HOWARD B. EMERSON, OF GHARLESIOWN, MASSACHUSETTS.
RAzoR-sTRoP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,199, dated January 10, 1882.
Application filed October 3, 1881. (No model.) i
' of Charlestown, in the county of Suiolk'and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in RaZor-Strops, of which the following is a specification.
rI`he object of my invention is to produce a 4razor-strop which shall combine the features of a hone, a tablet, an elastic curved surface, and an adjustable band or strap 5 and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a strop embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same with the curved elastic face removed to sllow the movable plate. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line xof Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the movable plate detached.
Arepresenis a block ,forming the body of strop, and made of wood or other suitable material. To three sides of the body A are attached severally the hard surface D, forming a hone, the smooth surface C, forming a tablet, and the curved elastic surface B, as indicated in Fig. 3.
E, Fig. l, is a strip of wood or block insert ed in a mortise or recess, E', Fig. 2, and firmly secured therein and extending above the upper surface of the body A, as seen in Fig. l.
` To the outer face ofthe block E is attached one end of a band or strap, F, the other end of which is secured by rivets h or otherwise to theplate G. This plate, which may be thin sheet metal or other suitable material and of the shape shown in Fig. 4, is itted to slide at its longer portion iu a recess, L, formed in the bottom of the body A. The end of the sliding or longer portion of plate G is provided with a slot, g, through which passes a setscrew, H, by means of which the plate G is maintained in proper position as it slides to and fro.
I is ascrew attached to the handle K and passing through a hole, i, in the upright portion of plate G, which hole serves as a female screw, so that by 'turning the handle K the plate G may be moved forward or hack to tighten or loosen the band F, as desired. The plate G is further guided and held in position 4by the backin g of the curved elastic piece B,
which is secured to the body A.
I do not claim a flexible strap adjusted by means of a screw attached to the handle, as I am aware that such has been long in use. I am also aware thatit is Ilot new to place stropping and honing surfaces on the several sides ot' a razor-strop, and also that tlexible bands have becnused, and such, consequently, I do not claim; but
What I do claim as my invention is In a razor-strop, the combination ofthe body A, having mortise E and recess L, the block E, inserted in said mortise, the right-angled plate G, adapted to slide in the recessL, and provided with opening i, slot g, and screw H,
the flexible band F, secured to the block E,` land sliding plate G, and the handle K, having screw I, adapted to engage with the threaded opening 'i and tighten the band F by moving the sliding plate, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this spccilcation in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
l HOWARD B. EMERSON.
