STEAM-PIPE HANGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,333, dated February 28, 1882. Application filed J anuary 13, 1862. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM KANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Pipe Hangers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists in constructing a steam-pipe hangerin the peculiar manner fully described hereinafter, with the view of preventing the fracture of the pipe-supporting hooks, which frequently takes place in ordinary hangers of this class.

In the accompanying drawings,Fignre 1 is a perspective view of steam-heating pipes supported by my improved hangers Fig. 2, a perspective view, drawn to a larger scale, of the hanger-plate without the supporting-hooks Figs. 3 and 4, perspective views of one of the supporting-hooks Fig. 5, a vertical section of part of the hanger-plate and supportinghook, and Fig. 6 a modification of my invention.

An ordinary steam-pipe hanger consists of a plate with hooks cast in one piece with the plate, which is secured to the wall, the pipes being placed on the hooks, which are liable to break, owing to the change in the relative position of the different lengths of pipes in a coil under the influence of changes of temperature. In order to prevent this I make the books A for supporting the pipes separate from the hanger-plate B, the latter having in the present instance a'series of openings,a, as best observed in Fig. 2.

On the plate B are cast a series of lugs, 11, one on each side of each opening, a, and each lug has aprojeeting pin, (7, two of these pins constituting a pivot for one of the hooks A. In the present case there are on the plate four of these pivots for four hooks, adapted to the four lengths of pipe of which the coil shown in Fig. 1 is composed. Each hook A has at its upper end two recesses or sockets, 71., separated from each other by the rib i at the back and under side of the hook, and these sockets are adapted to two of the pivot-pins d (1.

Below each opening a in the hanger-plate is a rib, 112, having a notch, 01., for receiving the rib z of the hook, so that the latter is confined laterally above and below to the hanger-plate, and therefore cannot be displaced by the longitudinal expansion and contraction of thepipe which it aids in supporting.

Steam-heating pipes of the character shown in Fig. 1,even if the lengths are made parallel with each other in the first instance, are apt to lose their relative position under the influence of changes of temperature, and there is often a tendency of one or more of the lengths to move outward from the hangers, this often resulting in the fracture of hooks which are cast on the hanger-plate. By pivoting the hooks to the plate, however, they are at liberty to accommodate themselves to any outward movement of the pipes.

It is not essential that the precise construct-ion above described ot' the hanger should be adhered to. The hanger-plate, for instance, may be made as shown in Fig. 6, the pivot 01 consisting of a single pin instead of being in two parts, and the hook A consisting of abent plate of wronghtiron, and being laterally guided by lugs ff on the plate. I, however, prefer the mode of construction first described.

Should one of the hooks A become broken, it can readily be replaced without the necessity of replacing the entire hanger, as usual.

I claim as my invention-- 1. A steam-pipe hanger in which a hangerplate, B, is combined with pivoted and laterallyheld hooks A, substantially as described.

2. The plate B, provided with lugs 11, each having a projecting pin, cl, and with ribs m, each having anotch, 72, in combination with books A, adapted to two of the pins (1, and having at the back a rib adapted to a notch in one of the ribs m, all substantially as set forth.
