Description
G. F; norm. FUSE FULLER. APPLICATION FILED'MAYZI Patented Jan. 24, 1922,
GEORGE E. Romczor .nrLwa-uxnn, WISCONSIN, AssfGNon 'ro GEORGE E. norm mmmc CQIIANN,$01,MILWAUKEETWISCONSIN, A conrona'rrolv or WISCONSIN,
To allwhomit mg concern: 1
v:Be it known/that -:I, GEORGE F. :ROHN, a citizen of the United States, and'resident of l\Iilwaukee,.county of Milwaukee, and State of \Visconsin, have invented newand useful improvements' in -rFuse Pullers,'-ofwhich the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which area part ofithisPspecification. V
The-invention relatesito a device for pulling or removing cartridge afuses fromthe terminals with which they are connected.
The object of the invention isto provide a fuse puller which prevents ior obviates any danger'ofthe operatorarecei-ving a shock in removing or replacing the fuse-,the device being readily removable from the fuse so that it may be used when desired on different fuses. V
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig.1 is a side View of the device embodying the invention,- parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with the clip shown in full and the body broken away; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the device removed from the fuse.
In the drawings, the numeral 4 designates a cartridge or refillable fuse of usual construction having blade contacts 5 at its ends insertable between the parts of the usual fixed terminals 6. As usually made these fuses have a cylindrical shell 7 of the fibre or other suitable insulating material and metal ferrules or caps 8, the fuse link being disposed within the shell and connected to the blades. The caps 8 are of metal and connect with the blades.
In removing or replacing a fuse, if through ignorance or carelessness the operator grasps the fuse so as to short circuit the current through him he will receive a shock or burn which, of course, is more dangerous the greater the voltage. To prevent such an occurrence I have provided a handle 10 of insulating material which is adapted to be clamped to the fuse so that it may be readily removed therefrom. This handle extends the full length of the fuse barrel and also preferably projects out over the FUSE PULLER.

vblades so-that the operator shand cannot come in contact with any of the metal parts of the fuse.
The handle member 10 is provided with recesses 11 receiving the upper ends of .cla'mpingmembers 12 having clamping jaws 13. The members .12 are formed from relaii'e'ly stiff metal strips and have curved ends-14 and. tapertoa flat base 15 provided with'an opening to receive a'clamping bolt 16 which passes upwardly through an aperture 1.7 in the handle and carries a clamping nut 18 whichxmay be entirely of insulating material but is preferablyprovided with a threaded metal sleeve 19 and the insulated exterior has afluted beveled side 18"to per- ":mit ready turning of the nut. While these members 12 might be used alone to clamp the handle to the fuse, it is preferred to use metal clips 20 of more resilient metal in conjunction therewith. Each clip 20 is 7 formed from thin metal strips and has its spreading of the clips when they are forced over the fuse.
The handle is reinforced at the points of greatest strain imposed by the clamping means by means of metal plates 26 having openings 27 therein within which the clamping members are free to move.
The handle member is provided with a recessed portion 28 to permit ready circulation of air around the fuse barrel and with a sight opening 29 to permit ready inspection of the capacity indicator 80.
In Fig. 4: I have shown the position the clamp is in at the time the handle is to be placed onto the fuse, the nut 18 being loosened so that the jaws 13 will pass freely over the fuse and also permit the clip 20 to be sprung over the fuse. With the parts in this position the handle is moved down onto the fuse and the nut 18 is then turned on the bolt 16 which thereby draws the member 12 and the clip 20 up into the recess 11 in the. handle and in doing so causes the ends of the jaws 13 to press inwardly against the firm clampingengagement with the use so that the fuse may be readily withdrawn from the fixed terminals by grasping the handle and moving it in the proper, direcinsulating material, a clip member having tion.
I have shown two sets of clamping means associated with thefhandlebut'for smaller fuses a single set engagingthe central portion of the fuse may be employed, particu-' la'rly 'such' limitations are specified in the claims.
\Vhat I claim as my inventionis:
1:. A fuse puller, comprising ahandle of insulating material, means for attaching the handle to'the fuse including a clip having resilient jaws engaging the cylindrical p'ortion of the fuse, and means distinct from said jaws for pressing and maintaining them in clamping-engagement with the fuse.
' 2: A'fuse puller, comprising a handleof. 'insulatingmaterial, a clip membercarried by said handle and having'resilient jaws 1 adapted to be pressed the use to part lyv surrqunql tha me, c umeans d s ct 1d jaws for securing them inengage- 3 A fuse puller, conrpris iiig' a handle of resilient j aws engageable with the fuseyand a clamp for saidjaws carried bythe'handle.
4.;The; combination, of a handle of in-.
sulating material for a refillable fuse, aclip; member engageable with the fuse, aclip clamp carried by the handle, the ends of said clip' member and clip clamp being mounted ;within' the hand le', a clamping bolt connected to both memberS and a clamping nut i for] moving the bolt to actuate the-gc'lip V clamppl 5; The combination lot. a handle insu lating material: for: a refillable fuse, having recesses therein, clip members engageable -withthe fuse and having portions disposed in said recesses, clip clampshaving aportion disposed inf said recesses, a metal/reinfqrcementfor v the edges of I each recess, and means for actuatingtheclip clamps: 1
