Description

June 12, 1951 L. GOLDMAN ADJUSTABLE SPORT CAP Filed Jan. 25, 1949 Patented June 12, 1951 ADJUSTABLE sroa'r CAP Louis Goldman, Newton, Mass., assignor to Bancroft Cap Company, Boston, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Application January 25, 1949, Serial No, 72,619
1 Claim.
This invention relates to caps for personal wear, and pertains more particularly to improvements in adjustable caps for sportswear. The principal purpose of the invention is to provide a simple, economical, smart and serviceable cap which may be easily adjusted by the user to fit various head sizes.
A recommended embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved cap; and
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, showing one of the side flaps detached from the adjustable fastening.
The cap is preferably made of weatherized fabric and preferably comprises a top piece II, side pieces I2 and I3, a back piece I4 and a visor I5. The side and. back pieces are suitably stitched to the top piece, and the visor is attached to the forward edge of the top piece and to the bottom edge of the side pieces in any conventional manner.
The rear side edge of each of the side pieces overlaps the adjacent side edge of the back piece I4, as indicated at I6 and I1, and the lower back corners of the back pieces are adapted to be fastened along the lower portion of the back piece, in a variety of adjusted positions.
For this purpose, the lower portion of the back piece I4 is provided with a tape I8, or other flexible strip, on its outer side, the tape being stitched or otherwise fastened at its ends and preferably at its center as indicated at I9 to the back piece, said tape lying parallel and adjacent the lower edge of said back piece, and constituting a slide carrier. A pair of sliders 20 and 2I, each equipped with the socket element 22 of a snap or separable fastener, are carried by the tape I8 and are manually movable along the tape toward and from its respective ends. The tape passes through slots at each end of the slider which is held in adjusted position thereon by frictional engagement with the tape, preferably supplemented by the provision of teeth 23 on a part of the slider, to engage and grip the tape in such adjusted position.
The lower rear corners of the side pieces I2 and I3 are respectively equipped with the stud elements 24 and 25 of a separable fastener, said stud elements snapping into the sockets 22 of the slides 20 and 2| respectively, thereby removably to secure said side pieces to the back piece I 4 of the cap.
By suitably adjusting the position of the slides on the tape I8, the effective head size of the cap may be regulated to fit snugly and comfortably on the wearers head. It will be apparent that the slides may be adjusted to fractions of the conventional cap sizes, and that the adjustment may be changed to suit particular conditions of wear, if desired. The slides are concealed by the overlapping edges of the side pieces I2 and I3, so that the cap when worn simulates a conventional sports cap made in graded sizes. The overlapping edges of the side pieces also obviate any gaps or openings in the cap material and prevent rain, snow or wind from blowing in between the separable side pieces and the back of the cap.
It will be understood that the improved universally adjustable cap, may be made of any suitable material, such as textile fabric (weatherized or not), woven goods, leather or the like, in various styles or patterns. It will also be understood that the slide carrier I8, herein and in the appended claim called a tape for convenience, may be a strip of any suitably flexible material, either the same as or different from the cap material.
I claim:
An adjustable sports cap having a visor, said cap comprising a top piece, a back piece depending therefrom, and two side pieces also depending from the top piece, said side pieces having rear side edges overlapping the corresponding side edge of the back piece, a tape secured midway and at its ends to the lower portion of the back piece, said tape lying parallel and adjacent the lower edge of said back piece, sliders frictionally movable along the tape with separable fastener elements on said sliders which coact with complemental fastener elements on the lower rear corners of the respective side pieces for securing said side pieces in adjusted position with respect to the :back piece, said lower rear corners being completely separated from said back piece when the complemental fastener elements are disconnected.
LOUIS GOLDMAN.
