1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to toys of the figured type and particularly to toys having movable parts actuated by mechanism caused to operate as the toy is pulled over a surface, thereby simulating the movements of living animals.
An important object of the invention is to provide a figured mechanical toy wherein the movable parts are operated with comparatively few operating arms, gears, or the like, thereby reducing the cost of the manufacture of the toy to a minimum.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred forms of the invention have been shown.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation view of a figured toy, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. illustrating the head of the figured toy as moved rearwardly with the movable jaw in its upper-most position.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view illustrating the head of the figure as tilted forwardly, with the movable jaw moved to its open position.
Referring to the drawings in detail the reference character 5 indicates the body of the toy, which in the present showing has been constructed to simulate a duck.
The body portion may be-constructed of any suitable material which may be readily formed into the desired shape, the body being hollow to support the movable parts of the operating mechanism.
As clearly shown by the drawing, the forward end of the body 5 is provided with an opening through which the neck 6 of the head of the toy extends, the neck 6 being provided with an opening through which the shaft or pin 1 extends,
the shaft or pin 1 being supported in openings formed in the body 5.
The head of the animal simulated by the toy, is indicated by the reference character 8, the head being hollow and formed with an extension 9 shaped to simulate the upper jaw of the duck. An opening is formed directly under the extension 9, through which the movable jaw l0 extends,
- the jaw [0 being pivotally mounted on the pin II which extends transversely of the hollow head, at a point substantially centrally of its ends. At the rear end of the movable jaw Ill and beyond the pivot point of the movable jaw is a weight l2 which is constructed to normally over-balance the forward end of the movable jaw, to cause the movable jaw to swing to a position to contact with the upper jaw or extension 9, when the head has moved rearwardly as shown by Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Extending from the neck portion 6 is a downwardly and rearwardly curved arm I3 which ex-,
tends to a point to be engaged by the cam 14 which is secured to the shaft IS on which the wheels [6 are mounted. The wheels [6 are secured to the shaft [5 so that rotary movement of the wheels produces a relative rotary movement of the shaft and cam I4.
As clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings, the shaft 15 is mounted in bearings which are formed in the body portion, the wheels l6 being eccentrically mounted on the shaft 15, and so arranged with respect to each that as the body is pulled along over a supporting surface, the movements of the wheels will tend to transmit a wobbling movement to the body simulating the movements of a waddling duck.
To further lend to the reality of the toy, a vibrant element I1 is provided, the vibrant element ll being in the form of a spring member extended through an opening in the lug I8 that extends upwardly within thebody of the toy, from the bottom thereof. One end of the member I! is disposed in the path of travel of the cam I4, as it is rotating, with the result I that with each rotation of the cam Hi, the eleoperate the sounding mechanism but it will cause the head of the toy to swing forwardly and rearwardly. With each movement of the head for-' wardly, the lower jaw will be swung downwardly to the position as shown by Figure 4, whereupon the'pivoted jaw will be caused to swing to the position shown by Figure 3 of the drawings when the head is swung rearwardly due to the action of the cam,
3 Having thus described the invention what is claimed is: y
A figured mechanical toy comprising a body, a head pivotally connected to the body, a stationary upper jaw formed on the head, a movable lower jaw pivotally mounted centrally of its ends, said movable lower jaw being the sole movable part within the head, a weight formed at the inner end- 0f the lower jaw, within th'e'head and adapted to move the lower jaw: to its-open and-- closed positions as the head moves forwardly and rearwardly, and mechanical means for moving-r;
the head in one direction against the action of the weighted pivoted jaw.
