Description

APPLICATION FILED NOV. 9, I920.
PatentedSept Patented Sept. 19, 1922.
JOHN M GHEE, 0F GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
COMBINED NUT AND PIPE wnnnon.
Application filed. Ma a 9; 192a Serial No. 422,929.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN MoGHnn, of Morrison Villa, Tollcross, Glasgow, Scotland, engine fitter, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Nut and Pipe Wrench (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain, No. 27502, November 7 1919), of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved combined nut wrench and pipe wrench and has for its object to provide one of a cheap, simple, and efiicient nature.
In carrying out my invention, I provide anordinary monkey wrench or nut wrench having its usual sliding jaw which works up and down in the casing, which casing carries integrally as one jaw the lower jaw of the nut wrench and the upper jaw of the pipe wrench. To this casing the shank of the lower jaw of the pipe wrench is pivoted by a pin passing through a hole in the shank and a hole or slot in the casing. When used as a pipe wrench the under side of the lower jaw of the nut wrench and the pivoted lower jaw of the pipe wrench are caused to grip the pipe or other round article by the operation of the handle of said shank.
In order that my invention may be properly understood and readily carried into effect, I have hereunto appended one sheet of drawings, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined nut wrench and pipe wrench, constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, at right angles to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a detail elevation df the same in use; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a modification.
The fixed jaw 1 and straight shank 2 are of the usual construction in a nut wrench, and said shank is provided on the rear side with worm rack teeth 3. The sliding jaw B has the usual casing which is arranged to slide on the shank 2, and in the said casing is mounted a worm F which engages the worm teeth 3 and hence permits the jaw B to be adjusted. Said jaw B forms the lower jaw of the nut wrench, and the upper jaw of the pipe wrench, in accordance with my invention, and is serrated at H as shown.
The lower jaw of the pi e wrench comprises a pair of members which are arranged onopposite sides of the'casing and are connected together by and are inte al with a channeled shank A, the sides of which are spaced from opposite sides of the shank 2, as shown in Fig. 2. Said jaw members G are pivotally connected to the casing of the jaw B by a pivot bolt C which may be arranged in either one of a series of openings D with which the casing is provided, and hence the pipe wrench jaw members Gr may be adjusted toward or from the jaw B, as may be required by the diameter of the pipe or other work to be engaged. Said jaw members G are connected by a spacer K, and are serrated at H on the edges which are opposed to the jaw B, as shown.
When used as a pipe wrench, the under side of the lower jaw of the nut Wrench and the pivoted lower jaw of the pipe wrench, are caused to grig the pipe or other article, as indicated at Fig. 1, by the operation of the shank A, said shank and the shank 2 being grasped by the.
user, as will be understood. By adjusting the jaw B toward or from the jaw '1, by means of the worm F and worm teeth 3, a
nut may be grasped and held between the jaws 1 and B as shown at O in Fig. 3, or at L in Fig. 4:.
Fig. l illustrates a slightly modified construction, in which the adjusting worm F is in the same side of the casing as the jaw B and the worm teeth 3 are on the front side of the shank 2 and in which the pivotC is arranged in a slot N instead of a series of holes.
in Fig. 3, and at M in- Having thus described my invent-ion, I I
claim 1. A combined nut wrench and pipe wrench, comprising a shank, a fixed jaw thereon, a sliding jaw, means to adjust the sliding jaw with reference to the fixed jaw, said sliding jaw forming the lower jaw of the nut wrench and also the upper jaw of the pipe wrench, and a third jaw pivotally connected to the sliding jaw and also having an operating shank, saidthird jaw forming the lower jaw of the pipe wrench.
2. A combined nut wrench and pipe wrench, comprising a shank, a fixed jaw thereon, a sliding jaw, means to adjust the sliding jaw with reference to the fixed jaw, said sliding jaw forming the lower jaw of the nut wrench and also the upper jaw of the pipe wrench, and a third jaw pivotally and adjustably connected to the sliding jaw and also having an operating shank, said third jaw forming the lower jaw of the pipe wrench.
3. A combined nut wrench and pipe wrench, comprising a shank, a fixed jaw thereon, a. sliding jaw, means to adjust the sliding jaw with reference to the fixed jaw, said sliding jaw forming the lower jaw of the nut wrench and also the upper jaw of 10 the pipe wrench, and a third jaw pivotally connected to the sliding jaw and also having an operating shank, said third jaw forming the lower jaw of the pipe wrench, and comprising a pair of members spaced from opposite sides of said first-named shank, and said second-named shank being of channel form.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature JOHN MOGHEE.
