PORTABLE SWING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,991, dated March 14, 1882. Application filed February 7, 1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Portable Swing, of which the following is a specification.

The subject of my invention is a portable swing having standards rising from a base and suitably braced, adapting the whole structure to be moved from place to place, from the upper part of which standards are pivoted swinging arms formed with bends or offsets to carry them to asufficient distance from the standards to preventdanger to the fingers of the occupant of the swing when grasping the swinging arms. To the lower ends of these arms are attached a seat or seats, of any suitable form and construction, adapted for one or more occupants, and having one or more foot-rests. The seat and foot-rest are, if preferred, made adjustable in height.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with refence to theaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the swing adapted for a single occupant. Fig. 2 is a side view, showing the swing adapted for two occupants sitting back to back.

A A are parts of the base of the swing, to which are firmly secured standards B B, supported by braces G 0, so that the entire structure A B G constitutes a connected rigid frame. A seat, D, of any preferred form, is hung by arms E E, pivoted at F F, to the tops of the standards B B. The arms E are formed with otfsets or shoulders at e c, to cause them to hang at a considerable distance-from the standards B, in order to prevent any danger, of contact with the said standards of the hands of the occupant of the swing when grasping the swinging arms E. ThestandardsB B areinclined outward from the base, as shown, and are adapted to form a safe and strong support to the swing without any cross-bar or stay betweentheir upper parts.

Theseat may be of any preferred form. For the purpose ofillustration I have shown in Fig. l a single seat, I), provided with a back, G, and arms H H, which, to render the swing attractive to children, may be made to approximate in shape to the neck and head of a horse. At I is shown a tray, hinged at one end, i,

,to one of the arms H, and fastened at the other end by a hook, J, or other attachment. This tray is adapted for holding toys or other articles, and serves also as a guard to prevent a young child falling out of the swing.

A foot-rest is shown at K, which may be made adjustable in height by set-screws orpins placed in the holes LL. I also make the whole seat adjustable in height, if preferred, by the use of plurality of holes, by which itis secured in the required position to the arms E E, or preferably by making the said arms with slotconnections, as shown at M M; but I do not limit myself to any specific mode of adjustment.

Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A portable swing having a base, and permanently attached thereto outwardly-inchned standards, from which the swing is suspended, substantially as described.

2. A swing-frame consisting of a suitable. base and standards ada-pted'to sustain the weight of the swing without the use of a connecting-bar or stay above the point at which the swing is attached to the standards, substantially as described. v

3. A portable swing having a base and provided with standards inclined outward from a perpendicular line with the base, in combination with a swing attached to the upper ends of said standards, as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A portable swing havinga base and provided with standards, in combination wit-l1 the arms .orsupports to which the seatof the swing is attached, said arms being' adapted to sustain a weight in a line inside of the'point at which they are attached to the standards, thereby dispensing with the use of a cross-bar or stay above the swing.
