' BAnnAen CUTTER.
Application filed November 11, 1920. SeriaI No. 423,279.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winthrop, in the county of Shasta and State of California, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Bandage Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a device for cutting a roll of bandage or the like into short rolls of any desired width, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind in which the knife will have a draw cutting operation and in which it is positively forced into contact with the rollof cloth to be cut,
all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the improved bandage roll cutter. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on'line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same, and Fig. 4. is a vertical sectional elevation of the same on line 44;, Fig. '3.
Referring to the drawing, 12 denotes two side plates which may be of skeleton form as shown and which are spaced apart from each other by a curved resistance bar 13 and a spacing bar 14, these plates being attached together by bolts 15 passing through said resistance bar 13 and spacing bar14, thus affording a suitable frame for the device. Pivotally attached to the plates 12 by a bolt 16 is an operating lever 17 to which is attached, by a bolt 18, a tapering curved knife 19 arranged between said plates and which works in contact with the curved resistance bar 18, said knife having a cutting edge 19. Mounted on the plates 12 is a twopart tube 20 having adjacent flanges 21 extending between the plates 12 and between which flanges the cutting knife 19 works. The two-part tube or cylindrical roll holder is secured in place by screws 20 passing through the plates 12 and entering the flanges 21. 1
The tube 20 is preferably provided with a measuring scale 22 adjacent to which is a longitudinal sight opening 23. One of the plates 12 is preferably provided with an 1ntegral flange part 2 1 provided with screw holes 25 by which the device may be attached to a bench or other proper support.
In the operation of thisimproved cutting device a roll of bandage or other like ma- Gnonon E. HAL UMB,

terial to be cut into short rolls will be'in serted in the tube 20, the knife 19 at this time being withdrawn to the position denoted in full lines in Fig. 4:. The roll to be cut is adjusted to any desired position as may be indicated by the scale 22 for the purpose of cutting off a roll of any desired width, the sight opening 23 enabling the operator to see the roll in the tube 20 in adjusting the roll to any desired position according to the desired width of the cut-off roll. The lever 17 is then operated to move the cutting knife from the position denoted in full lines in Fig. 1 to the position denoted in dotted lines in said figure. Inthus moving the lever 17 downward the cutting knife will move in contact with the resistance plate 13 and will be forced upward through the rollof cloth until it has arrived at the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 roll will be fully severed. The cut-off, rolls will be forced outward from the tube 20 as" the roll to becut is moved through the said tube to bring the roll to successive positions for new cutting operations.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the invention provides an improved cutting device in which the tapering and curved cutting knife as it is forced through the roll to be cut will have a draw cutting operation so as to clearly and efliciently sever the roll which is to be cut into smaller rolls without mashing the sanie. Also itwill be under stood that the tube or roll-holder 20 affords a support for the cut-off roll or rolls as the cutting operation progresses.
Having thus lescribed my invention I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a roll cutting device, the combination with a suitable frame provided with means for holding a roll to be cut, of a lever pivoted to said frame, a curved and tapering cutting knife attached to said lever, and a curved resistance bar with which the said knife is in contact as the said lever is moved downward, so that the said knife is caused to be forced upward through the roll of cloth to be cut.
2. In a roll cutting device, the combination with a suitable frame, of a two-part tubular work-holder, a lever pivoted to said frame, a curved and tapering cutting knife attached to said lever and which cutting knife, in the cutting operation, is caused to move across the plane of the said tubular work holder when the and between the two parts thereof, and a curved resistance bar against which said knife bears as the said lever is operated to out a roll of cloth.
3. In roll cutting device, the combination with suitable frame, of a two-part tubular work-holder, a lever pivoted to said frame, a curved and tapering cutting knife attached to said lever and which cutting knife, in the cutting operation, is caused to move across the plane of the said tubular 'work holder and between the two parts thereof, and a curved resistance bar against which said knife bears as the said lever is operated to cut a roll of cloth, the said tubular work holder being provided with a 1011- gitudinal sight opening, and with a measuring scale adjacent said opening.
l. In a roll cutting device, the combination with a suitable frame comprising two plates suitably spaced apart from each other, of spacing means between said plates, bolts passing through said plates and serving to hold said plates together, tubular workholder extending on opposite sides of said plates, a lever pivoted to said frame, a curved and tapering cutting knife attached to said lever and which cutting knife, in the cutting operation, is caused to move between said plates and across the plane of the said tubular work holder, and a curved resistance bar against which said knife works.
5. In a roll cutting device, the combination with a suitable frame comprising two plates suitably spaced apart from each other,
of spacing means between said plates, bolts passing through said plates and serving to hold said plates together, a tubular workholder extending on opposite sides of said plates, a lever pivoted to said frame, a curved and tapering cutting knife attached to said lever and which cutting knife, in the cutting operation, is caused to move between said plates and across the plane of the said tubular work holder, and a curved resistance bar against which said knife works, said workholder consisting of a two-part tube the adjacent ends of the parts of which are provided with flanges attached to said plates and between which flanges the said knife moves in the cutting operation.
6. In a roll cutting device, the combination with a suitable frame comprisingtwo plates suitably spaced apart from each other, of spacing means between said plates, bolts passing through said plates and serving to hold said plates together, a tubular work holder extending on opposite sides of said plates, a lever pivoted to said frame, a curved and tapering cutting nife attached to said lever and which cutting knife, in the cutting operation, is caused to move between said plates and across the plane of the said tu bular work holder, and a curved resistance bar against which said knife works, the said tubular work-holder being provided with a longitudinal sight opening and with a measuring scale adjacent said opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE E. HA LCUMB.
