J. N. YOUNG.
} BED MATTRESS. No. 254,759.
Patented Mar. 7, 1882.
WLZNESSES C D UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JOHN NELLES YOUNG, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
BED-MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,759, dated March '7, 1882. Application filed November 3, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN NELLEs YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds and Bed-Mattresses, of which the following is a specification. a
The object of my invention is to elevate the head and upper portions of the body when lying in bed or upon a mattress. This I accomplish by a wed ge-shaped bed or mattress, the thick end being at the head and the thin end at the foot, thereby affording a gradual incline from the head to the foot, and by depressions or indentations in the incline surface of suitable dimensions to receive the shoulder, arm, and hand. My further object is to permit the shoulder, arm, and hand to lie at ease directly under the body when turned on the side, or the elbow to be bent and the forearm and hand extended forward without in either case the weight of the body resting upon the shoulder, arm, and hand, or any thereof; I attain these objects in the mannerillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fignre 1 represents a perspective View of a mattress or bed with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line at m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on-line y y of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detachable piece, C, to be placed in the opening or depression B, as shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 1, A represents a mattress or bed made of proper length and width for its intended use. p
D represents the head end, and E the foot. It is made wedge-shaped, as represented in Fig. 1.
B B are the openings or depressions in the upper incline surface of the mattress or bed into which the shoulder, arm, and hand may lie when the body is turned on its side.
I) is the place for the shoulder, c for thehand, and the space between I) and c for the arm when straight, while (1 is the place for the hand and the curved space from b to cl for the arm when the elbow is bent.
For a single mattress or bed there may be but one set of depressions B. For a double mattress or bed there may be two depressions B.
A separate and detachable piece, as shown at Fig. 4, is made to fit and completely fill the depressions b, b to c in the detachable piece being made to fit and till the space from I) to o, and b to d d in the detachable piece to fit the spaces from b to d d in B. When it is desired to use the depression B the detachable piece C may be removed. The depressions or openings B being hollowed out, as shown at B B, Fig. 3, permit the hand and arm to lie at ease under the body, which is supported by the surface of the bed or mattress A.
1 claim as new and original, the following:
1. The'wedge-shaped mattress or bed .A, having the head end D thick and gradually tapering to the foot end E, which is thin, thus making an upper incline surfacefrom D to E, thereby securing a proper elevation of the head and upper portions of a person lying thereon, and maintaining that elevation by uniform support, as specified.
2. The openings or depressions B in a mattress or bed, as shown from b to c and b to d d, as herein set forth, for'the purpose specified.
3. The separate and detachable piece C, to fit in the depressions of B, as herein set forth, and all for the purposes specified, in combination with the mattress or bed, as described.
V Joan NELLES YOUNG.
