Patented Dec. 12, 1950 FURNACE CONSTRUCTION Richard C. Wright, Bay Village, Ohio, assignor to Iron Fireman Manufacturing Company, Portland, Oreg.
Application November 24, 1944, Serial No. 564,909
9 Claims.
This invention relates generally to furnaces for burning solid fuel and particularly to a sloping ling grate therefor by means of which the ashes may be removed from the grates and permitted tocool without discharging quantities of steam fumes and dust into the boiler room and in which 'special provision is made for obtaining the maximum holding capacity for ashes and for protecting the front of the furnace against radiant heat just below the fire door opening.
I accomplish this and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specication as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: Y
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a fuel injector and its associated parts.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through a portion of the furnace front showing the front protecting grate.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section along `the line 5-5 in Fig. 3.
Fig; 6 is a fragmentary view showing a modied form of ash dumping edge over which ashes are discharged into the ash pit.
Similar numerals refer throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing there is shown a furnace front Ill whose lowermost portion l Ijslopes outwardly to provide increased ash holding capacity which is further increased by the formation of a pit I2 whose sloping bottom to similar parts I3 `extends upwardly to theash pit door I4. The
position of the grates i 5 is indicated and the section |'6 of refractory material constitutes the dumping. edge over which the ashes are raked into the pit l2. The section I6 is supported by 'means of the structural bars I'I and I8 and -by the wall I9, preferably provided with the closures .A which seal the openings 2| through which rid- "'dlings can be drawn along the floor 22 into the Dit I2.
Slightly below the level of the top surface 23 of thesection I6 is an angle bar 24 which is welded to the front I0. The front protecting grates 25 have the rounded face 26 andthe for- Wardly turned horizontal portion 2l whose tip 28 is downturned to hook behind the angle 24 while the rearward side 29 is tangent to the rounded portion 26 and terminates in a horizontal point 3.0 which. engages the furnace front I0. A rib (Cl. 11G-165) 2 3| stifens the member 29 and acts as a stop against the angle 24.
In Fig. 6 it will be seen that instead of using the refractory element I5, there is provided a hook grate 32 whose front protecting hook 33 engages the channel 34 of a corresponding member 35, the details of which are set forth in my copending application, Serial Number 552,720, led Sept. 5, 1944, now Patent 2,411,918, December 3, 1946. The function of the members 32 and I 5 are identical, it being understood that the opening 36 between the members I6 or 32 and the member 25 is sufciently large to permit the dump-ing of ashes into the pit I2.
It will be understood that the sloping front Il is provided with an opening 31 at each ash removal point, around which opening is placed a door frame 38 upon which is hinged an ash door 39 provided with the hinges 49 and handle 4l. Owing to the extreme slope of the door 39, it is `either held firmly closed or just as rmly opened by gravity.
The furnace illustrated is provided with a'fuel `injection nozzle 42 which occupies the opening 43 in the refractory front 44. The details thereof will not be described herein as they form no part of the present invention except that it will be understood that fuel is discharged therefrom onto the grates I5.
It will be understood that in some cases the pit I2 may be omitted and in other cases the degree of slope of the member 3l may be varied in either direction to increase or decrease the additional space acquired by such slope, and that in some cases it may be found desirable to make the wall Il vertical, provided it is an extension from the front I9, in order to provide the necessary additional amount of ash space. Directly above the pit I2 is formed an uprightor vertical opening 45 in the refractory front 44. The furnace front I0 has formed therein a re tending opening 46 which is covered by a lire tending door 41 provided with a refractory guard 48.
I claim:
l. A furnace construction consisting of a refractory wall having a furnace front disposed in front of same, said front having lire andV ash pit doors mounted therein, a horizontal grate on a level with the bottom of the re door extending to the inner side of the refractory wall and spaced from the interior of the furnace front to afford a passageway for ashes into the space behind said ash pit door and a closure for the space between said horizontal grate and the floor beneath said grate. the space between said cio.
