2 Claims.
The present invention has to. do withv conductor cable terminals and connectorsand has more specific reference to a novel and practicalclamp for connecting the conductor cable. to the post of a. conventional storage, battery.
More specifically, the invention 'appertainsto a structurepossessed of simplicity and features of refinement such as render the means, as a whole, more aptly fitted and satisfactory to serve the requirements of manufacturers and users.
All wh have had to attach and detach cable clamps are aware of the difiiculties and distress encountered and it is the purpose of the instant invention to provide a simple and economical clamp which is complete without being complex and is structurally designed to enable it to be attached and detached without requiring the use of special tools and implements. 1
In carrying out the principles of the present invention I provide a storage battery post clamp or terminal which is characterized by four simple parts, the post clamp, the cable terminal, the connecting bolt between the clamp and terminal, and a handle equipped nut for maintaining the parts assembled and readily disconnectible if and when necessary.
Stated somewhat more explicitly the invention is characterized by the aforementioned complemental parts, the clamp having a lug and the terminal having .9, lug, the two lugs being overlapped and keyed together and said lugs being bifurcated to expedite the step of assembling and disassembling.
Other objects, features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanyin illustrative drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the essential parts, the clamp and terminal with the bolt and nut means removed.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the complete assemblage, all parts being shown operatively connected, a portion of the terminal being broken away to uncover and show the bolt.
Figure 3 is an end view of Figure 2 observing same in the direction from right to left.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the clamp.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the cable terminal inverted.
Referring now to the drawings by distinguishing reference numerals the post clamp, as a unitary device, is denoted by the numeral 1 in Figure 4 and comprises a single casting or equivalent structure including a split collar 8 which is adapted to embrace the battery post (not shown), said collar having outstanding prongs. B whichare apertured to. accommodate a clamping bolt (not shown)- One side of the collar is. flattened as at l0- and extending outwardly from this is 2. lug H which. is bifurcated, the furcations being denoted by the numerals I2. Incidentally, the upper part or the. flat surface ill. provides an. abutment shoulder at. l3.
The complemental cable terminal unit is-denoted by the numeral I4-and is also a single casting or equivalent body and includes a. Socket l5 to accommodate thecable (not shown) and further includes a flattened end portion [6 and ail-outstanding lug H- .which overlapsandeorre sponds to the lug H. The lug I1 is also bifurcated and the furcations are denoted by the numerals 8. The longitudinal edge portions of the furcations carry reinforcing flanges [9 which straddle and abut the longitudinal edge portions of the lug ll. Thus, by providing flanges the lug I1 is formed with a keyway and the lug ll becomes a key and fits firmly into the keyway. The tip ends of the furcations l8 rest firmly against the shoulder I 3. The flat surface It of the socket [5 provides a shoulder which rests firmly against the tip ends of the furcations l2. all as shown in Figure 2. The assembling bolt is denoted by the numeral 20 and passes through the notches provided between the furcations and is held in place by a ring nut 2| which is fitted on the threaded end and which is provided with a suitable hand-grip 22. The nut means is denoted as a unit by the numeral 23.
In practice the socket equipped fitting or terminal I4 is secured to the cable (not shown). The split clamp or collar 8 is fitted over the bottom post (not shown) and bolted in place in the usual way. Then, the respective lugs II and I! are fitted together so that the coacting shoulders abut and so that said lugs are properly keyed and firmly fitted together. No special tools are required since the nut means 23 makes it possible to bind the lugs together or separate same whenever necessary or desired.
Changes in shape, size, materials and rearrangement of details and parts may be resorted to in actual practice, so long as they do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims, as is well understood.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A battery post clamp construction of the class described comprising a split clamp adapted to embrace a. post, said clamp being provided midway of its top and bottom surface with an outstanding bifurcated rectangular lug adapted to accommodate the passage of a clampin and assembling bolt, the outer peripheral surfaces above and below said lug being flattened, a cable terminal comprising a, socket attachable to the cable, said socket being provided with an outstanding lug, said lug being also rectangular and superimposed upon the first named lug and being bifurcated, the coacting bifurcated portions of the lugs being oppositely directed and providing a passage for a, clamping and assembling bolt, a bolt passin through said passage, a nut on the threaded end of said bolt, and a finger-piece attached to said nut, and the tip ends of the furctions of said second lug being fiat and resting in firm contact with the coacting fiat surface on said clamp.
2. A battery post clamp of the class shown and described comprising a split collar constituting a clamp and adapted to embrace a battery post, said collar having outstanding connectable prongs on one side, the diametrically opposite side being flattened and provided with an outstanding rectangular bifurcated lug, said lug being situated midway between the top and bottom surfaces of the collar, the outer tip ends of said furcations bein flat, a cable terminal socket attachable to a cable, said socket being provided on its anchorable side with a flat surface providing abutment means for the flat tip ends of said furcations and being further provided on the same side with an outstanding rectangular lug corresponding in length with the first named lug, the free tip end of the furcations of the sec- 0nd lug firmly abutting the adjacent fiat surface on said collar above said first named lug, the second named lug having its under side grooved and defining a keyway and longitudinal keying ribs, the first named lug fitting into the keyway and being confined in place by the complemental retentive keying ribs, the coacting bifurcated portions of the lugs being oppositely directed and providin a passage for a clamping and assembling bolt, a bolt passing through said passage, a nut carried by the screw-threaded end of said bolt, and a finger piece attached to said nut.
