STORE AWNING Filed June 30, 1947 INVENTOR RRQL E DAzzo ATTORN EY atenteci Apr. 3, 1951l STORE- AWNING Errol New Yi'u'rl; IY
Application June 30, 1947, Serial No. 758,121
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a front bar construction for awnings which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in operation.
According to the invention, the front bar is made of tubular construction and more particularly of extruded aluminum tubing on which there is provided a formation including a slot into which a loop of the awning material can be extended and be retained by the insertion of a rod through the loop and through the slot, the loop leaving the slot through a restricted passage which is so constructed that it prevents the sidewi'se displacement of the rod with the loop therethrough.
In order to fix the awning material to the front bar, the loop is extended through the restricted opening of the slot and then the rod is extended in Vendwise fashion into the slot and into the loop. The front bar will be supported upon the end of an awning bracket by the extension of a tube portion, carried by the bracket, into the tubing portion of the bar.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing formingamaterial part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a, fragmentary perspective view of a front awning bar attached to an awning according to the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse cross sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevational View looking into the restricted opening of the slot.
Fig. 4 is an end view of any awning showing the bracket which is attached to the front bar and which has a tube adapted to t into the end of the front bar.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the awning looking into the open end of the loop or hem.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of the rod which is used for fastening the loop of the awning within 1 claim. (ci. 16o-45) 2 the slot formation formed on the exterior of the front bar.
Referring now to the figures, II) represents a front bar formed of light weight metal, such as aluminum, adapted to extend across the front of the awning. The front bar is preferably formed by an extruding process and a lip II is made integral therewith. The lip II extends the full length of the bar, being on the exterior surface of the same, and is open to provide a restriction I2. Through this restriction there is extended a loop portion I3 of an awning I4. The awning I4 is formed of canvas material and the loop I3 is extended through the restriction I2 and into the space provided by the lip. In order to maintain the loop within the space, there is extended a rodIE through the loop and through the lip space whereupon the loop will be adequately and evenly retained on the front bar. In order to facilitate the insertion of the loop and the rod into the end' of the lip I I, the lip is flared at the opposite ends of the bar as indicated at I6. This provides an enlarged opening space which facilitates the starting of the loop and rod into the space. The loop can be easily threaded through the space with the rod. In front of the lip is a hump or projection I1. The rod I5 is galvanized so as not to rust. f4
The bar is connected to the awning brackets by the position of a member 2| thereon fastened to `an arm 22 by a bolt 23. Arm 22 has a laterally extending sleeve portion 24 which will extend into the end of the front bar. The sleeve portion 24 can be of any length and by having the length suflicient, there is provided adequate and permanent connection of the awning bracket with the front bar. Y
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be, understood vthat I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to al1 changes andmodiications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim. o
Having thus described my invention, vwhat I claim `as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A front bar construction for an awning comprising a tube with a, longitudinally extending integral lip portion on its exterior surface, a hump portion integral with and extending longitudinally of said front bar and formed inwardly of said lip portion, said lip portion and hump portion forming a substantially upright U-shaped channel having a restricted opening on said tube,
- 3 an awning having a loop formed at one of the edges thereof, a retaining rod insertable within said loop, and said loop together wtih said rod being insertable within said `U-shaped channel and conned therein by said restricted opening, g
the end corners of said lip portion being flared outwardly to provide an enlarged opening at the end of said U-shaped channel to facilitate the insertion of the awning loop and the retaining rod thereinto, and supporting means for said front bar construction, comprising an arm having a laterally extending sleeve inserted' into the end of said tube of said front bar construction.
