l This invention relates to a holder of the clasp type adapted to be worn or carried by a person to Secure layers of materials together; for example, the wearers tie and adjacent portion of his shirt, folded currency or papers in a pocket case; the holder bein of sectional construction so as to incorporate therein a utility device, which may consist of a knife, nail file or other serviceable element.

One object of the invention is to provide an improved holder of this type consisting of end wise related main and closure-sections adapted to be ornamentally embossed, whereby it ma be exposed to view whenworn by a person, one end ofthe main section supporting the shank of a utility device-and the closure section slidably and removably fitting the sides of the utility device and enclosing the latter and the opposite end of the main section being extended and reversely bent to provide a presser member in engagement with the closure section to hold it in position and co-operate therewith and the main section to clasp layers of materials between them.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved holder of this type consisting of a sectional bar adapted to be provided with ornamental features, one section supporting at one end the shank of a utility device and the other section slidably and removably fitting the sides of the device to enclose the latter and for endwise relation with the first section to provide an wardly bent portion, which forms a yieldable presser member in engagement with the other section to hold it in position and an outwardly bent portion related to the inwardly bent portion toprovide a support for the other section when removed to prevent misplacement or loss of the latter.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved holder of this type consisting of two sections, one of which rigidly supports the shank of a utility device, the other section being slidably and removably mounted on the utility' device for endwise relation with one end of the. first section to form a continuous bar and the opposite end" of the first section being extended and reversely bent to provide a presser memberin engagement with the other section, whereby it co-operates with theutility device to hold the other section in position.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved combination holder of this type 3 Claims. (Cl. 2449) 2 consistin of few parts, one only of which is movable, these parts, when assembled, being rigidly related to function as a clasp andwhen the movable part is removed the other part serves as a handle, whereby the utility device may be employed.

In the drawing, l indicates as an entirety a holder comprising a-main section 2 and a separable section 3 in endwise relation thereto to give the appearance of a relatively long unitary bar, the front face of which is adapted to be provided with ornamental features which may be of any desired character to providev different artistic effects. The sections 2 and 3 may be made of any suitable material.

: In the preferred form, I provide the front faces of either or both sections 2, 3, with transverse grooves 2a spaced from the adjoining ends of the sections and each other, and the ends of the sections are slightlybeveled or relieved so as to give the joint the appearance of a groove 2a, the eye-efi'ect of which is to substantially hide the joint which results where the sections are related and hence gives the appearance of a solid, continuous ornamented bar. The sections 2; 3, are substantially of rectangular shape in cross section. The front end'portion of the main section 2 is hollow to receive and support the inner end portion of the shank 5 of a utility device 5a. The shank 5 is flat in crosssection and the walls of the hollow portion of the section 2 are engaged with the shank 5 under pressure to rigidly secure the device in position. The utility device 511 is, for illustrative purposes shown as consisting of a knife. The separable bar section 3 is hollow andclosed at its outer end and slidably and removably fits the side edges of the exposed portion of the shank 5, so that when the separate section is in position its inner or open end abuts the inner end of the section 2,

as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. As thewalls of the 2, 3, when assembled end to end give the appearance of a single, continuous bar. The opposite end of the main section z is provided with a clip 6 preferably formed integrally therewith and reversely bent in the plane of the main section 2. The clip 6 is of a length to extend beyond the inner end'of the main section 2 and terminates ina presser shaped tip 1 in engagement with the rear wall or face of the separable section 3.' As. the material of the main section 2 is slightly resilient, the presser I normally yieldably' presses against the separable section to hold the latter on the device 5a, but permits layers of materiaLto be projected between it and the'barto'clasp them, as shown in- Fig. 2. When the holder 1 is in use and clasping materials, the presser i operates throughthe latter to hold the separable section in position. It will be observed that the presser is formed by curving the outerend portion of the clip member 6 inwardly toward the bar for engagement with the separable section 3 to support that portion of the clip between the presser l and outer end of the main section 2 in spaced relation to the latter, so as to adapt the bar and presser .to receive a plurahty of layers of the materials between theni; likewise, when the separable section is removed this spacing of the clip 6 and section 2 provides anenlarged handle to facilitate the use of the utility device 5a.

The rear wall or face of the separable section 3 is'formed with transverse grooves 5:0 and the opposite longitudinal edges of the extension 6 are formed with notches 6:13, whereby they may be adequately gripped when the section 3 is to be removed or replaced.

Figs. 6 and 7 illustrate a modified form of construction in which the clip 6 is of a length to provide an inner portion 6a and an outer portion 61), reversely bent relative to the inner portion, both portions being disposed substantially parallel 'to the plane of the bar section 2, so that when the utility device 5a is in use these portions and the section 2 form a handle. The outer end of the inner portion 6a is bent inwardly to provide the presser 1, whereas the outer portion 61) forms a support for the separable section 3 when the latter is removed from the' device 5a, so that danger of the section 3 being misplaced or lost is minimized. The separable section 3 may be frictionally held on the support 61) or held thereon by detent means comprising complementary embossments 8, 8a.

Figs. 8, 9 and 10 illustrate a difierent modification wherein the opposite ends of a flexible member, such as a. chain 9, are suitably connected to the opposite outer ends of the main section 2 and removable section 3. This form of holder may be worn as shown in Fig. 9. As the section 4 3 is permanently connected through the chain 9 to the section 2, danger of its being misplaced or lost is eliminated and the necessity of operating a pivoted dog or engaging a hook in an Opening is avoided. When this form of holder is to be used as a tie holder and an article of adornment, the holder is positioned on the wearers shirt or other garment and thereafter the tie is inserted behind the chain. As the section 3 encloses the device 5d when the holder is positioned, danger of damaging the shirt or other garment is eliminated.

To those skilled in the art to which my invention relates many changes in construction and widely differin embodiments of the invention will be apparent without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purely illustrative and not intended to be in any sense limiting.

.What I claim is: e Y r 1. In a holder of the class described, a bar structure comprising a pair of elongated separable sections normally disposed in longitudinallyalined end-to-end relationship, one of said bar sections having the shank of a longitudinally projecting utility device rigidly secured to and extending from one of itsends, the other of said bar sections being of tubular formation and open at one end, whereby it may be slipped over the utility device to enclose the same with the .open

end portion of such bar section frictionally engaging the shank portion of said device and abutting the end of the first mentioned bar section; and a resilient clip member carried by said first mentioned bar section-in substantially parallel spaced relation to the rear thereof, said clip member having an offset presser portion disposed adjacent to and adapted to exert pressure upon the portion of the said tubular bar section which is engaged with the utility device shank.

2. A holder as claimed in claim 1, wherein the clip member is also provided with a reversely bent element extending from said oifset presser portionin substantially parallel relation to the rear of the clip member, for receiving and holding the tubular bar section when the latter is removed from its device-enclosing position.

3. A holder as claimed in claim 1 wherein the opposite ends of a chain are pivotally connected to the opposite outer ends of the respective bar sections.
