-A suitable-collarEll-secured as by a set screw- 6| to -the-outer extremity-of-bolt55 precludes the possibility 1 of completely; unthreading the nut 45 therefrom, unless the collar 'is removed.
A tension spring 62 is threadedly engaged with threaded portion 50 of extending part 49 of nut 45 and has its opposite end secured in recess 26 of lug 25 of member l3. Thus it will be seen that the spring 62 biases the members [3 and I4 toward each other, the extent of such biasing being limited by the stops I1 and I8, and the tension exerted by the spring 62 being regulated by the position of nut 45 within the housing 3!].
The outer extremities of members l3 and I4 have positioned thereon identical members 65 and 66 oppositely disposed thereto. 66 are glass cutter holders and, as shown in Figure 6, each provided with a transverse bore 61 through which set screws 68 are adapted to extend to engage suitable recesses or depressions in the extremities of members l3 and [4 to hold the parts securely in related assembly. Members 65 and 66 are also provided with additional bores preferably of rectangular cross-sectional configuration within which are adapted to be positioned conventional hand glass cutters or scoring members H, the same being secured in position as by set screws 12 extending into the bores 10. From the foregoing it will now be seen that when it is desired to score opposite sides of a piece of glass for cutting, the handles l9 and 20 are pressed together separating the cutting edges of the cutters H and the device positioned over the pane of glass to be out. When the handles are released the tension of the spring 62 causes the cutting edges to bear tightly against the opposite surfaces of the pane of glass, and the device may be guided in any desired pattern by means of the handles to produce any desired score line on opposite surfaces of the pane of glass.
Under certain conditions, as when it is desired to cut a line a relatively great distance from the edge of the plate of glass the length of members l3 and 14 may be insuflicient to permit the cutters H to be so extended. Under such conditions an extension generally indicated at 15 (see Figure 8) is utilized. Extension 15 is comprised of a rod or shaft 16 of any suitable length and has secured to one end thereof as by welding or the like, a sleeve H of a diameter adapted to surround members I3 and I4, and is provided with set screws 18 engaging suitable threaded recesses therein. Depressions or detents 80 are provided adjacent the opposite end of rod 76 positioned to receive the ends of set screws 68. The manner of use of extension 15 should now be obvious, set screws 68 being released and members 65 and 66 being removed from extending portions [3 and I4. Sleeves 11 are then placed in position over the end members I3 and M, the set screws 18 tightened, and members 65 and 65 positioned on the opposite ends of rods 16 and held in position by set screws 68. Thus it will be seen that the length .of arms i3 and I4 may be effectively extended to any desired position to perform a cutting operation on any desired size and sheet of glass at any desired distance from the edge.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a device accomplishing all of the objects of this invention and others including many advantages of great practical utility.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore described and shown in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Members 65 and Iclaim:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a pair of extending members, means securing said members in pivotal relation, glass cutting means carried at the extremities of said members, a housing carried by one of said members, a movable nut in said housing, a tension spring having one end secured to said nut, and the other end to the other of said members, and means for moving said nut in said housing to vary the tension exerted by said spring.
2. A glass cutting and scoring tool composed of a pair of pivoted jaws, handle means for operatlng said jaws and disposed on the opposite side of the pivot therefrom, glass cutting means secured to the adjacent extremities of said jaws, spring means for biasing said jaws together, a guide upon one jaw, a follower movable in said guide, said sprin means being secured to said follower and to the other jaw, and means including an adjusting rod, rotatably and nonreciprocatingly mounted in said guide for moving said follower in said guide to adjustably tension said spring.
3. A glass cutting and scoring tool composed of a pair of pivoted jaws, handle means for operating said jaws and disposed on the opopsite side of the pivot therefrom, glass cutting means secured to the adjacent extremities of said jaws, spring means for biasing said jaws together, a guide upon one jaw, a follower movable in said guide, said spring means being secured to said follower and to the other jaw, and means including an adjusting rod, rotatably and nonreciprocatingly mounted in said guide for moving said follower in said guide to adjustably tension said spring, said glass cutting means including a cutter holder carried by each jaw, a glass scoring member supported by each holder and arranged in aligned, opposite arrangement to each other for simultaneously marking opposite surfaces of a glass body interposed therebetween.
4. A glass cutting and scoring tool composed of a pair of pivoted jaws, handle means for operating said jaws and disposed on the opposite side of the pivot therefrom, glass cutting means secured to the adjacent extremities of said jaws, spring means for biasing said jaws together, a guide upon one jaw, a follower movable in said guide, said spring means being secured to said follower and to the other jaw, and means including an adjusting rod, rotatably and nonreciprocatingly mounted in said guide for moving said follower in said guide to adjustably tension said spring, said glass cutting means including a cutter holder carried by each jaw, a glass scoring member supported by each holder and arranged in aligned, opposite arrangement to each other for simultaneously marking opposite surfaces of a glass body interposed therebetween, each holder having a first bore for receiving said extremity and a second bore, perpendicular thereto for receiving said glass scoring member.
5. A glass cutting and scoring tool composed of a pair of pivoted jaws, handle means for operating said jaws and disposed on the opposite side of the pivot therefrom, glass cutting means secured to the adjacent extremities of said jaws, spring means for biasing said jaws together, a guide upon one jaw, a follower movable in said guide, said spring means being secured to said follower and to the other jaw, and means including an adjusting rod, rotatably and nonreciprocatingly mounted in said guide for moving said follower in said guide to adjustably tension said spring, said guide including a housing carried by said one jaw, spaced longitudinal slots in the Wall of said housing comprisin guide openings, said follower consisting of a cylindrical member having spaced lugs engageable and slidable in said guide slots, an axial threaded bore in said follower, said adjusting rod having screw threaded engagement with said bore.
6. A glass cutting and scoring tool composed of a pair of pivoted jaws, handle means for operating said jaws and disposed on the opposite side of the pivot therefrom, glass cutting means secured to the adjacent extremities of said jaws, spring means for biasing said jaws together, a guide upon one jaw, a follower movable in said guide, said spring means being secured to said follower and to the other jaw, and means including an adjusting rod, rotatably and nonreciprocatingly mounted in said guide for moving said follower in said guide to adjustably tension said spring, said glass cutting means including a cutter holder carriedjoy each jaw, a glass scoring member supported by each holder and arranged in aligned, opposite arrangement to each other for simultaneously marking opposite surfaces of a glass body interposed therebetween, said guide including a housing carried by said one jaw, spaced longitudinal slots in the wall of said housing comprising guide openings, said follower consisting of a cylindrical member having spaced lugs engageable and slidable in said guide slots, an axial threaded bore in said follower, said adjusting rod having screw threaded engagement with said bore.
