Description

April 14, 1953 s. ANDERSON MATTRESS Filed Feb. 24. 1950 IIII'IIII It. 2!. l! a: .1 i J4? ii INVENTOR. ANNA s. ANDEQsOM Patented Apr. 14, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MATTRESS Anna S. Anderson, Alexis, Ill. .Applicationleliruary 24, 1950, Serial No. 145,074
1 Thistinvention relates to mattresses, and particularly to mattresses used in the sick "room or hospital.
An object of the invention is to provide a mattress; composed of a pair of identically constructed se'ctions'having inner seamless ends.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two-part mattress, in which the bottom of each part is formed with straps adapted to be secured to'the springs of a bed so that the two parts of the mattress can be arranged in any desired position with respect to each other on the bed springs.
A further object of the invention is to provide detachable means for fixedly retaining a mattress on the springs of a bed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts of which it is composed, "as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed and its spring showing a two-part mattress of the present invention mounted on the bed spring, the outer end of one of the parts of the mattress being turned up to more clearly show the bottom construction;
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an inverted plan view of one. of the parts of the mattress;
Figure 4 is an enlarged section of a portion of the structure shown in Figure 2 illustrating the manner in which the mattress-holding clip is applied to the mattress and to the bed spring; and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the clip.
Referring to the drawing, the mattress includes a pair of sections II and I2. Since the sections of the mattress are of identical construction, a description of one will suffice for the other.
Each mattress section comprises a cover formed of two layers of sheet material. The outside of the cover should preferably be formed of suitable water-proof material I3 and the inner layer of the cover should preferably be formed of suitable woven fabric, such as mattress ticking or the like I4.
The top, one end and the bottom of the two layers of material comprising the cover of each mattress section are formed from single rectangular pieces of material, the fabric layer I4 being placed upon the waterproof material I3 and 1 Claim. (01; 5-1) the two sheets of material folded transversely midway the length thereof to provide a top section I5, inner end wall I6 and bottom section II, having an outer-exposed surface of waterproof material I3 and an inner surface of the fabric I4. The top section 15 is spaced a suitable distance from the bottom section I! by side walls I8 and an outer end wall I9. If so desired, the walls I8 and iQJmay'beformed from a single elongated strip of flexible fabric of the same material as the inner layer I4. The side and end wall material has a width corresponding substantially to the distance it is desired to space the top I5 from the bottom H to provide an'envelope or casing for the filling'material of the mattress. The meeting edges of the materials used in forming the mattress cover are seamed and connected vby rows of stitches 20, which extend around the 'edgesof the mattress in the manner shown in Figures 1 and 3. [The manner in which the "covers are constructed is such that there are not any transverse seams at the inner or confronting ends I6 "of the "sections II and I2, these ends of the sections bein rounded or semicylindr'ical in contour, so as to be capable 'of remaining in cont-act with each other in any angulated relation of the sections to each other.
Disposed within each mattress section and entirely enclosed by the cover thereof is a iillins including a base in the form of a sheet of felt 2! and a padding 22 of resilient material superposed on the felt base and occupying therewith the entire interior of the cover. The padding 22'is preferably in the form of a. rectangular block of foam rubber having one end thereof semicircular in shape so that when the filling is mounted within the cover, the inner end wall It of each mattress section will be semicircular in form, as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Arranged transversely of the bottom of each mattress section II and I2, and disposed at a suitable distance inwardly from the outer end wall I9 thereof is a strip of flexible fabric material 25 constituting a reinforcing band. The material of the reinforcing band 25 is stitched to the bottom section of each cover by a series of stitches 26 arranged lengthwise of the band. At a suitable distance inwardly from each end of the reinforcing band 25, the stitches 26 are omitted so that gaps are formed therein to provide laterally spaced loops 28 in the band, as shown best in Figure 1. I
The loops 28 may provide. hand grip means by which the mattress sections can readily be picked ber preferably formed of a strip of flat spring steel bent at two points in its length to provide an upper leg 33, Figure 5, connected at end 34 to an intermediate leg 35, the latter being connected at its opposite end 36 to a lower leg 3'1. The ex tremity of leg 33 may be downturned, as indi cated at 38, Figure 5, and the extremity of leg 3'! may be upturned, as indicated at 39.1 The-construction and arrangement ofthe partsof each clip 3| is such that the upper'leg 33 is inserted in a loop 28 and arranged with said loop in the manner shown in Figure 4, in which the end 34 of the clip engages anedge of the band 25. With the mattress mounted on the bed spring 32, a wire 40 of said bed spring is inserted in the space between the intermediate leg 35 and the lower leg 31 and the clip is then arranged on the bed spring with the end 36 engaged by the wire 40.
In this way, the double hook provided by each clip 3| will be fixedly secured to the mattress 4 in the central portion of a bed. This open space or gap provides comfort for the patient and is useful to the attendant during certain kinds of care and treatment of certain types of patients. The open space between the sections of the mattress also is desirable in the care of patients having bed sores that have developed on the patients back or hips, and by the proper use of this open space and the mattress sections the development of bed'sores canfbe preventedin almost all types of bedfast patients.
Still another important use of the mattress of the present invention is in the care and treatand will in turn fixedly secure the mattress in V desired position on the bed spring.
The ,mattress of the present invention and composed of two identically constructed sections, is primarily designed to be used on hospital beds, The purpose of providing a sectional mattress of i the type hereinbefore described is to enable each the sheets in bed making. a
The uses of the two sectional mattresses of the present invention are important when required during care, and treatment of certain types of patients, either half of the mattress being removable from the bed by disconnecting its clips 31 from the bed spring wire to which they are secured. Then the detached section can be disposed ina predetermined-position and secured in such predetermined position by engaging its clips 3! with the bed spring in the manner heretofore described. Another use of the two-part mattress is obtained when the halves are spaced apart to provide an openspace therebetween and ment of patients who have been placed in casts that encase the lower part of the body from the These of the casts for certain purposes can be preventedby arranging the sections of the mattress in the desired spaced apart position on the bed spring.
The reason for forming the inner ends l6 of the sections H and I2 with rounded or semicir cular seamless surfaces is that a patient will not have to lie on seams of the mattress when the sections thereof are arranged on the bed springs in the manner hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a bed spring, a mattress comprising a pair of mattress sections removably resting upon the bed spring in end-to-end relation, said mattress sections having semi-cylindrical confronting ends, the curvatures of the confronting ends enabling the confronting ends to remain in contact with each other without distortion in different angulated positions of the mattress sections relative to each other, and clip means acting between the mattress sections and the bed spring and securing the mattress sections individually in place.
