To this end, wood side rails l8 and I9 are afiixed to the side rails 13 and I2, and end rails 20 are attached to the outer rails l4 and to the outer ends of the wood rails l8 and IS. The adjacent ends of the rails |8--!8 and I 9-19 of the bed frame sections AB are adapted to abut each other when the frames G-G are in their extended position, which abutments serve to limit the relative swinging movement of the frames G-G on the hinges I! in one direction.
Connected to the end rails 20 of the bed frame are the end frames or panels C and D which are attached to the rails 20 by hinges 2! so that the crib ends may be disposed either in an upward position relative to the rails 20 or swung inwardly toward each other to a folded position overlying the bed frame sections A and B.
The side frames E and F each embodies top and bottom rails 22 and 23 respectively, preferably but not necessarily formed of sections a and b, and c and d, with the sections a and b united by hinges 24 and the sections and d united by hinges 25 so that the s'idefrarnes may be folded intermediate their ends as indicated in Fig. 9, and thus brought into overlying relation to each other. The rails 22 and 23 of the side frames E and F are united by slats 26 or in any other conventional fashion common in the construction of. thev side frames of baby cribs.
. An important feature of the invention resides in the mode of effecting detachable engagement between the side frames EF and the side rails of the bed frame sections A and B and also with the end frames C and D, when disposing the parts in their assembled position, so as to producea strong stable assembled structure. As a means of effecting detachable interconnection between the bottom rails 23 of the frames E and F andthe rails 18-48, and Ill-l9 of the bed frames, the rails l8-I8 and I9--l9 are provided With sockets 21 and the rails 23 are provided with downwardly projecting pins 28 arranged for detachable interengagement with the sockets 21 as particularly shown in Fig. 5.
The frames E and F are formed of a length such that the ends thereof will abut the inner faces of the crib ends C and D when the latter are disposed in their upright position perpendicular to the bed frame sections AB as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and as a means for effecting interconnection between the ends of the top rails 22 and the crib ends C--D the latter are fitted with screws J each of which embodies a shank 29 carried on a head 30 with the shank extending through the crib end with the head 30 disposed on the outer side of the crib end. The shank 2 9 is formed to project from the inner face of the crib. .end and is threaded for screw engagement with an internally threaded socket 3| mounted inthe end of the rail 22 as particularly shown in Fig. 4.v The shank 29 is carried in a bearing 32. mounted on the crib end and is normally urgedto its advanced position by a spring 33 wound around the stem 29 and exerting a thrust between the outer end of the bearing 32 and a flange 34 fixed on the stem 29. The screws J are thus retractable in opposition to the springs 23. The screws J are also utilized as a means for fastening the crib ends C and D in their folded positionagainst the bed frame sections AB as shown in Figs. "1' and 8; the-bedframe-rails 18 4 and [9 being fitted with internally threaded sockets 35 positioned to receive and be engaged by the threaded shanks 29 of the screws J as shown in Fig. 8 when'the crib ends C and D abut the rails I8 and I9.
The crib is equipped at each of the corner portions thereof with detachable legs K, each of which is provided with a threaded stem 36 protruding axially from an end thereof, which stem is detachably engageable with an internally threaded socket 31 in a nut 38 affixed to the outer corner of each of the frames G as particularly shown in Fig. 10.
In the operation of the invention in setting up the crib the bed frame sections A and B are disposed in longitudinal alignment with each other and the crib ends C and D are swung to their upright position whereupon the side rails E and F in their extended positions are seated on the side rails l8--l8 and |9I9 of the bed frame with the-pins 28 engaging the sockets 2 1. The crib ends C and D may be sprung outwardly sufficiently to permit the shanks 29 of the screws J to pass the ends of the rails 22 to position the outer ends of the threaded shanks 29 of the screws for entrance into the sockets 3|, or the screws may be retracted. by. exerting a pull on the heads 38 so that the threaded shanks 29 will clear the ends of the rails 22, In either event, on a threaded shank 29 being positioned in the outer end of a socket 31 it is manipulated by rotating the head 30 to cause the threaded shank 29 to advance into the socket 3| into screw engagement therewith. The: screws are thus manipulated so as to tightly clamp the ends C and D against the ends of the rails 22. When this is effected the superstructure of the crib composed of the crib e'nds C and D and the side frames E and F will be rigidly supported on the bed frame sections A and B. The pins 28 engaging the sockets 21 afiord a substantial interconnection between the side rails E and F and the bed frame, while the screws J afford a substantial connection between the outer ends of the side rails and thecribends. The several parts are'thus assembled in close abutting relation thereby thoroughly stabilizing the structure.
When it is decided to elevate the crib from the fioor the legs K are applied to the frames G' by screwing'the threaded stems 36 on the legs into the sockets 31 so that the upper ends of the legs will abut the under side of the frames G. A strong and rigid interconnection is thus effected between the legs and the crib.
When it is desired to fold the crib into a compact package the legs K are removed from the bed frame sections, the side rails E and F are detached by unscrewing the'scr-ews J from the engagement with side rails 22 and then lifting the side rails free of the bed frame in which operation the pins 28 are withdrawn from the sockets 21. The sections of the side rails may then be folded to overlie each other as indicated The bed frame sections A and B may then be folded into abutting relation with each other on the hinges l1 connecting the frames G. Th parts will then be disposed as shown in Fig. '7. When thus folded the crib may be disposed with the end rails 20 of the bed frame sections A and B presented forwardly and with the inner end portions of the bed frame sections presented upwardly thus forming inclosures on opposite sides of the folded bed spring frame in which the side rails E and F and the legs K togethe with bedding may be confined.
As a means for facilitating standing of the folded structure in an upright position, short legs or knobs 39 are mounted on the outer faces of the outer end portions of the bed frame end rails 20.
Manifestly when the crib is in its folded position it will form a compact package which is capable of being readily transported from place to place; the crib being highly suitable for use by travelers, and particularly those traveling in automobiles and those living in auto courts, hotels, small apartments, auto trailers, and the like, where either baby cribs are not supplied or where space is limited.
While I have shown, and described a specifi embodiment of my invention I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction set forth, and the invention embraces such changes, modifications and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claims.
I claim:
