'An object of this invention is to provide a 3 Claims.
plurality of mattress sections having means for K detachably securing said sections in certain predetermined selected relative positions.
Another object of the present invention is to Y provide av resilient cushion means to be used in bodment of the present invention,` illustrated in thegaccompanying drawings wherein:
Figure `1 is a perspective View of a first form bfjthepresent invention;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention disclosed in Figure 1 and showingv added thereto cover means for the space resultf ing in certain selectedlocations of mattress sec-v tions;
Figure 3 is an extended longitudinal sectional view of the invention disclosed in Figure l;

limbs, in order to accommodate plaster" cas/ts", splints, and to provide means for receiving drainage tubes in various positions of the body. Further, ventilation of certain portions of the body may be provided'and utilized in certain predetermined positions pressure on wounds may be izo avoided.' The useY of the present invention further makes reclining or declining of beds extremely simple affording a more natural posture for the patient.
When the invention is utilized for physical culture purposes as Well as athletic use in rub' downs, the invention allows an athletes body or limbs to bein comfortable positions, relaxing muscles .and preventing stoppage of blood circulation.vr l
It is also within the purview of the present invention to provide either single or double bed mattress by Varrangement of segments, merely by the proper selectionof said arrangement.
Taking now Figure 1 there isprovided amatt'resssegment I0 of the usual conventional internal structure and appearance. A strip of material I 2 is provided at a selected edge `of said mattress segment I0. It is noted at this point that'the strip I2 is detachablysecured to the 4said selected edge of the mattress by asuit- 'c able fastening means, in this instance a slide holding the section I6 to the said strip I2.
Figure 5 is an exploded perspective view of a third embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 6 is a schematic view showing obvious formulations of arrangementV of segments of the present invention, and I Figure '7 is a perspective view of a cushion insert to be used in conjunction with any of the above mentioned embodiments.
Referring now in detail to the illustrated preferred embodiment of the present invention, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements thereof.
This invention has'been provided to produce devices which produce means for effecting free movement of the shoulders and upper arms thereby enhancing comfort and the health of the individual in using the present invention.
Space between units of mattress sections is designed for hospital use in order to facilitate comfort of patients such as free movement of fastener I4. Av second section I6 of any suitable shape or size is removably secured to the opposite edge of the said strip I2. The same type of fastener, slide fastener I4, may be utilized in It will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 1 that the said mattress sections I0 and I6 may be selectivelyV and slidably moved relative to each other restricted only by the width of the said member I2. 4
It is noted at'this point that a resilient cushion I8, preferably of sponge rubber or the like is provided for the purpose of seating in the sling or strip I2. By utility of this expedient a level or substantially level surface is provided on the upper portion of the mattress. Of course, if the resulting aperture or break is desired between the segments III and I6, the cushion I8 is simply notused.
It will be noted that a plurality of fastening means, preferably buttons 20 are provided about the edge of the said mattress segments II) and I6. Cover strips 22 and 24 respectively are provided for the purpose of being removably secured to the saidL mattress segments I0 and I6. The covers 22V and 24 have complemental securing means or snap fasteners along the longitudinal edges thereof which are complemental to the above mentioned buttons 20. The last mentioned covers 22 and 24 may be selectively utilized in accordance with the prerogative of the user of the invention. 5
Referring now to Figure 4 sections I0 and I6 are provided of any suitable configuration and the sling or connecting strip 26 is provided therebetween. In this instance, the securing means are simplebuttons 28 provided alongfrthe 10 edge of the said sections I6 and' I6 and buttonholes complemental to the said buttons provided in the said sling 26. |Ivhis differentiating fea"-v ture is the only departure from the above described first embodiment of the present in- 15 vention. e .1-
A third embodiment of the presentiinventionV is disclosed in Figure 5. The usualv illustrative ,mattress sections Iii and I6 are provided for use-L stance, a resilient clamp member r3| is provided inga longitudinal slot along selected -edgesof the 25 said Amattress sections I6 and I6. This clip may be made of any suitable material such as plastic, light metal, certain impregnated fabrics and the lilqe.. The sling `3l) has inturned marginal folds and rods 32 extending theredown.` These mar- 30 ginal folds and the rods 32 are removably received in thesaid clips 3 I. Of course, the cushion member I8 may be utilized in this embodiment as well as the previously described embodiments of the present invention.
Referring to Figure 6 there is disclosed variously` configured mattress sections 34 and 36. Justa-few of the many variations or rearrangements. ofvmattress sections are disclosed in the said Figure 6. Of course, the particular need of i0 theuser of the invention must be taken into consideration in` deciding which arrangement of mattress sections is most advantageous and desirable. f
- There has` been described and illustrated but 45 afew of the preferred embodiments of the present invention. However, it is vapparent that-varia- 4 l tions as to size, shape may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention. Accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the present invention what is claimed as novel and improved is as follows:
1. A mattress comprising mattress sections, slots in opposite ends of said sections, resilient clip inserts disposed within said seotionsand extending longitudinally Vwithin rsaid slots, means y for connecting slots in adjacent sections includ- 4*ing a strip of material having rods extending `2'. A mattress comprising mattress sections,
slotsin opposite edges of said sections, resilient clip `inserts disposed Within said sections and extending longitudinally within said slots, means for connecting slots in adjacent sections including a strip of material having rods fixed along opposite edges thereof, said rods being detachably received in said clip inserts, and a resilient cushion havingan arcuate bottom disposed on said cloth strip. i
3. A mattress'comprising a first and a second mattress section, each section having upper and lower surface members and sides, a strip of material forming a support and secured to adjacent and confronting sides of said rst and second sections-in spacedrelationship with respect to said upper and lower surface members, upper and lower cover strips, means fastening said strips to the adjacent sides of said sections, and a cushion disposed on said support between said upper andlowercover strips.
