Description
(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO PIPE CLAMPS
(71) We, SYDDAL ENGINEERING
LIMITED, a British Company, of P. O. Box
No. 5, Palatine Street, Denton, Manchester,
M34 3QM., do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to a pipe repair clamp.
The present invention has been made with a view to providing a simple repair clamp which is easy to use but is robust and effective.
According to the invention there is ro- vided a pipe repair clamp comprising a ex- ible band, a bolt for tightening the band around a pipe, said bolt having an elongate head which extends along one edge of the band and having a shank receivable in a slot extending into the band from the opposite edge thereof, a rigid member releasably located along the outer side of the said opposite edge of the band by positioning means, a bore through the rigid member which bore registers with the slot in the band when the rigid member is in position and said bore being adapted to receive the shank of the bolt.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention a gasket is provided in the band. The gasket may be of known construction and have a coffered surface which in use is in contact with the pipe.
The bolt head is preferably captively held on said band and the rigid member is preferably locatable in its correct position by lugs thereon which are receivable in apertures in said band.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings which shows a pipe repair clamp in perspective and partly dismantled.
Referring to the drawing the pipe repair clamp comprises a flexible band 10 of for example metal of generally rectangular configuration and arcuately shaped so as to bring two opposite edges adjacent one another. One such edge 12 is folded inwardly to form a channel 14. Arms 18 which form the head of a T-shaped bolt 16 are located in the channel 14. An aperture 20 is provided in the channel wall through which the shank 22 of the bolt extends. The dimensions of the bolt and channel 14 are chosen so that the bolt can be pivoted relative to the band.
The opposite edge 24 of the band is also inturned but in this case is folded back upon itself. The part of double thickness thus formed is shaped so as to be externally concave as at 26. A slot 28 for the bolt shank is provided in the concave edge part 26.
A rigid support member 30 having a convex surface 32 substantially corresponding to the concave surface 26 is locatable along the edge 26 and its disposition determined by lugs 34 on the member 30 being received in apertures 36. A bore 38 for the bolt shank extends through the member 30.
A gasket 40 comprising a sheet of resilient material having a coffered surface is disposed in the band.
In use the shank of the bolt is swung out of the slot 28 to enable the band to be placed around a pipe. The bolt shank is then replaced in the slot 28 and member 30 moved into position against part 26 with the bolt shank extending through the bore 38 and the lugs 34 located in the apertures 36.
A nut 42 is then tightened on the bolt in order to tighten the clamp onto the pipe.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A pipe repair clamp comprising a flexible band, a bolt for tightening the band around a pipe, said bolt having an elongate head which extends along one edge of the band and having a shank receivable in a slot extending into the band from the opposite

Claims (5)
1. A pipe repair clamp comprising a flexible band, a bolt for tightening the band around a pipe, said bolt having an elongate head which extends along one edge of the band and having a shank receivable in a slot extending into the band from the opposite edge thereof, a rigid member releasably located along the outer side of the said opposite edge of the band by positioning means, a bore through the rigid member which bore registers with the slot in the band when the rigid member is in position and said bore being adapted to receive the shank of the bolt.
2. A pipe repair clamp as claimed in claim 1, wherein a gasket is provided in the band.
3. A pipe repair clamp as claimed in claim 2, wherein the pipe clamping surface of the gasket if coffered.
4. A pipe repair clamp as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the bolt head is captively held on said band.
5. A pipe repair clamp substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
