JOHN BECKER, OF WARREN, IDAHO.
CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application filed October 7, 1927. Serial No. 224,646.
The object of the invention is to provide a cigar or cigarette holder equipped with adjustable means for effecting a firm grip on the cigar or cigarette; to provide adjusting means for themovement of the gripping means longitudinally of the mouthpiece, so that when the cigar or cigarette is nearly consumed the gripping elementmay.
cated by the lines 33 and 4-4 of Figure 1..
The gripper or chuck 10 by which the cigar or cigarette is secured in place is of tubular form and split axially on diametrically opposite sides to provide the j aws 10 and 10 which may move relatively towards each other to grip the cigar or cigarette by means of a U shaped latch member 11 extending around the jaw 10* and having pivotal mountings 13 on the jaw 10 at diametrically opposite sides of the latter. The latch member is preferably formed of a strand of spring wire with loops 14 adjacent the pivot to provide some spring action and with a centrally disposed finger piece 15 by which it may be rocked. On the interior faces the two jaws are provided. each with a rib 16 formed by crimping the material thereof, so that a recess is provided on the outside of the jaw 10* for the reception of the body portion of the latch when the jaws are in their widest separated positions. A series of crimps 17 are formed on the jaw 10 arranged in spaced relation axially of the gripper and any one of these may be engaged by the body portion of the latch, engagement of each succeeding crimp successively drawing the jaws closer together. Thus the gripper may be effectively clamped to the extremity of a cigar or cigarette.
The gripper is mounted for movement axi'ally of the mouthpiece is which on dia-- metrically opposite sides'is provided with longitudinal grooves 19 in which axial 20 of the gripper slide. .Operatively connected. with the gripper is a sleeve E21 crimped to provide interior threads 22 engageable with a spiral rib 23 on the'gripper. The sleeve'is positioned on the outer end ofthe mouthpiece, having an inturned flange 24 abutting a circumferribs ential shoulder 25 on the mouthpiece, this construction precluding movement of the sleeve axially in one direction and axial movement in the other direction is prevented by radial pins 26 set in the mouthpiece at diametrically, opposite sides and abutting] the flange on the opposite side from that which engages the shoulder. The sleeve is thus permitted angular movement on the mouthpiece but is precluded from axial movement thereon, while the gripper is precluded from angular movement-but permitted axial movement. Thus the rotation.
of the sleeve will effect movement of the gripper to extend it from the mouthpiece, when the jaws may be readily engaged with a cigar or cigarette and the latch member set in one of the crimps to effect the best gripping operation. The sleeve may then be rotated to draw the gripper backward until the end of the cigar or cigarette seats in the end of the mouthpiece, when smoking may be proceeded with until the cigar or cigarette is almost consumed, when the gripper may be further withdrawn by the rotation of the sleeve, thus exposing the portion of the cigar or cigarette previously engaged by the gripper, when further smoking may take place until the cigar or cigarette is entirely consumed.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a mouthpiece, a gripper having article-engaging aws, said gripper being mounted for movement. axially of the mo'uth piece but precluded from angular movement thereon, and an adjusting sleeve engaged with. the gripper and carried by the mouthpiece on which it is permitted angular or turning movement but precluded from axial movement.
2. The structure of claim 1 in which the sleeve at one end provided with an inturned flangev and abutting a shoulder on sthc mouthpiece, and pins carried hy" the mouthpiece and abutting the flange on the opposite side of said shoulder.
3. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a mouthpiece and a gripper bodily adjustable longitudinally thereof, the gripper comprising spring ,jZUWSflQHCl a latch member pivotally engaged with one of the "jaws and embracing the other.
4. A device for *the purpose indicated -GOiY131lSlIl a 'inouthniece and a i ri or bodily adjustable longitudinally"thereof, the gripper comprising spring jaws, a'nd -a'latch member'pivotally engaged with one of the jaws and embracing the other, the latch member being provided with a radial extension for finger actuation. a
5. A device for the purpose indicated comprising a mouthpiece and a gripper bodily adjustable longitudinally thereof, the grip: per comprising spring jaws, and a latch :rnem-her pivotally engaged with one of the jaws and embracing the other, the latch member:tbeingrprovided with aradial extension for finger actuation and the jaw em-= braced by the latch mem-ber having plurality o'f notches spacedaxially of thegrip- Aper and selectively 'engagea'ble 'bythe' -latch member. j
In testimony whereof he 'ture.
