TOOL-HOLDER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,852, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed June 28, 1899.
[ (1.6L wrtom; it 'ntrty concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK B. KENDRICK, of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Tool-Holder, of which the following is a full, clean-audexact description. My invention relatesto an adjustable pinvise and tool-holder especially adapted for the use of dentists and jewelers. IO The object of the invention is to construct a device of the character described that may be operated by one hand and in which springtempered jaws are provided that automat ically open when released from the pressure 1 5 ofa regulating device, the regulating device also serving to close the jaws upon the tool or object passed between them, and wherein further means are provided for subsequently locking the jaws in gripping or binding engagement with the article they carry.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, aswill be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out inthe clarims.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference in dicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the-improved o device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal verticalsection through the device, the clamping-jaws being in an open position. Fig. 3 is a longi tudinal vertical section through thedevice, the clamping-jaws being shown as closed for 55 engagement with an object passed between them and not locked; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device, I The handle A of the tool is preferably made tapering, being largest atits lower or outer 0 end, and at said lower outer end the handle is provided with longitudinal ribs 10 or is otherwise roughened to afiord a grip for the fingers. A ferrule 'B is introduced into the larger end'of the handle A, and said ferrule 5' extends beyond the outer end of the handle andis provided with a collar 11, that has bearing against the said outer end of the handle, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The bore of the ferrule B is in two diameters, the lesser di-' ameter being at the inner end of the ferrule, and at the lesser diameter of the bore of the ferrule a thread 12 is produced.
stratum-722,204.. (Ncmcdelfi A clutch or clamping device 0 isemployed 'in' connection with the ferrule B, being adapted to. enter the same. This clutch or clamping device consists of a tube 13, having an with the thread 12 in the ferrule, and the ex terior diameter of the said tube 13 is less than the diameter of the. larger portion of the bore and The tube 13 of the clutch or clamp,- ing device is provided with longitudinal slots 14, that extendthrough the outer end or head of the said, device. These slots are usually four in number, although any desired number may be employed, and these slots divide the headD of'the device into mating and opposing jaws 15. -These jaws 15 are very similar to ordinary cl utch-jaws,- having straight inner edges, and their outer surfaces being beveled or inclined from a point in their length upwardly and inwardly in direction of the. center of the head and then from said point downwardly and inwardly, as shown at 16 in the drawings.
-.A regulating-sleeveE is used in connection with the clutch or clamping device'C, and this regulating-sleeve is provided at its outer end with an interior taper 17, corresponding to the lower tapered portion of the head D of the clutch or clamping device. The lower portion of the regulating-sleeve is. enlarged in diameter, thus fiorming -a shoulder 18, and at the inner end of the said regulating-sleeve a roughened exterior or knurled surface 19 is formed, enabling the sleeve to be either turned by the fingers or to be given end movement. Theinner end of the sleeve is mounted to slide over the outer projecting portion of the tube orpshank section of the clutch or clamping device 0, which spring has bearing against the shoulder 18 of the sleeve and against the outer projecting end of the ferrule 13. The spring normally forces the regulating-sleeve E outward, thus normally holding thejaws of the head D practically together; but when the sleeve E is drawn in direction of the handle the jaws of the head I) automaticallysepa rate, owing to the spring character of the material of the, tube 13, of which they form a part, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The tool may now be passed into the space exterior thread at one end adaptedv to engage of the ferruleB, as is also shown in Figs. 2
ferrule B and a spring 20 is coiled around the a between the jaws of the head D, and when l ferrule and a regulating-sleeve having slid said tool has been placed in position between said jaws the sleeve E is released and the spring 20forces the sleeve outward and causes the jaws to close against the shank of the tool. The jaws are now locked upon the tool or article introduced between them bysiniplyturning the sleeve E, the handle A being held stationary,and these objects can be accomplished by the use of one hand. Upon turning the sleeve E when in its initial position the frictional engagement between the outer end of the sleeve and the head 1) of the clamping device will cause the said clamping device to turn also, and when the sleeve is moved in one direction the clamping device will be screwed into the ferrule, and consequently the jaws of the head D will be drawn as far as possible into the outer end of the sleeve E. Then the tool is to be released, the sleeve E is turned in an opposite direction, thus unscrewing the clamping device 0 from the bandle and causing the jaws of the head D to open to a greater or less extent, and at the same time the sleeve E is carried away from the collar 11 of the ferrule. By drawing the sleeve E in direction of the handle the jaws of said head D will open to their full extent and the tool may be dropped out.
When the device is used as a pin-vise, an opening 21 is made longitudinally in-the handle, extendingfrom end to end, beingin communication with the interior of the tube-section of the clutch or clamping device, and preferably the handle A is always provided with the longitudinal opening 21, so that the device can be used as an ordinary clutch for light work or as a pin-vise.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A pin-vise comprising a handle, a ferrule in said handle and having an interior screwthread, a clutch in the form of a slotted spring-tube having its rear end formed with an interior thread fitted to the thread in the ing movement on the clutch and springpressed toward the outer orsplit end thereof, the said sleeve when pressed outon the clutch coming into frictional engagement therewith, whereby a turning of the sleeve will screw the clutch into or out of the ferrule, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A pin-vise and tool-holder comprising a handle, a ferrule having a shoulder between its ends, and inserted in the end of the handle with the shoulder resting on the edge of the same, the inserted end of the ferrule being formed with an interior thread, a clutch in the form of a slotted tube inserted in said ferrule and having a threaded rear end engaging the thread of the ferrule and an inclined head and a regulating-sleeve slidably fitted on the outer end of the ferrule beyond the shoulder thereof and having its outer end inclined to correspond to the head of the clutch, the said sleeve being spring-pressed outward into frictional engagement with the head of the clutch, as and for the purpose set forth. I I
3. A pin-vise and tool-holder, consisting of a handle having an aperture extending through the same, a clutch or clamping device eomprising a slotted spring-tube having a screw connection with said handle and terminating in jaws at its outer end, said jaws having their outer surfaces tapered from a given point between their ends upwardly and inwardly and downwardly and inwardly, a regulating-sleeve held to slide upon a portion of the handle and over the tube of the clutch or clamping device, one portion of the sleeve being arranged for frictional engagement with the said jaws, and a spring arranged to normally hold said portion of the sleeve in engagement with the said jaws, as described.
