SALOMON DAVIDSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,013, dated January 31, 1882.
Application filed NovemberQS, 1881. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SALOMON DAVIDSON,"Of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chains, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to links of ornamental chains, which have heretofore been made by the combination of interlaced rings or loops covered by tubing and bands of ornamental character, the general object of such construction being to dispense with the use of solder for connecting the parts.
My invention consists in a cap or band applied as a finish or ornament to the ends of the links and retained in place by a shoulder on the cap, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, which show my invention as applied to links of various forms.
In Figures 1, 2, and 3, a a are rings connected by the oval rings or loops 1), around which are the ornamental tubes or sleeves 0, provided at their ends with the caps or hands d,constitutingmyinvention. The capsor bands (I are cup-shaped or formed with shoulders 0, taking upon the ends ofthe sleeves or tubes 0, as in Figs. 1 and 3, or against the loop I), as shown in Fig. 2. In either case the caps are held down by the rings a a, and the shoulder prevents the cap from slipping down upon the tubing, so that they are retained securely in place without solder.
The caps or bands (I may be of any suitable ornamental form and give a finish to the ends of the links and an appearance of solidity. As desired, they may be in open-work or else closed, as in Fig. 10, and are adapted for application to a grcatvarietyof ornamental links.
In Fig. 1 the tube or sleeve 0 is cylindrical, in Fig. 2 it is square to form abox-link. and in Fig. 3 there are two sleeves, 0, separated by a transverse ring, f, and the caps d are applied to both ends of each sleeve.
In Fig. 4 the sleeve 0 is surrounded by a spiral, g, and the caps cl applied on the ends of the spiral.
In Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 the connecting rings or loops 1) are upon the outside and cover ornamental filling-pieces h, and the caps are ap plied around the ends of loops 1).
In Fig. 9 the caps are also applied over the ends of the loops, and in that case the caps are apertured for the rings a a to pass.
Fig. 10 is a view of one of the caps, partly in section.
It will thus be seen that the invention is applicable to a great variety of links, and in all cases the caps are held in place securely.
I am aware that bands or rings have beenapplied around the links of'chain; but unless soldered they are liable to become misplaced.
Havingthus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In ornamental chains, the caps or hands (1, formed with internal shoulders, combined with the end rings, a a, and connecting loop or rings b of the links, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the shouldered cap or band d with the link a a band sleeve 0, substantially is shown and described.
SALOMON DAVIDSON.
