Vn/La/n/ UNITED STATES RIVEBIUS MARSH, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.
PATENT GEEICE.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,440, dated March 28, 1882,
Application tiled February 14, 1881.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BIVERIUS MARSH, of New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Columns and Pedestals for Lamps and other Purposes and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andlexact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this speciication. My invention relates to improvements in lamp-columns and pedestals for lamps and other purposes; and it consists in a lamp column or pedestal constructed in sectionslengthwise, each section having a segment of a screw or a bayonet-catch at the ends; and it further consists in constructing the base with a screw or bayonet-catch in the top to receive the bottom ofthe sectional column; and also in the combination ot' the base, the column, and the lamp-rest, as hereinafter described.
The drawing represents a side elevation of the separated parts of a column castor molded in two or more sections lengthwise, each section having a segment of a screw or a bayonet-catch at the ends, and also showing thet base and lamp-rest with corresponding fastcnings.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The figure is a pedestal consisting ot' a column, C, a base, D, and a lamp rest or support, A. lhe column C is made ot` metal or other'suitable material, and is molded or cast in'molds or in sand and in sections lengthwise, each section having -a molded or cast segment of a screw or a bayonet-catch at thc ends, as shown at B Gand K K. The base D is made of metal or other suitable material, and is moldedor cast in molds or in sand, the screw or bayonet-catch I being formed in the base at the same operation. The lamp rest or support A is made of spun metal, and with a. female screw formed at the bpttom, as shown. The position ofthe male and female screws may be reversed in some cases and answer the same purpose.
(No model.)
v The operation of my invention is simply to screw the parts together as they come out of the molds or sand.
'Ihe advantages ot' my improvements are:
First. Dispensing with the usual methods hitherto employedin connecting lamp columns and pedestals .by means of bolts and nuts. By the use of my connections and combinations I secure more uniformity and greater strength of connection, overcoming the liability of crooked pedesta'ls and lamps. It also facilitates shipping lamps and pedestals in parts as unskilled labor can mount them.
Second. By casting or molding the screws at both ends of the sectional column, and also in thc base, thus making a complete pedestal as it comes out of the mold or sand, without drilling or cutting screws.
Third. By casting the ornamental column in sections lengthwise, and with a segment of a screw or a bayonet-catch at the ends. By thus casting in sections ne iron gures can be obtained for pedestals and other purposes.
Other metals and substances can be moldedV or cast in a similar manner.
Fourth. In the facility for removing and replacing broken parts of pedestals and lamps, and also in the saving ot' labor and expense in mounting them.
I do not broadly claim a screw-socket, nor do l claim the use of a screw in the top ot' a glass stand.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Pat ent is-v A lamp column or pedestal cast in sections lengthwise, each section having a segment of a screw cast at the ends, in combination with' the base D and lamp-rest A, substantially as shown and described.
