This invention 'is concerned with -an improved handle for a :filing cabinet which handle has incorporatedtherein a labeliholder.
The-object of the invention is'to providesa-handle for a-filing cabinet which is characterized' by a horizontally extending band portionhaving a relieved section intermediate the :ends thereof, the vertical face of the relieved section being slanted readwardlyzand upwardlyof the vertical face of the-band portion 'and being provided-with a'bottom ledge formation for supporting a label and a snap-on cover of transparent material adapted to be positioned in the :re'lie-ved section and to cooperate with the ledge .in forming-a relatively shallow recess for con'fining the label therein in fully 'supported and protected relation.
While the foregoing statement is indicative in a. general way ofthe nature of theinvention, other more specific-objects and-advantages will be apparent to those skilled in the art upon a full understanding of the handle and the label holder which "areshown" by 'way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspeetiveqview of a filing cabinet equipped with the improved handle;
Fig. '2 is a face view label .holding shield removed;
.Fig. .3 'is a .top edge :view :of the handle likewise with "the shield removed;
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line E-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a view similar toFig. 5 showing the label holding shield in position; and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the shield.
In Figure 1 a handle III, which incorporates therein the principles of the applicant's invention, is shown applied to the front face of one of the forwardly moving panels I I of the filing cabinet I2. The panel II forms the front Wall of a container which either tilts or slides forwardly to give access to the papers or other material filed in the container. The container II is elongated horizontally and the handle I0 preferably extends a substantial part of the length of the panel whereby to enable the panel to be opened by grasping the handle at any convenient point throughout its length. The handle I0 is attached to the panel I I in any suitable manner, as by screws (not shown) which pass forwardly through the back of the panel into concealed apertures I3 in the back of the handle.
The handle I0 is formed of generally T-shaped of the handle with "the cross section throughout its length as shown 'in Fig. 4, being characterized by a vertically disposed finger grippingband portion I 4 and 'by:a horizontally disposed web portion l5. 'The web portion I5 extends from the band :portion I4 rearwardly preferably into engagement Witlrthe front 'face "of the panel at :a point int'ermedia'te the upper and lower edges of the band portion. At the ends of the handle the band portion I-4 is preferably curved rearwardly at Ifi into endwise abutment with the front 'face -0f the panel.
The band portion M of the handle is provided at one point intermediate its ends, preferably at its center, with a relieved section I! "for the reception of a labelholding shield =I'8. The'relieved section I! is formed so that "the vertical face thereof slants rearwardly and upwardly of the bottom edge of'the band portion. A relatively narrow rib formation is provided along :thebottom edge of the relieved section I"! providing a ledge Iii spaced-a short distance from thBJbOttCm edge of the band portion. 'The ledge formation 19 is adapted to support the bottom edge of the label 2t and is of approximately the same .depth as the thickness of .the label. The top 1 and :bottom edges 2! and 122 of :the relieved section are offset inwardly of the corresponding 1 edges .;of the band section, the top edge 21 being also offset rearwardly of the vertical face of the .band section due to the slant provided on the front :face of the .relieved section. A,grooveziiiijsformediin the rear face of the relieved.:section IJI ;which:extends along the top edge 2I thereof.
The shield I8 is made 'of a transparent plastic material, and preferably formed by extrusion. The shield I8 is channel-shaped and dimensioned so that it is received in the relieved section IT. The top of the shield I8 is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 24 having a downwardly extending edge 25 which is adapted to seat in the groove 23 of the relieved section I 1 when the shield is in position thereof. The bottom edge of the shield I8 is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 26 which terminates in a thickened or beaded edge portion 27. The shield I8 is relatively thin and resilient so that when positioned in the relieved section I? the beaded edge 21 may be snapped over the bottom edge 22 of the relieved section II to hold the shield in position with the lower margin of the front face and the bottom flange 26 thereof substantially flush with the adjoining surfaces of the band portion I4.
The label 20 is first placed with its bottom edge in supporting relation on the ledge I9 after which the shield I8 is positioned with the rear edge 25 of the top flange 24 seated in the groove 23. The shield I8 is then pivoted downwardly and the bead 21 is forced over the bottom edge 22. The shield snaps into position with the head 21 engaging the rear edge of the bottom 22 of the relieved section. With the shield i8 in this position the label 20 is firmly gripped between the inner surface of the front wall of the shield l8 and the front face of the relieved section I! along the top margins of the label. The shield I8 and the ledge l9 cooperate to form with the front face of the relieved section I? a relatively shallow pocket or recess for receiving the label 20. The vertical edges 28 and 29 of the band portion l4 adjacent the relieved section H are curved inwardly and the outer surface of the shield l8 merges at the end edges with the same when the shield is in position in the relieved section. When the shield I8 is in position in the relieved section 11 there are no projecting portions extending beyond the front and top and bottom surfaces of the adjoining band portion which might catch on the clothing of anyone brushing against the handle.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention is presented herein by way of exemplification, it will of course be appreciated that the invention is susceptible of embodiment in other structurally modified forms coming equally within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
