DANIEL MURRAY, OF FAIRFIELD, NORTH CAROLINA.
MODE F MEASURING GRAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,212, dated August 23, 1859*.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL MURRAY, of F airfield, in the county of Hyde, in the State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Measuring Grain; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked therein, in which Figure l is a side elevation and Fig. 2 an end elevation.
The nature of my invention consists in the movable slides for cutting off the grain as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the construction of my invention in Fig. 1, A is the frame. B is the hopper. C is the box in which the grain is measured. D is the discharge; a, the upper arm; I), the upper slide, Fig. 2, (Z, the levers connecting the slide with the arms and which operate on points as a hinge joint or cut ofl E, the middle guard in which the arm operates; F, an upper guard to which it may be placed when moved up; It, the lower arm; f, the lower slide or cut off G, the lower guard in which the arm operates; I, slots in box C for the slides to operate in. K is the fulcrum of the arms which is attached to frame A; Z Z, washers between the arms a and h. The upper may be moved up to make the arms farther apart when necessary as hereinafter described; m, keys for keeping the front pieces of the frame which are movable in their places or on their tenons.
In F ig, 2 like parts are described by same letters.
In operating my machine, when I commence to measure grain I remove the upper slide to let the grain in the hopper C till the box is filled above the upper slide or cut off and then the upper slide is pushed in and remains till the lower slide is removed and grain discharged when it is returned to its place. \Vhen I wish to measure double the quantity I remove the rod constituting the fulcrum, out of the arms, then remove the upper arm and slide and place them in the upper slot I and guard F and then place the washer below the arm aand then place the rod or fulcrum as before when it is ready to operate measuring twice the quantity. The dotted lines show the operation of the slides in box C. The arm is connected with the slide by two joints which allows the slides to run in a direct line in box C.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The arrangement of the arms a and h in combination with the slides 32 and f constructed and operating as described and for the purposes set forth.
DANIEL MURRAY.
