Description
July 19, 1932.
G. E. EVEY PLIERS Filed Feb. 5, 1931 Patented July 19, 1932 UNITED STATES GEORGE E. EVEY, OF TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA runes Application filed February '5, 1931'. Serial No. 513,680.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools, and particularly to pliers of the adjustable type.
In the common pliers, wherein one of the members is formed with a transverse slot,
terminating in circular portions, for the purpose of shifting the members so as to change the position of the pivot, and thereby cause the jaws to be separated for difl'erent distances, to permit gripping large or small work, the portion of the slot, intermediate the ends, becomes worn, with the result that the members will not remain in their narrow separated adjustment, and the discarding of the pliers. The principal object of the present invention is to provide pliers of this type, which.
are so constructed, with relation to the adj ustable pivot connection, that the pivot may be shifted from one place to another, and accomplish its intended function, without slipping, and without the disadvantage above mentioned. M
Another object is to so arrange the slot so that whether or not the walls thereof become worn, so as to widen said slot, the adjustment of the pivoted members of the pliers will properly function in any of theiradjusted positions. v
Another object is to provide pliers of the adjustable type wherein the pivoted members are capable of adjustment to cause the jaws to move longitudinally of each other, for the purpose of reducing the size of'the 3 notched opening between said jaws, whereby to germit grasping very. small objects.
ther objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 i an elevation of a pair of pliers, made in accordance with the present invention, in position for gripping medium sized work.
Figure 2 is an elevation of; the pliers, in
cooperation with the jaw 14, for gripping work. In the portion 16 there is formed an O0 approximate T-shaped slot, including the head portion 32 andthe curved leg portion 35, connected intermediately with the head portion 32. In the outer ends of the head .portion 32 there are formed the circular por- OI tions 33and 34, while in the outer extremity of the leg portion 35 there is formed a. similar circular portion 36.
The pivot member of the pliers, for connecting the members, and permittlng the dif- 70 ferent adjustments, consists of a bolt, desig-- nated, as a whole by the numeral 24, and including a shank having three portions, an outer threaded end portion 25, and intermediate portion 26 angular in cross section, and 76 the inner end portion 27, the latter having two opposite fiat faces 28, and the two opposite outwardly curvedor bowed faces 29, forming parts of a complete circle, which permits free rotation within the said circular 8 portions of the T-shaped slot, while the flat faces permit sliding of the bolt through'the portions of the slot, between thesaid circular portions. On the last-named end of the bolt 24 is a head 36," which bears on the outer wide face of the portion 16, of they member 11, as shown in the drawing. The angular portion 26, of the bolt, is disposed in an angular opening in the member 10 to prevent rotation of the bolt therewithin, while the 9 threaded end of the bolt projects beyond the v outer wide face of the portion 13, of the member 10, to receive a nut thereon,'whereby to 7 hold. the bolt against rotation, and maintain the pivoted members 10 and 11 in proper slid- '5' 'ing contact with each other.
I When the parts are- 'n the osition shown. in Figure 1, the pivot bolt ies withm the circular portion 34, of the slot 17, whereby the jaws of the plie'rs will grip comparative- I 1y work of ordinary size, the rounded faces 29, of the pivot bolt 24" permitting the free pivotal movement of the members 10 and 11 thereon. To adjust the pliers for large work, the operator holds the shank of the member 11, swings the member 10 until it lies at approximately right angles to the member 10, moves the member 10 toward the left, so as to cause the pivot bolt 24 to slide in the leg portion 35, of the slot, until the bolt lies within the circular portion 36. Pivotal movement of the members 10 and 11, may now be accomplished, the jaws 14 and 16' spaced a greater distance apart, so that they may grip work of greater diameter.
The pliers are also adapted for gripping work of smaller diameter than can be gripped, when adjusted into the position of Figure 1, such adjustment being. clearly shown in Figure 2, Wherein the jaw 16' lies inwardly from the jaw 14.,
Attention is particularly called to the fact that the portion 35, of the T-shaped slot, is slightly curved in the direction of the handle portion of the member 11, and that such portion extends transversely of said member, whereby the circular terminal 36 lies in the same plane as the circular portion 34, of the part 32, so that the jaws 14 and 16 will properly engage each other, in either of their adjustments toward and away from each other.
It is to be particularly noted that the circular end portions ofthe slot parts are located remote from the junctures of such portions with the elongated parts, so that the pivot bears against the circular walls of said circular portions, thereby preventing any wear on the ends of the side walls of the elongated slot parts, at the said junctures.
In the present device, even should the straight portions of the slotbecome widened, by wear, the members'ofthe pliers will operate properly, no matter in what position they have been adjusted, as the wear, during the pivotal movement of the members is wholvly within the circular portions of the slot.
What is claimed is:
'1. Adjustable pliers comprising a pair of.
crossed pivoted members having terminal 'cooperatingjaws, one of the members havlng a longitudinal slot in its pivotal portion formed with a circular portion at each end,
and a transverse slot having one end intersecting the longitudinal slot intermediately and having a circular portion at its other end, and a pivot member onthe pivotal portion of the other member having ahead of greater width than said slots and circular portions and movable in said slots to permit ad ustment of said jaws toward and away from eachother and longitudinally of each other, said pivot being rotatable in said circular portions; v v
2. Adjustable pliers comprising crossed members having terminal jaws, one of said members having a-longitudinal slot and a transverse slot intersecting the longitudinal slot intermediately, a .pivot carried by the other member slidable in said longitudinal slot to permit longitudinal movement of the members and the adjustment of said jaws past each other and slidable in the transverse slot to permit transverse movement of the members to adjust said jaws toward and away from each other, means in the ends of the longitudinal slot. for engagement with the pivot to hold the members in adjusted position longitudinally past each other, means in the outer end of the other slot for engagement with the pivot to hold the members in adjusted positions toward and away from each other, and a head on said pivot of greater dimensions than said slots and said slot end means.
3. Adjustable pliers comprising crossed members having terminal cooperating jaws on their corresponding ends, one of said members having a longitudinal slot and a transverse slot intersecting the lon 'tudinal slot intermediately, a pivot carrie by the other member slidable in said longitudinal slot to permit longitudinal movement of the members and the adjustment of said jaws past each other and slidable in the transverse slot to permit transverse movement of the members to adjust said jaws toward and away from each other, enlargements in GEORGE E.
