27 in Fig. IV of the drawing, or they may be disposed of in any preferred manner, provided preferably that they be covered and protected against obtrusion by the tail-piece.
The space between the bends 20 and 21 defines the length of the pintle 9, and the legs that are formed by those bends serve to confine the lugs 15 and 16 in close juxtaposition, wherein, when bent, they collectively constitute the knuckle 8. It is a feature of this construction that the knuckle and pintle are shorter than the width of the tail-piece to which the I pintle-piece is secured, and that they are in consequence covered or protected by-the tail-piece. The manner in which the correlation of the several parts contribute to the forming of a suitable hinge connection and of its union to the parts which it is intended to unite,
- may be clearly apprehended from the foregolng.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a receptacle, a lateral projection therefrom, and a lid, of a hinge connecting the lid and receptacle, said hinge comprising a strap about said projection, and a pintle uniting the ends of the strap, the straps being provided with lugs bent about the pintle to form a knuckle.
2. The combination with a receptacle, its lid, and a lateral projection on the receptacle, of a hinge comprising a strap provided with lugs bent about said projection so as to bring said lugs into juxtaposition, and a pintle assembled with and uniting said lugs bent to form a knuckle.
3. Thecombination with a receptacle, its lid, and a lateral projection on the receptacle, of a hinge comprising a strap provided with lugs bent about said projection so as to bring said lugs into juxtaposition, and a pintle-piece having a pintle about which said lugs are bent to form collectively a knuckle, and bends confining said lugs in their said juxtaposition.
4:. The combination with a receptacle, its lid, and a lateral projection on the receptacle, of a hinge comprising a strap provided with lugs bent about said projection so as to bring said lugs into juxtaposition, and a pintle-piece having a pintle about which said lugs are bent to form collectively a knuckle, and bends. confining said lugs in their said juxtaposition, said bends forming legs in the pintle-piece for fastening the hinge to the lid.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES S. BARON. Witnesses NORMAN W. PETERS, MILTON SAYLER.
