Application February 16, 1956, Serial No. 565,912 9 Claims. (Cl. -334) This invention relates generally to sleeping covers and more particularly to a fitted sleeping cover for use with a mattress of pre-selected size.

It is not unusual for a sleeping individual to kick or push his sleeping cover out of place involuntarily. This is especially true for infants, rendering them subject to great discomfort.

It is therefore an object of this invention to provide an improved, one-piece blanket or sleeping cover which cannot be easily displaced by involuntary movements taking place during sleep.

A further object of this invention is to provide an attractive, improved sleeping cover which comfortably enfolds the sleeper and nevertheless cannot be easily displaced by involuntary movements.

Another object of this invention is to provide an attractive, improved, waterproof sleeping pocket for infants for use with the aforesaid sleeping cover;

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a comfortable, extensible sleeping pocket or grow bag for infants for use with the aforesaid sleeping cover.

The invention together with its advantages and additional objects will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein the same or similar parts are denoted by like numbers in the various figures:

Figure 1 is a front perspective view with part cut out, of a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Figure 2 is a rear perspective view of a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Figure 3 is a developed view of a blank of a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, a preferred embodiment of the fitted cover 10, according to the invention, may be made of woolen blanket cloth or of any suitable, seasonable material such as cotton, silk, nylon or Orlon. The blank 10, shown in Figure 3, of which the fitted cover is formed, has a substantially rectangular central panel 12.

Extending downward from the lower edge 14 of the central panel is and end flap 16 made up of two

adjoining panels

18 and 20. The panel 18 is substantially rectangular and extends the full length of the lower edge 14. The width of panel 18 is substantially equal to the thickness of a pre-selected mattress 22, which the cover is intended to fit. The mattress is shown for illustrative purposes only and is not part of the invention. Extending downward in Figure 3 from the lower edge 24 of panel 18 is the panel 20 which extends the full length of edge 24. Panel 20 need not have the same width as panel 18 but may be of any suitable width. The ends of panel 20 are cut so that its left and

right edges

26 and 28 respectively are each at an angle of substantially 45 with the edge 24.

The left and right side flaps 30 and 32 respectively, as

shown in Figure 3, are somewhat similar in construction V to the end flap. The left side flap 30 is made up of two adjoining, substantially rectangular panels 34 and 36. Panel 34 may extend the full length of the left edge 38 of the central panel and is substantially equal in width to the thickness of the pre-selected mattress. Panel 36 may extend the full length of the left edge 40 of panel 34, and may be of substantially the same width as panel 20. The lower end of panel 36 is preferably cut so that the edge 42 is at an angle of substantially 45 to the edge 40.

The right side flap 32 is also made up of two adjoining, substantially

rectangular panels

44 and 46. Panel 44 may extend the full length of the right edge 48 of the central panel and is substantially equal in width to the thickness of the pre-selected mattress. Panel 46 may extend the full length of the right edge 50 of panel 44, and may be of substantially the same width as panel 20. The lower end of panel 46 is preferably cut so that the edge 52 is atan angle of substantially 45 to the edge 50.

To form a retaining pocket 51 into which the foot end of a mattress may be snugly inserted the lower edge 54 of panel 34 may be sewn, or otherwise fastened, to the left edge 56 of panel 18, edge 42 of panel 36 may be fastened to the edge 26 of panel 20, the lower edge 58 of panel 44 may be fastened to the right edge 60 of panel 18, and edge 52 of panel 46 may be fastened to edge 28 of panel 24). To facilitate fastening the aforementioned edges together, by stitching or otherwise, a narrow extension flap 43 may be left extending along the

42, 52, 56 and 26. Another narrow extension flap 53 may be left extending along the

edges

52, 58, 60 and 28.

One of the advantages of this invention lies in the fact that the improved fitted sleeping cover, according to the invention, may be made of one piece of material. Furthermore, the sleeping cover can be made to fit a mattress of any pre-selected size such as the mattress for a baby carriage, infants crib, regular crib, junior bed, hospital bed, standard twin bed, standard double bed or any other outsize bed.

In the preferred embodiment of this invention further advantages obtain.

The upper edge of the fitted sleeping cover is trimmed with and edging 62 of satin or other attractive, smooth material for comfort in contacting the skin.

The left and right side flaps 3t) and 32 are tucked under the mattress to sheathe the sides of the mattress and prevent lateral displacement of the sleeping cover. A retaining strip 64, preferably of some elastic material, is attached by stitching 65 or otherwise to the underside of the sleeping cover parallel and near to its upper edge for the purpose of girdling the mattress and holding the cover in place. To provide expansible space under the sleeping cover, the sleeping cover is shirred to the retaining strip. Although the retaining strip may be a continuous girdle, circling the mattress, in the preferred embodiment the strip is in the form of a belt which extends completely across the cover. Part of the strip extends beyond the cover a distance sufficient to girdle the mattress and to be adjustably fastened to the cover. Buttons 66, or other fasteners such as eyes for hooks, or snap fasteners are attached in series to the cover near one of its upper sideedges, and their counterparts such as buttonholes, loops, or hooks are set in series near the end of the protruding part of the retaining strip to make the said retaining strip adjustable.

A second adjustable retaining strip 63 has one end attached to the side panel 44 near and substantially perpendicular to the upper edge thereof. This second strip is long enough to be passed horizontally around the head end of the mattress and be adjustably fastenable to the side panel 34, near its upper edge,-by the sequential fasteners '70 to prevent the cover from slipping down toward the foot end of the mattress.

