UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
SAMUEL W. MARTIN, OF SPRINGFIELD, OHIO.
PUMP-STRAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,352, dated February 28, 1882.
Application filed December 27, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. IVIARTIN, of Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of- Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Pump-Strainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a strainer designed for application to the lower end of the suction or supply pipe of pumps, more particularly that class of pumps which is employed for domestic purposes.
The inventionconsists in a body consisting of two equal perforated sections united by means of a bolt, and adapted to be held around the lower end of the suction-pipe by friction. Heretofore strainers have been constructed in many different forms for use upon the suctionpipe, the usual custom being to cast them in one piece of cylindrical form, and subsequently drill the holes therein, connecting them to the lower end of the pipe by means of a screwthrcad. This construction involved considerable expense, and necessitated the cutting of a thread upon the lower end of the pipe, renderingit'impossible for the farmer or other person unprovided with tools to apply the strainer. In practice it is found desirable to provide a device which will admit of the purchaser cutting the suction-pipe to a proper length to suit the well, and then applying the strainer without trouble and without the employment of skilled workmen.
Referringto the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the halves or sections of the body.
A represents the suction-pipe of the pump, and B the perforated strainer applied thereto. As plainly represented in the drawings, the strainer consists of two equal semi-cylindrical sections, which, when fitted together, form a cylindrical perforated body closed at the lower end. In the drawings the strainer is represented with four vertical rows or series of openings, two of which rows are formed by casting notches or indentations in the body-sec. tions in such manner that when the sections are joined together the notches will register and form round openings. This construction is advantageous for the reason that it permits the parts to be cast readily and accurately,
and without difficulty in the employment of the cores.
0 represents the transverse bolt passing through and uniting the two parts or sections, and serving to hold them together and compress them firmly around and against the lower end of the pipe A.
The body sections are preferably constructed with internal flanges to regulate their position when applied to the pipe, and with internal lips, I), at their edges, to retain them in the proper relative position.
If desired, the sections may be given a slight longitudinal curvature, so that when drawn together by means of the bolt they will combine around the pipe with an elastic or spring pressure, whereby they will be caused to engage the more firmly thereon.
The form or configuration of the parts and the minor details may be modified to any extent desired, provided the general mode of construction and application is not departed from.
While it is preferred to make use of the bolt as a means of uniting the body-sections, it is obvious that a rivet or ring driven over the outside, or any equivalent fastening device, may beemployed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- l. Asa new article of manufacture, the pump -strainer consisting of the perforated body-sections united by a bolt or equivalent fastening device.
2. In combination'with the pipe A, the divided strainer and the bolt or its equivalent, whereby the strainer is secured to the pipe by frictional contact.
3. The improved pump -strainer, consisting of the body-sections having their edges ser rated to form openings when united, substantially as described and shown.
4. The perforated body-sections, provided
