UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY GREENFIELD, OF HARRISON, NEW JERSEY.
SASH FASTENER AN D HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 255,282, dated March 21, 1882.
Application filed December 10, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY GREENFIELD, of Harrison, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sash Locks and Holders, of which the following is a fnll,'clear, and exact description.
This invention seeks to provide an automatic window-sash lock and holder or support having such construction and operation that it will not be necessary tolrold hack the latch with one hand while raising and lowering the sash.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a window-frame having my improved lock and holder applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line 00 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a housing for the latch, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same.
Arepresentsthelocking-catch. B represents the holding-catch; and (J represents the holders, of which there may be one, two, or more secured to the frame D of the window, as shown in the drawings, for holding the window at different heights. p The locking-catch A is formed with the camprojection a, and is loosely pivoted to the plate b, which plate is formed with the lug e, which is recessed for holding the catch A, as shown in Fig. 2, and this plate is adapted to be securedv to the frame D, as shown, by screws, nails, or similar means.
The holder 0 is formed with the detent c and with the overhanging cam or deflector d, and
A and catch under it, and thus lock the window, and when the sash is raised will enter or drop into the detent c of the holder 0, and thus hold or support the window.
To unlock the window for raising, it is only necessary to swing the locking-catch A outward, which will permit the holdingcatch B to drop behind it, which will hold the catch A so that its projection to will not engage with the nose of the holding-catch, but will leave the sash entirely free to be raised, to be held by the supports or holders 0, as will be readily understood.
In lowering the window the cam or deflector d of the holder G serves to throw or swing the catch B back on its pivot, so that it will pass the detent 0, unless the window be lowered slowly, when it will drop into the detent, and thus support the window. When the hiusing F (shown in Figs. 3 and 4) is used the catch B will be pivoted to the inside of the housing, and plate 9 will not be used.
In some cases the lower outer corner of the housing F will be formed with the finger-lift f, and the plate 9 may have the lug or projection j, which serves both as a finger-lift and as a stop to prevent the catch 0 being thrown too far back by the cam or deflector d.
I do not confine myself to the use of my invention upon window-sash, as it may be used upon vertically-sliding windowfblinds and in other places.
Having thus desci ibed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The loosely-pivoted holding-catch B, in combination with the pivoted locking-catch A, formed with the cam-projection a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The plate 0, formed with the recessed lug e, in combination with the pivoted lockingcatch A and the loosely-pivoted holding-catch B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
HARRY GREENFIELD.
