In the business of repairing fur coats, `jackets,

.neck pieces, etc., it is customary 4for 'each vartisan `sorting through the heap of miscellaneous patch pieces he discards the pieces he does not want vby placing them 'in a separate pile and when he has finally located a suitable piece, this `pile of discared patch pieces must be gathered up and replaced in the receptacle Vfrom which they have been taken for storage until another job is to be done. patch pieces -is slow and Wastes considerable time, moreover, there is a good chance for the pieces to become soiled land lost. Objects of this invention are, therefore, to provide a device within which the artisan may store his assortment of `repair patch pieces, which he Amay use 'to assist him in speeding up sorting operations, which will be simple to construct, cheap, and effective in operation. Other objects are to provide a receptacle which will facilitate keeping the fur patch pieces clean vand free from debris 'in the form of Small unusable cuttings .and trimmings, threads, hair and other dirt, which will facilitate .separating this debris from the patch pieces without dumping them out `of the device, and wherein there is storage space for the implements, thread, etc., used in the repair work.

Accordingly and as illustrated herein the sorting device is a receptacle in the Vform of two suhstantially rectangular box parts each of which has an open side, the parts being assembled together with the open sides juxtaposed and joined together by hinge means soy Vthat they Vmay be 'moved angularly with lrespect to each other 'to aiford access to one or 'both parts or `to bring them together to form a closed box within which may be stored an assortment of fur patch pieces. One boX part has a 'continuous groove on the inM side of three or its Walls near its lopen side, `a slot through `the Afourth wall lwhich is communication 'with `the groove, 'and a slide member is 'si-tu ated Within the groove with a portion thereof passing through the slot whereby 'the slide may `be moved through the slot to close or open the open side. .'tached. the front -`wall 122` there is '.itoitmed a slot 34 which opens into the ends of the groove 32 in the opposite side walls and within this groove there is placed a slide board 36 which is of such dimensions as to pass through the slot 34 and slide freely in the groove 32. The outer, that is the exposed, end of the slide board 33 has a pull ring 38 pivotally attached thereto to permit movement of the slide board in the groove, that is, to facilitate withdrawing the slide board from the slot.

As thus constructed, a miscellaneous assortment of fur patch pieces F such as are used for repairing fur coats, neck pieces, etc., are placed in the lower box part I2 and the upper box part I4 is normally situated as shown in Fig. l to close the lower part, thus aording a closed receptacle for storing the fur ypatch pieces when not being used. In this condition the slide board 3E is pushed inwardly through the slot 34 so that it bridges the lower or open bottom of the upper part I4. Preferably the ring 38 is engaged with a tongue 4I fixed in the forward wall of the lower :box part I2 so that the two parts may be held together and the receptacle as a whole may be moved about without failing open and spilling its contents. When it is desirable to select a particular piece of fur for a repair job, the ring 38 is disengaged from the tongue 5I and the upper box part I4 is thrown back to an open position by tipping it about the hinges 2S so that it occupies the position shown in Fig. 2. The slide board 3S, is then withdrawn so as to uncover the open bottorn 26 of the upper box part and the artisan discards piece after piece of fur from the pile of fur situated in the lower box part by tossing them into the upper box part I4 until he iinds a suitable matching piece. Having removed the selected piece, he pushes the slide board 35 into the slot 32 so as to close the bottom or" the upper box part I4 and then he lifts the upper `box part and swings it back into engagement with the open top of the bottom box part, as shown in Fig. 4. He then withdraws the slide board 3E to uncover the bottom opening 25 thereby allowing the fur pieces deposited in the top part to fall by gravity into the bottom part. The slide board 36 is then returned to its original position, as shown in Fig. 1, and the sorting device is then ready to be set aside until another job is to be undertaken.

It may be desirable to provide the lower box part I2 of the aforesaid sorting device with a drawer 50 having a pull 42 thereon as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. This drawer may be for the purpose of storing needles and thread such as are employed in attaching the patches and other general repair work. In such a case the lower vbox part I2 may have a partition 46 (Fig. 6)

placed therein -by forming a ledge 44 peripherally of the walls I in the lower part upon which the :partition 135 is seated so as to provide a subjacent chamber 48 which is separate from the major portion of the lower part to accommodate the drawer 40. While this drawer may be used as heretofore indicated for implements, it is also within the scope of the invention to use this drawer for collecting and removing debris such as small clippings of fur, hair, thread and other dirt so that it is not necessary to dump all of the fur pieces from the sorter in order to remove an accumulation of such debris. If the drawer is used for this purpose, the partition 46 is in the form of aY screen or a reticulated member as indicated in Fig. 6 so that such material would fall i through into the open top of the drawer and can then be easily removed by pulling the drawer out and dumping it.

It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A sorting device comprising a two-part receptacle each part having an open side, hinge means joining said parts with their open sides juxtaposed so that one part may be moved angularly with respect to the other part, a partition associated with one part aiording a closure for the open side thereof when the parts are angularly disposed, and a dividing wall between the parts when they are juxtaposed, said partition being capable of being withdrawn from a position closing the open side of the one part and of being restored to closing position both when the parts are closed and when they are open, and a combined latch member and pull carried :by the partition, said latch member in one position being engageable with an element on the other part for securing the parts together and simultaneously preventing movement of said partition and in another position releasing the partition for movement and affording means for moving it into and out of closing position.

A sorting device comprising' a two-part receptacle each part having an open side, hinge joinine said parts with their open sides juxtaposed so that one part may vbe moved anguiarly with respect to the other part, a slide member associated with one part aiiording a closure for the open side thereof when the parts are angularly disposed, and a dividing wall between the parts when they are juxtaposed, said member being capable of being withdrawn from a position closing the open side of the one part and of being restored to closing position independently of the position of the parts, and latch means in the form of a ring pivctaliy attached to the one end or" the slide member and a tongue xed to a wall of the other part, said ring being engageabie with the tongue to hold the parts together.

A sorting device comprising a two-part receptacle each part having an open side, hinge means joining said parts with their open sides juxtaposed so that one part may be moved angulariy with respect to the other part, a slide member associated with one part aiording a closure for the open side thereof when the parts are angularly disposed, and a dividing wall between the parts when they are juxtaposed, said member being capable of being withdrawn from a position closing the open side cf the one part and of being restored to closed position independently of the position of the parts,` and latch means in the form of a ring pivotally attached to one end of the siide and a tongue fixed to a wall of the other part, said ring being engageable and disengageable with the tongue by movement or" the slide member.

A sorting device comprising a two-part box, each part having an open side, said parts being assembled together with their open sides juxtaposed, hinge means joining the box parts for angular movement relative to each other, a slide member associated with one part affording a closure for that part when the parts are open anda dividing wall between the parts when the parts are juxtaposed, said member being capable of be ing moved into and out or" closed position irrespective of the position of the parts, and a perforate partition in the other part spaced from the bottom thereof, one Wall of said other part having an aperture therein opening into the space .between the partition and the bottom.

5. A sorting device comprising a two-part box each part having an open side, said parts being assembled together with their open sides juxtaposed, hinge means joining the box parts foJ.` angular movement relative to each other, a member associated with one part affording a closure for that part when the parts are open, and a dividing wall between the parts when the parts are juxtaposed, said member being capable of being Withdrawn from the closed position, a partition in the other part spaced from the bottom thereof, one of the walls of said other part having a slot therein opening into the space below the partition, and a drawer situated in the subjacent space r'and movable into and out thereof through the The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