Either or both retaining strips may be covered, pref erably shirringly, with a smooth, attractive material such as satin or nylon for comfort and/or for ornamentation.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention a longitudinal canopy 72 is provided to furnish additional expansible space under the cover. The canopy is fixed in the middle of and throughout the length of the cover, and is preferably fastened by stitching 74, in two kick pleats at the foot of the cover. The folds 76 are extensions of the kick pleats, and together with the shirring at the upper edge of the blanket form the expansible canopy. At the upper end of the canopy, the side folds 7 6 are stitched in place shirringly preferably to the transverse retaining strip 64.

One or more longitudinal box pleats may be used to provide expansible space under the sleeping cover in place of the canopy formed by the kick pleats and the folds.

A detachable infant retaining pocket 78, the lower end of which may be flared, according to one embodiment of the invention may be affixed to the cover by buttons 80, or by some other means such as a zipper or snap fasteners. The retaining pocket may be lined with some waterproof material and edge-trimmed for comfort with an edging 82 of satin or some other smooth, attractive material. To make the infant retaining pocket an extensible grow bag transverse lines of removable stitching 84 may be sewn at intervals completely across the said pocket and near its foot end. As the infant grows the stitching may be let out so that the grow bag grows with the infant.

Due to its construction, therefore, an improved fitted sleeping cover is provided which comfortably enfolds a sleeping person, infant or adult, and yet cannot be easily displaced in the course of the ordinary movements takingplace during sleep. V

It is to be understood that the invention may be applied to a fitted sheet, fitted blanket, or to any other type of sleeping cover.

It will thus be seen that there is provided an article of manufacture in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or show in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed is:

1. A fitted blanket for use with a mattress of preselected size, said mattress having two sides, a head end, and a foot end, and said blanket having: an upper edge and a foot end; an elastic girdling strip for circling the mattress transversely and holding the blanket in place, shirringly attached transversely of the blanket proximately parallel to the said upper edge; an elastic strip attached to the blanket at an angle of substantially 90 to its upper edge for horizontally circling the head end of the mattress and preventing the blanket from slipping downward to the foot end ofthe mattress; at least one longitudinal box pleat fixed in place medially of the blanket for furnishing expansible space between the blanket and the mattressya fitted retaining pocket at the foot end of the blanket for snugly holding the foot end of the mattress; and two fitted side pockets for snugly sheathing the sides of the mattress.

2. A fitted blanket for use with a mattress of preselected size, said mattress having two sides, a head end, and a foot end, and said blanket having: an upper edge and a foot end; an elastic girdling strip for circling the mattress transversely and holding the blanket in place, shirringly attached transversely. of the blanket proximately parallel to the said upper edge; a longitudinal canopy fixed in place medially of the blanket and having two kick pleats sewn at the foot end of the blanket and two folds extending from the kick pleats longitudinally along the blanket for providing expansible space between the blanket and the mattress; a fitted retaining pocket at the foot end of the blanket for snugly holding the foot end of the mattress; and two fitted side pockets for snugly sheathing the sides of the mattress.

3. A fitted blanket for use with a mattress of preselected size, said mattress having two sides, a head end, and a foot end, and said blanket having: an upper edge and a foot end; an elastic girdling strip for circling the mattress transversely and holding the blanket in place, shirringly attached transversely of the blanket proximately parallel to the said upper edge; a longitudinal canopy fixed in place medially of the blanket and having two longitudinal kick pleats sewn at the foot end of the blanket and two folds extending from the kick pleats longitudinally along the blanket for providing expansible space between the blanket and the mattress; a fitted retaining pocket at the foot end of the blanket for snugly holding the foot end of the mattress; and two fitted side pockets for snugly sheathing the sides of the mattress.

4. A one-piece, removable, fitted sleeping cover for use-with a mattress of preselected size, said mattress having two sides, a head end and a foot end, and said cover having: an upper edge, two sides and a foot end; an adjustable strip for girdling the mattress and holding the cover in place, shirringly attached transversely of the cover along its upper edge and extending beyond the cover a distance sutficient to encircle the mattress; fastening means attachable to the cover and to the said adjustable strip for adjustably fastening the said strip to the cover; a longitudinal canopy fixed in place medially of the cover and having two kick pleats sewn at the foot end of the cover and two folds extending partway from the kick pleats longitudinally along the cover to merge with the shirring at the said adjustable strip for providing expansible space between the cover and the mattress; and a fitted retaining pocket at the foot end and along the sides of the cover for sheathing the foot end and the two sides of the mattress.

5. A removable,-fitted sleeping cover as described in claim 4 and having a separate, extensible sleeping pocket with at least one line of removable stitching sewn transversely completely across and through the said extensible sleeping pocket.

6. A removable, fitted sleeping cover as described in claim 4, and having a separate, removable sleeping pocket for holding an infant.

7. A removable, fitted sleeping cover as described in claim 6, and wherein the sleeping pocket is lined with a waterproof material.

8. A removable, fitted sleeping cover as described in claim 6, and having means for fastening the sleeping pocket under the cover and near the upper edge of said cover.

9. A removable, fitted sleeping cover for use with a mattress of preselected size, said mattress having two sides, a head end and a foot end, and said cover having:

the cover proximately parallel to its upper edge and extending beyond the cover a distance sufiicient to encircle the mattress; fastening means attached to the cover and to the first adjustable elastic strip for adjustably fastening the said strip to the cover; a second adjustable strip of elastic material adjustably attached to the cover at an angle of substantially 90 to its upper edge for circling the head end of the mattress and preventing the cover from slipping downward toward the foot end of the mattress; fastening means attached to the cover and to the second elastic strip for adjustably fastening the said second strip to the cover; a longitudinal canopy fixed in place medially of the cover and having two kick pleats sewn at the foot end of the cover and two folds extending from the kick pleats longitudinally along the cover for providing expansible space between the cover and the mattress; and a fitted retaining pocket at the foot end and along the sides of the cover for sheathing the foot end and the two sides of the mattress.
