1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a terminal and more particularly to a terminal especially adapted to be removably secured to the post of a battery.
One of the objects of the present invention is 5 to provide a terminal of this character which is so constructed that it may be easily inserted on and removed from the battery post.
A still further important object'of the invention is to provide a terminal of this character 10' which, while being easily removed, is so constructed that it forms a positive and secure electrical connection on the binding post of the battery. In the accompanying drawing, wherein for the 16 purpose of illustration there is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention and in which like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front elevationalview of a portion 20 of a battery showing the terminal in position on the battery post,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Figure 1 taken on line 3-4 thereof,
25 Figure 4 is a perspective view of the terminal,
and
clamping members of the terminal.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration there is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the reference numeral 6 generally designates a battery which may be of any construction or size and which is provided with the usual tapered binding post 6; To 35 this binding post in the usual manner there is adapted to be secured an electrical terminal which forms the subject matter of the presentv to pressure contact the outer peripheries of the 50 post 8 and securely hold or maintain the terminal in electrical contacting positionthereon. Each of the clamps i0 and I2 are provided with transversely extending bores therein which receive the night portions of a rectangular shaped connect- 55 ing link 20'. Thus, it will 'beobserved that the Figure is a perspective view of one of the clamps Ill and I2 are pivotally connected by means of the rectangular shaped connecting link 20 to the end that upon relative movement of the clamping members l0 and I2 the space between the inner surfaces of the clamping ribs I8 may be 5 varied depending upon the shape and size of the binding post.
The clamping member i2 is provided with an outward integral tubular extension 22 which rereives, as shown, the conduit 26 electrically connecting the clamp l2 to the conduit. Projecting from the other end of the clamp l2 on the upper side of the clamp toward the clamp I0 is an extension 24 which is provided with a-screw threaded aperture therein adapted to receive a screw threaded plug26; It will be observed that the position of the plug 26 is substantially central of the space between the opposite] disposed inner surfaces of the clamps l0 and 2 to the end, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1, that the inner free end of the plug 26 is adapted to contact the upper end of the post 8.
Thus, as shown in Figure 1, the inner surface of'the clamp I0 is disposed on one side of the post 8 and the inner surface of the clamp l2 on 25 .the other side thereof, whereupon the clamps are forced downwardly until the ridges l8 pressure .contact the outer periphery of the post and upon a subsequent turning of the plug 26 and the contacting of the same against the upper sur- 60 face of the post 8 the clamp is firmly secured in 1 electrical contacting engagement on the post 8. When it is desired to remove the terminal from thepost 8 it is only necessary to raise. or urge one of the clamps upwardly, thereby increasing, by virtue of the link connection, the space between, the ridges of the clamp enabling the terminal to be easily removed from the post.
' While there is shown for the purpose of illustration a preferred embodiment of the invention 40 it is to be understood that it is capable of various changes "and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and it is intended, therefore, that only such limitations shall be imposed thereon as are indicated in the prior art. I
What is claimed is:
A battery terminal of the class described comprising a pair of clamping members, the inner oppositely disposed surfaces of said clamping 0 members being provided with an outwardly projecting ridge thereon, each of said clamping members having, atransversely extending bore therein, a substantially rectangular shaped link having the bight portions thereof extending through 5 Jaw said bores and pivotally connecting said clamping members, means for connecting an electrical conduit to one of said clamping members, one of said clamping members being provided with a lateral extension extending toward the other clamping member and being provided with a screw thread-
