BRACKET AND STANDARD LAMP.
Patented J an. 1U, 1882..

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. WHITE, F NEW YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR ATO THE- MANHATTAN BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BRACKET AND STANDARD LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,162, dated January 10,1882.
Application filed July 18, 18H1. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. WHITE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bracket and Standard Lamps,
of which the following is a specitication.
Lamps have been made with the standard and reservoir connected by pivots, so that the lamp may be supported above the standard, or
the base may be suspended'by a hook against 1o a wall so that the standard is horizontal, and
in some instances a springlatch has been employed to prevent the parts turning on the pivots when the standard is either horizontal or vertical.
I5 My present invention is for rendering the connection between thereservoir and the standard more firm and reliable, and for avoiding sprin gs and catches that are liable to be broken or accidentally moved.
zo In th'e drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of the lamp at thejoint between the standard and the reservoir, the dotted lines showing the 'position of the parts when the standard is horizontal; and Fig. 2 is a view partially in section ot' the connecting parts at right angles to Fig. 1.
The standard a and base b are of any desired size, shape, or character. So also are the reservoir c and burner d. The yoke c, pivot-bar I,-and nut 7c are preferably cast lin one piece of metal. There is a socket or connecting thimble, l, between the nut 7c .and the reservoir c,
the parts being soldered or oherwise fastened together. The screw n passes through the nut 43,5 k, and it isprovided with a thumb-wheel, o,
and conical end r. The bart' that forms the pivot isround where it rests in the notches at the upper end of the standard c, and there is a hemispherical cap, s, to the top ofthe standard. This is notched so as to pass down around the pivot-bearings, and it is to be soldered in place at the top end ot' the standard after the yoke c, the screw a, and the pivot-bar 'L' have been pnt in place. In the surface of the cap s there a1 e recesses, one at the center of the cap, 4 5 as at 2, and the other at one side of the cap,
as at 3.
When the reservoir is to be held vertically above the standard the. screw is turned down, and its conical end enters the recess 2 and 5o clamps the parts firmly in place. When the standard is turned oft' horizontally the Vparts are locked in that position by the screw n being turned back so that its conical end enters the recess 3.
Projecting from the pivot-bar fi there is an arm or pin, u, within the standard, located as represented in Fig. I, so that it forms a stop against the interior of the standard when itis turned into either a horizontal or a vertical 6o position. This causes the parts to stop in such a position that the recess 2 or 3 will be inline with the screw when the same is to be turned back for entering such recess and locking the parts together.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the standard and reservoir, ot the yoke e, pivot-bar ,nut 7c, screw n, and cap s, having the recesses 2 and 3, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 7o
2. Theyoke e, pivot-bar t', and arm a, in coinbination with the standard a, reservoir b, and screw u, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 13th day of' July, A. l).
