COMBINATION BATTERY CLAMP AND CABLE CONNEOTER.
Application filed May 16', 1927. Serial No. 191,716. Renewed November 23, 1928.
This invention relates to a combination battery clamp and cable connector.
Objects of this invention are to provide a novel form of connection between the battery terminal and the cable, such, for example, as found on auto-n'iobiles,-so that the cable may be quickly detached from the battery without requiring the loosening of any bolts or nuts and may be quickly reconnected with the battery with assurance that a positive, firm, and reliable mechanical and electrical connection has been attained.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device;
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section;
Figure 3 is an end View of the cable plug.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the device comprises a terminal clamp 1 rovided with an aperture 2 for the reception of the battery terminal. This clamp is provided with a pair of spaced ears 3 apertured for the reception of the clamping bolt 4. It is to be noted that one of the cars is provided with a rib 5 which contacts with one of the faces of the bolt head, as shown most clearly in Figure 2 and thus prevents rotation of the bolt. The threaded end of the bolt, of course, receives the clamping nut 6, as shown in Figure 1, so that the device may be tightly clamped about the terminal of the battery. It is to be noted also, particularly from Figure 2, that the outer end of the clamp is provided with a cylindrical aperture 7 and with a bayonet slot 8, as shown most clearly in Figures 1 and 2.
The cable 9 has its bared end 10 inserted within the cylindrical recess 11 of a connecter plug 12. This bared end is sweated or otherwise secured within the plug, so that the plug forms a continuation of the cable. The normally exposed surface of the plug 12 is knurled, as shown in Figure 1, to provide a roughened gripping surface for the hand of the operator. The outer end of the plug has a hole 18 bored axially therein and is provided with a plurality of saw cuts 14 to form a plurality of spaced lips 15. These spaced lips are either sprung outwardly slightly to bind against the inner face of the cylindrical aperture 7 of the clamp or else the plug is made slightly larger than the clamp to secure this binding effect. It is to be noted also that the extreme end of the plug is tapered or conical, as indicated at 16 in Figure 2. Further, the plug is provided with a radial pin 17 which fits within the bayonet slot 8 and thus locks the plug in place.
In using the device, it is a simple matter to clamp the member 1 rigidly upon the battery terminal and thereafter leave such membcr permanently. aflixed to such terminal. The cable is connected to the clamp by merely inserting the plug and giving it a part turn, the knurled surface 12 furnishing an adequate gripping surface for the hand of the operator.
It will be seen, therefore, that the device is capable of ready attachment and detachment without requiring the use of a wrench or other tool, and further, it will be seen that a firm and reliable electrical connection is established between the springy lips of the end of the plug and the clamp.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, such description is intended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and as the scope of such invention is to be deter mined as claimed.
I claim:
1. A combined battery clamp and cable connector comprising a clamp adapted to engage a battery terminal, a bolt carried by said clamp for binding the clamp around said terminal, said clamp having a projecting portion provided with a cylindrical recess, a cable receiving plug provided with a cylindrical portion adapted for insertion into said recess, said cylindrical portion having a plurality of resilient ears at its free end for engaging the inner surface of said aperture and having a radially projecting pin, said clamp having a bayonet slot for the reception of said pin.
2. A combined battery clamp and cable connecter comprising a clamp adapted to receive the battery terminal and having a pair of spaced ears, a clamping bolt passing through said ears, a rib formed on said clamp for engaging the head of said bolt and preventing rotation thereof, said clamp having a projecting portion provided With a cylindrical recess, a plug having a cylindrical portion adapted for insertion into said recess and having spring arms formed in said cylindrical portion said plug having a recessed end for the reception of a cable, a radially extending pin carried by said plug, said clamp having a bayonet slot for the reception of said )in for tem )oraril loclzi'n said plug in engagement With said clamp.
