'Application January 26, 1944,SeriarNo."519,752
(CLfl'SIr-IS) r3Claims. -l My invention pertains to a cigarette holder. Anbject of my inventioni's-to provide'a cigaretteiholider ywhichwwill rmlyretain a cigarette therein.
-A furtherfobjectof my invention is to provide such va holder wherein-'by simple manual operation the cigarette-butt canbe made to-drofp out of the holder.
A further-object ofmy invention is to v'provide a reamed conical-portion atthefrend of the holder whereby a cigarette will be snugly held thereagainst, and will allowthecigarette to fall out ofthesame, so that 'it`wil1`not A'be necessary to removie the "cigarette by means of eXtra tools or the like.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple arrangement which is neat in appeai-, ance, simple in operation, and requires very few parts.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the preferred type of holder taken along the longitudinal axis thereof,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a plan View of Figure 2 showing the device after the cigarette butt is removed,
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional detail View taken along the lines 4-4 of Figure l, and
Figure 5 is a side elevation of a portion of Figure l with the housing 2U being removed, but with the spring 25 shown in position.
My invention contemplates a provision of a cigarette holder in which the cigarette need only be inserted a very short distance, and yet will be rmly supported, with cooperant means for causing the cigarette stub to fall out after it is smoked without requiring the use of any extra tools or devices to remove the same.
I have used the character III to designate the body or member of the holder, the character II the mouth portion and the character I2 the central opening therein. At the end of the holder I provide a sulbstantially conical depression I3 which communicates with the opening I2, and the cigarette I4 is inserted into the opening I3 so that its end periphery is snugly engaged therein. A button I5 is pivotally attached at I6 to a pair of arms I1 which are pivotally attached at I8 to the member I0. The arms I1 extend downwardly -through-suitable l slots lli) fifn a metal housing :'23 and facrbss' the 4`body -Ill,-"a`nd 'aref-pivotallyattachedf at 2 I lto lfthe small roller? 22 The member I0 includesa cut awayportionat 2'3for receiving the roller 'Q2-,fand attached -fat =24 -to-a portionof the mtal-housingfis a-.leaff-'spriiig 25-havingfthe curved lend V26. lAlso-pivotally lattached at 2| are a pairof-farm'sZl lwhich'extend downwardly ft'o 'the aforesaid `pivoting point 12 I, and extend `through the out `Aoutportier-1sI or slots 285 infthe.` housing- 2 k`wli'ere'fthey then terminate in the arcuategripping jaws'29.v The portions 2l Inorn'iallyfa're lfadapt'edf-to spring outwardly shown in Figure '13 when fthe-y are i released from Ithefside's of theslotsi28.
The cigarette is inserted as explained above. The button I5 is then pushed forwardly toward the cigarette, which operation carries the roller 22 to the position shown in Figure l and also carries the members 2l in the same direction as that of the roller. This movement of the members 21 causes the jaws 29 to compress against the end periphery of the cigarette whereby it is grasped and held firmly in the holder.
When the cigarette burns down to the desired length, the button I5 is forced toward the end II of the holder, which operation carries the roller 22 against the spring tension of the spring portion 2E, the roller being shown by the dotted construction in Figure 1. At the same time the members 2l are forced away from the holder with the cut out portions at 28 allowing them to spring apart, whereby the jaws 29 will also spring apart and the cigarette will fall out of the opening since it is then entirely unrestricted.
It will be understood that in the construction shown in Figure l the member Ill includes out out portions to allow the arms I'I to pass down wardly without bending of the arms, such cut ouiI portions extending from the eXtreme left hand or forward end of the body I0 to the surface 3l) at the right as seen in Fig. 5. Even though this end is cut away, the cigarettes will be firmly held by virtue of the firm engagement of the gripping jaws.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modied forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
l. -A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece having a cigarette receiving end portion, said end portion having a substantially conical depression therein for receiving a cigarette end snugly, means for gripping said cigarette to rmly hold the same, said means including a pair of jaws adapted to snugly engage portions of said cigarette, arms attached to said jaws, other arms pivotally attached to said first-mentioned arms whereby pivotal movement of said other arms will retract said jaws, said other arms being pivotally attached to said mouthpiece, and a button pivotally attached at the upper extremity of said other arms.
2. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece having a cigarette receiving end portion, said end portion having a substantially conical depression therein for receiving a cigarette end snugly, means for gripping said cigarette to rmly hold the same, said means including a pair of jaws adapted to snugly engage portions of said cigarette, arms attached to said jaws, other arms pivotally attached to said first-mentioned arms whereby pivotal movement of said other arms will retract said jaws, said other arms being pivotally attached to said mouthpiece, a button pivotally attached at the upper extremity of said other arms, a roller attached at the lower end of said other arms, and a spring for retaining said roller in selected position.
3. A cigarette holder comprising a mouthpiece having a cigarette receiving end portion, said end portion having a substantially conical depression therein for receiving a cigarette end snugly, means for gripping said cigarette to rmly hold the same, said means including a pair of spring urged jaws adapted to snugly engage portions 4 of said cigarette, arms attached to said jaws, other arms pivotally attached to said first-mentioned arms whereby pivotal movement of said other arms will retract said jaws, said other arms being pivotally attached to said mouthpiece, a button pivotally attached at the upper extremity of said other arms, a roller attached at the lower end of said other arms, a spring for retaining said roller in selected position, said first-mentioned arms being normally spring-urged outwardly, and slots in said mouthpiece receiving said first-mentioned arms whereby inward movement of the inst-mentioned arms will cause said jaws to close.
