To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES C. Forsrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- peka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Safety-Razor-Blade Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved device to hold a safety razor blade and enable the blade to be readily stropped, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device of this kind which is cheap and simple in construction, is strong and durable, and which forms a holder for a safety razor blade and enables the blade to be readily stropped and to be then readily detached from the holder. In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a tubular handle 1 which has a closure 2 at one end provided with a pair of crossed slots 3, ll, of unequal length, the slot 3 being shorter than the slot 41- and the intersection of said slots corresponding with the center of the closure and so that a central,
opening is formed in the closure. Each slot is provided with a substantially semi-circular outer end as shown. The opposite end of thetubular handle is interiorly threaded to bore of the tubular handle so that the follower pin is centered in the bore of the handle and is also adapted to move longitudinally therein. To prevent the follower pin from turning, I provide a guide pin 9 which projects inwardl through an openlng 10 in one sideof the tubular handle and has a notch 11 at its inner end,'the
sides of said notch being at right angles to each other so that said notch is adapted to receive and fit one edge 8 of the follower pin; The follower pin bears against and is moved longitudinally by the screw plug 5. At the front end of the follower pin is a centrally arranged projection 12 which is flattened on opposite -sides as at 13 and'is also beveled on opposite edges as at 14:, so that said-projection is pointed.
T also provide a pair of jaws 15 for gripping a safety razor blade between them. These jaws are substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section, have their flattened s1des opposed to each other and have their outer ends inwardly beveled as at 16 to facilitate the insertion of a razor blade between them The opposing sides of the jaws are also hollowed longitudinally and transversely as at 17, at points spaced from the outer ends of the jaws. The inner ends, of the jaws are enlarged as at 18 and arranged in the tubular handle, the jaws projectlng out through the central opening in the closure 2 and bein engaged in one of the crossed slots in sai closure. 'VVhen the holder is to be used for' gripping a thin safety razor blade in which the opposing sides of the jawsv are to come directly in contact, with opposite surfaces of the blade, the jaws are arranged in the shorter slot 3, as'shown in Fig. 9. When, however, the

The blade may be gripped by edges 14 of the projecting portion 12 of the follower pin.
When a blade has been arranged between the jaws, the screw plug is then turned to cause the follower pin to move outwardly and in so doing force the inner ends of the enlarged portions of the jaws apart, thus causing the jaws to grip the blade between them. The blade is first gripped between the inner and outer ends of the jaws and as the thrust of the follower pin continues the hollowed surfaces 17 of the jaws grip the blade also, the jaws flexing slightly to permit this and hence the blade is gripped at all points from end to end between the opposing surfaces of the jaws and is firmly and securely held.
The tapered shoulder 19 of the jaws preventsthe jaws from sliding forwardly and also assists in bringing the jaws together.

Owing to their cross sectional semi-cylindrical form, the jaws, when the device is used for stropping a blade enable the blade to be readily turned to present either edge thereof'to the strop as will be understood.
Having described; the invention, what claimed 1s:
1. In a safety razor blade holder, a tubuvided with a slot, in combination with a pair of .blade gripping jaws extending through said slot, and having enlarged inner portions arranged in the tubular handle and provided with a tapered shoulder to bear against the inner side of said closure, a follower pin in the handle, having a pointed end engaging the inner endsof the jaws and a screw in the outer end of the handle to move said follower pin and cause the latter to spread the jaws at the inner ends of the jaws and thereby cause the outer portions of the jaws to grip a blade between them.
2. In a safety razor blade holder, a tubular handle, a pair of blade gripping jaws, a follower pin to operate the jaws, said follower pin being polygonal in cross section, and fitted for longitudinal movement in the tubular handle, a screw to operate said pin, and a guide pin for. the follower pin, said guide pin projecting into the bore of the handle and having a notch to engage one edge of the follower pin.
3. In a device of the class described a tubular handle having a closure at one end provided with crossed slots of unequal length and intersecting at the center, a pair of gripping jaws extending through one of said slots and having enlarged inner portions arranged in the handle and provided with a tapered shoulder to bear against the inner side of said closure, a follower pin mounted for longitudinal movement and having a pointed end engaged between the innerQends of the enlarged inner portions of the jaws, said pin being removable from the tubular handle to permit the jaws to be arranged in either of said slots, and means to operate-said pin.
4. In a device of the class described, a handle having a portion provided with a slot, a pair of jaws extending through and arranged inthe ends of the said slot, said jaws having a tapered shoulder on the inner side of said portion and being provided at their inner ends with camming grooves, a follower pin mounted for longitudinal movementand having a pointed end engaged in said camming grooves, and means to operate said pin.
