(Cl. 20-4) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in building structures and the pri- Y mary object `of the present invention `is to provide a log cabin structure including means for retaining theV uprights forming the wall thereof i in a tight manner, toprevent water from passnails and other fastening means for retaining t said uprights in a fixed position.

The terminal portions of these retaining strips project upwardly from the upper ends of the logs 1 and are tted into a longitudinal groove 20 pro-- i vided in the underside of an upper plate 22 bear- A further object of the invention is to provide f a buildingstructure embodying novel and ivm-` proved means for insulating the walls thereof.
A still further object of the present invention. is to provide a collapsible building structure that is simpleand practical in construction, strong-` and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for ther purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, referf ence being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view o-f a wall constructed in accordance with the present invention, and said wall also being provided with a door and window;
Figure .2 is a fragmentary group perspective view showing the manner in which the wall-displayed in Figure 1 is constructed;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational View showing the lower portion of the building structure supported on a footing; and,
Figure '4 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the manner in which adjacent walls are joined.
Referring nowto the drawings in detail, Wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed av preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I0 represents a plurality of logs, used in conjunction with the present invention, having their outer faces I2 scalloped or rounded and with the other faces of said logs be'- ing substantially flat. These logs are disposed vertically in juxtaposed position to form a wall designated generally by the numeral I4, and best p shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The opposing vertical faces of these logs are provided with longitudinal grooves or channels I6 thatfreceive substantially flat retaining or ing on the upper ends of the logs.
Aligned longitudinal grooves 24 are provided in the upper ends of the logs and receive a horizontally disposed retaining strip 26, with a portion of this retaining strip 26 projecting upwardly from the upper ends of the logs to frictionally fit into a second longitudinal slot `28 provided in the underside of plate 22.
`To increase the thickness of the upper plate 22 and to add to the appearance of the structure, a
' second plate 30 overlies plate 22 and is secured thereto by a retaining strip 32 frictionally iltted into aligned grooves 34 provided in the opposing` faces of plates 22 and 30.
In the construction of a building with the above material, a concrete footing 36 is preferably first laid in a trench outlining the building.
A base plate 38 ispreferably anchored to the upper face of the footing in any suitable manner with a second base plate 40 disposed above and suitably secured to the upper face of plate 38. This second base plate 40 is provided with a pair of spaced parallel longitudinal grooves 42 one of which opposes a longitudinal groove 43 provided in the lower ends of the logs and retaining strips 44 are frictionally inserted in these opposing grooves to hold the logs secured to each other at of the end logs forming the sides of the doorway. p
The side pieces 5I) for the door are provided with a groove 52 in their inner faces that receive the outer portion of retaining strip I8 carried by the logs at the side of the door opening.
A longitudinal retaining strip 54 projects downwardly from the lower ends of the logs outlining the upper opening of the door, and this retaining strip 54 engages the upper piece (not shown) for the door'frame.
An opening 56 is cut in the side wall I4 to provide a window opening' and a portion of retaining strip 58 projects outwardly from the opposing ends of the legs outlining the top and bottom of the window opening to fit into a longitudinal groove 60 in the inner faces of both the upper portion 82 and bottom portion 64 of the window frame, with the ends of the retaining strips I8 also projecting outwardly from opposing ends of the logs to t into a second longitudinal slot 66 in the inner faces of both portions 62 and B4.
The side portion 68 for the window frame is provided with a groove'(not shown) for receiving the outwardly `projecting portion of strips I8 of the logs at the sides of the window opening.
Reference is now directed to Figure 4, whereinA v secured to the inner faces of the logs to prevent seepage of water through the abutting faces of Y the logs. I
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing'sit is believed that a clear understanding of the construction; operation and ladvantages of Vthe device will be quite apparent to'those skilled in this art. A more vdetail-ed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
.It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodimentof'the invention the same is asusceptible to certain changes fully comprehendedby'the spirit of the invention as herein described.
.Havingdescribed the invention what is claimed asrnewis:
:11; A wall structure comprising a plurality of logs, said logs being arranged vertically in juxtaposed position and having opposing vertical faces, vertical .grooves provided in the opposing vertical faces of said logs, fiat retaining strips tting in opposing grooves to retain Aadjacent'logs relative 4to each other, aligned longitudinal grooves in the upper ends of said logs, a horizontally disposed retaining strip fitting in said ,aligned grooves 4.and preventing endwise movement of the logs, a portion of said last strip with respect to each other projecting upwardly from saidlogs, and a header plate having longitudinal grooves in its bottom face receiving the last mentioned retaining strip, said header plate being held against the upper ends of said logs by said horizontal retaining strip, Vand said vertical strips having upper ends tted in one of said longitudinal grooves to further hold the header plate against the upperends of said logs.
2. A wall structure comprising a plurality of verticallogs each having a pair of flat vertical side'faces and a at vertical inner face, said logs being' arranged in` juxtaposition with a side face of one log abutting a side face of an adjacent log, the abutting side faces of said logs having registering grooves therein, at retaining strips joining adjacentlogs and being fitted in said registering grooves, saidlogs each having a horizontal groove in their upper ends, said horizontal grooves being aligned with each other, a horizontally `disposed retaining strip seated in said horizontal grooves and joining all of said logs togetherVv and aiding the vertical stripsin retaining a flat side Vface of one log against a flat side face of an adjacent log, said logs having upper flat end surfaces, a flat header plate resting upon the upper end surfaces of said logs and having a pair of horizontal channels therein, said vertical strips including upper ends projecting above the upper ends of said logs and fitting in one of said channels to hold the header plate against the upper ends of said logs, said horizontal strip including an upper edge projecting above the upper ends of saidlo'gs and'ttlng in theother of'said channels to aid in retaining the 'header plate against the .upper ends of said logs, and vertical batten strips secured to the inner faces of adjacent logs and extendingacross the abutting side faces of ad- Jacent logs.
A wallstruct'ure comprising a plurality of vertically disposedlogs lying in side by side relationship and including flat upper and lower horizontal ends, adjacent logs including opposed flat vertical faces engaging each other throughout their length, said opposed vertical faces having registering vertical grooves extending through the'length of Ysaid logs, vertical retaining lstrips itted in said 'registering vertical grooves and joining adjacent logs, said vertical strips including upper and lower ends projecting outwardly from the upper and lower ends of said logs, the upper and lower ends of said logs having horizontal grooves therein, said horizontal grooves in th'eupperends of the logs being in'longitudinal alignment with each other and the horizontal groovesv in vthe lo'wer ends of said logs also being. in llongitudinal alignment with each other, upper and'lower horizontally disposed re taining ystrips'itted in said upper 'and lower horizontal. grooves'fand including l vouter longitudinal edges lprojecting outwardly from fthe ends of said logs, upper and lower headers each having a pair,
of spaced Aparallel-channels, lsaid upper headerV resting against the upper ends of said logs and the channels in said -upper header receiving the longitudinal edgeof said upper retainer strip and -the upper ends of said vertical strips to hold the 'upperheader to the upper ends of the logs; the channels in the lower header receiving the lower` ends of Athe vertical strips and the outer edge of said horizontal strip to hold the lower header against the lower ends of said logs, and vertical batten strips secured to and joiningadjacent logs c 4. The combination of claim-3 wherein said logs .have rough exterior surfaces and finished interior surfaces.
