Description

Jam 1.951 s. A. SCHECHTER 2,536,469
PICKPOCKET FROTECTOR Filed Dec. 16, 1949 INV Patented Jan. 2, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- Sam A. Schcchter, New York, N. Y.
Application December 16, 1949, Serial No. 133,383
This invention relates to. pocketbooks purses, and has for its object to provide improved means for fastening the same in closed position and attaching them to the clothing of the owners so that it will be impossible for said pocketbooks or purses to be stolen or the contents thereof removed Without the knowledge of the owner. Thus the invention provides the advantages of safety against theft by pickpockets, or loss of the pocket book or purse from any cause.
A further object of the invention is the production of a pickpocket protector that is simple in construction, economical to manufacture and highly serviceable in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawing a preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same; and
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawing the numeral 2 denote a wire member of thin steel, or plastic material, or the like which is bent to the shape of an inverted U I and having a short web portion and longitudinal flange portions whose ends are rolled so as to form a pair of registering loops 4. A longitudinal sheet or bar 5 of metal or the like has its longitudinal edge portions rolled around the major sections of the flange portions of the member 2, or is otherwise secured to the member 2, and has its extremity 6 rolled back upon itself and extended beyond the web portion of the wire member and being provided near said web portion with a longitudinal slot 8, whose upper portion is wider than its main portion. The numeral l0 denotes a substantially U-shaped jaw member, to which preferably is secured a sheet I2 whose longitudinal edges are rolled around sections of the web portion and of the lower flange portion of the member III, or which is secured thereto by means of welding, or soldering, or
2 Claims. (o1. 24-13 2 the like. The outer ends I4 of the lower web portion of the member Iii are bent outwardly and are rotatably extended through the loops 4.
A movable rod i5, that has at its lower end I 8 a hook-shaped portion which is co-extensive with the center section of an outer corner portion of said jaw member being vertically slidable in a loop member 20 which is secured to the sheet 5. The upper end of the rod [6 is loopshaped and the web portion of an. I-shaped member 22 is rotatably ext/ended therethrough as well as through the slot 8. The upper section of said slot, which is widened, being wider than the web portion of said I-shaped member while the remaining section of said slot is narrower than the web portion of said I-shaped member. Thus the member 22 can be rotated only when the rod I6 is in the position shown in full lines in the drawing. In this position the hook portion l8 engages the sheet 12 on the member Ill and holds the latter in the position shown in full lines. The member ID is so dimensioned that it can grip around a pocketbook or purse and presses the same against the parts 2 and [6 as long as the member I I is in the position shown in full lines.
A safety pin 24, or any other suitable, detachable fastening device, is secured to the rolled upper extremity E of the sheet 5, by extending a shank of the pin 24 through the extremity 6. By means of the safety pin 24, or its equivalent, the entire device can be secured to the lining 26 (Figure 2) of a pocket in which normally a purse or a pocketbook is carried. Thus a purse or a pocketbook can be secured within the pocket by means of my new and improved pickpocket protector. In order to remove from the pocket a purse or a pocketbook (not shown) secured by means of my new and improved pickpocket protector, the member 22 is first turned ninety degrees from its position shown in the drawing; then the member 22 and the rod l6 are shifted downwardly along the parts 2 and 5, so that the hook-shaped portion l8 of the rod it no longer engages the jaw member I0, and the latter can be tilted to the position shown in dash-and-dotted lines in Figure 2. Thereupon the pocketbook or the purse can be removed. When the pocketbook or the purse has been reinserted into my device, the member 22 is pulled upwardly until it reaches the widened upper portion of the slot 8, and then the member 22 is turned ninety degrees, so that the device is locked.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the 3 invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the inventiontvhioh ia's 'a niatter Tof 'ian uage might be saidtb 'fall'therebetween.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:
1. A pickpocket protector comprising a longitudinal upright bar which has in its "upperportion a vertical slot that is widened-initslupper section, a U-shaped jaw member being pivoted to the lower extremity of said bar, a rod-having a hook-shaped lower portion which is co-exten 's-ive with the center sectionof =anouter corner zportionwof sadd ljawrmember; said rod being vertically xslidable on said bar; and an I-s'haped member rotatably secured'to the upper end of said rod having its'web p'or-tion extendedthroug-h the slot 'in' said' b'an said web portion being rightangular'incros's" section, lthe widened uppe'r :section l-of said slot Joeing wider than said Web por- "tionwhile the main andlow'er se'ctions of 'said slcrc are of a lesserwidth than said web portion, and zthe upper extremity o'fisaid-barbeing adaptiedl f engaging a shank' of a safet'y pin.
2:, A nevree or the 'tiaracter ---described comprising a wire member bent to the shape of an inverted U and having a short horizontal web portion and longitudinal flange portions whose lower ends are rolled so as to form a pair of registering loops, a sheet secured to said wire member having one of its extremities rolled back in a closed loop upon itself and extended above the web portion of the wire member and being provided near said web portion with a longitudinal s'lot' which r-iext to saidweb f portion is increased in width, a U-sl'iaifid jaw member whose web portion normally is parallel to the flange portions of said wire member being with the extremity of'pne of its flange portions tiltably attached to the rolled ends of the flange portions *of-"sa id wife-member, a rod slidably mounted on *said flange portion, said rod having a hookmember.
