Description
Jan. 9, 1951 A. M. COUSER HAIRPIN ADJUSTER Filed Dec. 3, 1948 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 9, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIRPIN ADJUSTER Agnes M. Couser, Oceanside, Calif.
Application December 3, 1948, Serial No. 63,277
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a hairpin adjuster, and more particularly, has reference to an article novelly formed in a manner to adjust a hairpin, bobby pin, or the like to open position.
An important object of the present invention is to provide an adjuster of the character described that will be capable of manufacture at a complete minimum of cost.
Another important object is to provide a hair pin adjuster which will be attractive, fully efficient for its intended function, and which will be so formed as to be capable of use over an indefinite period of time.
Another important object is to provide an adjuster of the character stated that will be attractive, will be adapted for mounting at any location deemed particularly desirable by the user, and will take up little space.
Still another important object is to provide an adjuster of the character described that is capable of use with considerable facility, the adjuster being particularly and novelly designed as to permit operation by one hand of the user, so that in a single motion, the hand will both raise the hair .pin or bobby pin into position against the adjuster, and will cause the hair pin or bobby pin to be opened and positioned exactly in the users hand, ready for use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing, the single figure is a perspective View of the article.
Referring to the drawing in detail, I form the article with a pin-engaging portion l9, and in use of the article the user simply grasps the hobby pin or hair pin with one hand, between the thumb and forefinger, and brings it up into engagement with the said portion I 9. This single motion automatically causes the pin to be spread into open position, since the continuing upward pressure exerted by the thumb and forefinger will, as the long end of the pin comes into engagement with the portion 19, force the small end of the bobby pin upwardly, thus to adjust the hobby pin to open position.
When the bobby pin has been so adjusted to open position, it will be automatically positioned ready for use, that is, the bobby pin in open po- 2 sition will already be held between the thumb and forefinger, so that the user can insert it in the hair, or use it for any other purpose desired, such as securing a paper pattern to dress material, hemming up the end of a drape, or otherwise applying said bobby pin to the various uses for which it might be suited.
Considering the drawing, a body portion 16 is here provided with opposed parallel longitudibag portion to eilectively secure the article in proper position. The pin-engaging portion IQ of course will project outwardly, for use of the device as described hereinbefore.
Important characteristics of the invention may now be noted. One of these characteristics is the fact that the article is readily stamped in the simplest manufacturing operations from thin sheet metal stock, with the construction being adapted to permit said manufacture in considerable quantity.
Other important characteristics may also be noted. Although the article is adapted to be manufactured at extremely low cost, yet, it functions in cooperation with the users hand in a novel manner, to adjust a bobby pin to open position. In other words, simply by causing the hand holding the bobby pin to traverse the pinengaging-portion of the device, one end of the pin is engaged and the other end moves to open position in the single motion of the hand. Additionally, when the pin has been so adjusted to open position, it will already have been properly positioned with respect to the thumb and forefinger, ready for its intended use.
Additionally, other important characteristics of the invention may be noted in residing in the fact that it is adapted for mounting in various locations, and when mounted in proper position, occupies so little space as to be almost invisible, to the casual observer.
What is claimed is:
A hair pin adjuster comprising a single plate shaped to provide a fiat body portion, said body 3 portion having parallel rows of openings extended longitudinally thereof and respectively disposed adjacent the opposite longitudinal edges of said body portion, said openings being adapted to receive thread for stitching the body portion to a fabric support, pointed ears formed upon said longitudinal edges and disposed wholly in the plane of the body portion, said ears extending outwardly in opposite directions from said body portion, said earsbeingadapted itc-engagein said; support, and a; hair pineengaginglip extending;
out of the plane of one end of the body portion.
