Claims. 1
This invention relates generally to flues, and more particularly to an adjustable chimney top comprising a hollow generally pyramidal cap, corner posts and side panels, the three main portions being adjustable relatively to adapt the device for use with different size chimneys.
A primary object of this invention is to provide an adjustable chimney top which may be used to fit closely upon chimneys, thus facilitating construction of the element in uniform sizes.
Another salient object of this invention is to provide an adjustable chimney top which may be secured tightly in place without employment of special tools, the different elements being designed for convenient placement on the chimney prior to the final tightening of the elements in place, thus simplifying the work of attaching the device to a chimney.
Another object of this invention is to provide a chimney top which may be used with various types of extensions securable to the upper end of the device.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a chimney top in which no part is very large or awkward to handle and which may be constructed largely from sheet metal.
And a last object to be specifically mentioned is to provide a device of this character which is relatively inexpensive and practicable to manufacture, extremely simple to apply, adjust and maintain, and which will give generally efiicient and durable service. I With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail, particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the device secured in operative position on a chimney;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the assembled device;
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view, taken on the line 3--3 in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the panels;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the corner posts;
Figure 6 is a sectional view of one of the cor- 2 nor posts, the figure being slightly enlarged and taken on the line ii6 in Figure 5; and,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the corner clamps.
Similar characters of reference designate similar or identical parts and portions throughout the specification and throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be noted that the environment wherewith this invention is adapted to be used includes a chimney it which is illustrated as constructed of bricks and mortar, projecting above a portion 52 of a roof.
The instant invention is designed for use with such a chimney and comprises three main portions which will be hereinafter referred to as the cap I Q, corner posts 56, and side panels IS, a plurality of posts it and side panels l8 being provided to correspond with the number of sides of the cap I l. In the drawings the device has been illustrated as having four sides, in conformity with the usual shape of a chimney.
The cap I 4 is i'rusto-pyramidal shape having sloping sides 20 and a flat top plate 22 which has integrally secured thereon the flue connection 24. This flue connection is a short pipe member to which may be secured any desired type of extension device such as devices for improving the draft and the like.
The corner posts are each constructed with a single vertical wall portion 26, an inner obliquely disposed wall portion 28, and a coextensive outer obliquely disposed and parallel wall portion 36, the parallel portions as well as the vertical portions being each right angularly bent as at 32, so that the vertical portions 26 will fit closely on to the corners of the chimney iii, and the upper ends of the parallel portions will fit within the corner portions of the cap M. The two parallel portions are secured together at the corner 32 by welding, some suitable means being provided to space the walls 28 and 31! apart a distance corresponding substantially to the thickness of the material out of which the device is constructed, and more particularly this spacing must be slightly greater than the thickness of the obliquely disposed portions 3 3 of the side panels IS.
The side panels iii are comprised of the above mentioned obliquely disposed portions 3 5 which are trapezoidal in shape with equal base angles, corresponding to the base angles of the cap M. It will be noted that the correct angular in clination of the various walls and panels must be reasonably closely maintained in order that the cap may fit closely upon the posts i5, and that the sides 35 may fit easily within the channels between the parallel walls 28 and 3b of the posts. Each of the side panels is provided with a vertical wall portion 36 corresponding with the vertical portion 25 of the posts.
The cap Hi and each of the panels are provided with brackets 33 and All respectively, these brackets 38 being integrally secured to th sloping sides of the cap so as to register with the brackets 48 secured to the sloping side of each of the side panels, and a bolt and nut 52 are used to adjustably clamp th two brackets 33 and ie together so as to hold the panels in place relative to the cap 26 and the posts it. Each of the vertical walls 35 is provided with similar brackets M, and corner brackets 36, each bent at three points and terminally apertured, are used to coact with the said brackets G and clamping bolts 48 to adjustably hold the side panels in abutting relation with the exterior surfaces of the vertical walls 35 of the posts.
The operation of this invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof, taken in connection with the above recitation of the objects sought to be achieved by this invention, and it will be perfectly clear how th tightening of the draw bolts Q2 and 48 will clamp the device firmly upon the upper end of a chimney. Though there has been shown a particular embodiment of this invention, this application is not limited to this particular embodiment, but it is desired to includ in the'scope of this invention, the construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having described the claimed as new is:
