Description

NOV. 21, 1950 JOHNSON 2,530,968
APPARATUS FOR MAKING WRENCH NUTS Filed June 26, 1947 INVENTOR.
Patented Nov. 21, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFECE APPARATUS FOR MAKING WRENCH NUTS Application June 26, 1947, Serial No. 757,115
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for making wrench nuts so-called. That is, nuts having flat sides such as are used in connection with wrenches, pliers and the like.
The principal objects of the invention are the provision of simple and efficient means for forming nuts having flat substantially parallel sides, and as special features of the invention, the apparatus is easy to operate and provides nuts which are uniform in all important characteristics.
With the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as willbecome more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and. more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of apparatus embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of a nut blank and r a nut, respectively, completed in accordance with the invention; 7
Figs. 5 and. 6 are edge views of the nuts shown in Figs. 3 and 4; and
Figs. '7 and 8 are plan and side elevational views respectively of a nut holder forming a part of the invention. g
Referring now to thedrawings more in detail, the invention willbe fully described.
A carrier is provided which is represented in part by 2 and may consist of a plurality of links pivoted as at 6 to form a continuous chain which may be supported in the normal way as by passing around spaced supporting and driving sprockets.
Holders 8 are provided which have longitudinal extending central bosses it. These bosses are provided intermediate the ends thereof with recesses or sockets l2 and the bottoms M of said sockets are disposed in planes slightly above the planes it of the upper sides of the holders adjacent the longitudinal portions iii.
A nut blank it is shown in Figs. 3 and 5 and such blanks are receivable in the sockets of the holders. The portions It of the holders are of less width than the diameter of the nut blanks 18 as is indicated in Fig. '7, so that opposite marginal portions of the blanks project outwardly beyond the sides of the holder portions to.
With the :carrier links arranged for movement 1 Claim. (CI. 82)
2 in a certain direction and have the holders associated therewith, blanks are inserted by any convenient and suitable means in the sockets of the holders.
A bracket 20 is secured to a support 22 and it has a longitudinal slot 24 therein. A plate 26 overlies the bracket 20 and is secured thereto in such a manner as to close the forward open side of the slot.
A hold-down device 28 is disposed in the slot 24 of the bracket and is pivoted at 30. A screw 32 is in threaded engagement with the bracket so that its inner end extends into the slot thereof and a spring dd therearound is disposed in a socket 36 provided in the inner end of the hold-down device 28 so as to urge the hold-down device 28 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 1.
The outer or left hand end of the hold-down device is provided with a foot portion 38.
The carrier support and bracket are s relativel positioned that as the carrier moves in the direction of arrow A, the foot 38 engages the upper sides of the nut blanks to hold them in the sockets of the holders, the spring 34 tensioning the holddown device, whereby the nut blanks are yieldingly held in their sockets.
Cutters 4i] rotatable b means of an arbor 42 are disposed to straddle the nut blanks and act thereon as the carrier moves the blanks past or through the cutters.
As the blanks are moved through or between the cutters, the cutters act on opposite sides of the blank to remove portions thereof and provide flat sides 44 as shown in Figs. 4 and 6.
Thus, nut blanks carried in the sockets of the holders of the carrier are successively acted upon by movement of the chain or other carrier so as to provide the flat opposite sides, the hold-down device functioning to yieldingly hold the blanks in position in the sockets for the action of the cutters.
The cutters may take any ordinary form best suited for the particular work at hand and they may be operated at such a speed as will efiiciently and economically provide the flat sided nuts.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and. not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meanin and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
Apparatus for removing opposite sides of nut blanks projecting from opposite sides of blank holders comprising in combination, a support having a pair of axially spaced cutters rotatable on a horizontal axis therein for operating on opposite sides of nut blanks, a bracket secured to said support at one side of said cutters and extending away therefrom, said bracket provided with an elongated slot in' a forward face and disposed transversely. relative to the axis of rotation of said cutters, an elongated'plate secured to the forward face of said bracket and closing said slot, a hold-down disposed in said slot and pivotal connections between said bracket and hold-down for swinging of said hold-down up and down in opposite directions, one end portion'of said hold down extending from one end of said slot and bracket disposed between said cutters extending below the axis of rotation REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
