(c1. mese) w This invention relates to an improved hat holder, the primary object being to provide a durable and sanitary device which can be easily and quickly attached to a side Wall surface and which is adapted normally to hold a hat with its brim at against said surface and when swung outwardly and upwardly to release the hat downwardly. Another object is to provide a unique body support for the hinged band which is sightly and which engages the hat and is adaptable for eicient use and inexpensive manufacture. Among further objects is maximum simplicity of construction and increased effectiveness in use.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing my improved hat holder mounted upon a vertical side wall surface of a building or other structure and supporting a hat; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a detail showing the body support of my improved hat holder and a portion of the hat engaging band when in normal position; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the body support and a portion of the hat supporting band, when the latter is raised in position to receive or release a hat; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the two sections constituting the body support in separated position before being assembled and when applied in use; Fig. 5 is an inside elevational view of the left hand section of the body support shown in Fig. Ll; Fig. 6 is an inside elevational view of the right hand section of the body support shown in Fig. fl; Fig. 7 is a medial vertical sectional view taken thru the right hand section of the body support of Fig. 4, as seen along the line I--1 of Fig. 6.

The body support is indicated as a whole by the reference ordinal A, and the hat supporting band is indicated as a Whole by the ordinal B. The body A is composed ofvtwo rectangular sections l and II (Fig. (l), corresponding substantially in surface shape and adapted to be juxtaposed face to face as shown in Fig. 3, and fastened together by a single supporting screw or pin such as I2, said screw being adapted to be driven in to a side wall surface such as I3 to which the hat support is fastened for use as shown in Fig. 1.

The hat supporting band B is composed of a narrow flexible strip I4, of sufcient enveloping size to embrace the crown of a hat such as C, adjacent to its brim I5, as shown in Fig. l, and is formed with a pair of adjacent end portions I6 which are hinged by a pintle I 'I in the front section II of the body support as hereinafter described. The end Iportions I5 of the band'are offset outwardly at an obtuse angle to the plane of the band and are hinged by the pintle I'I in a vertical slot or channel I8 which enters the front side of the lower portion of the front member I I. A transverse horizontal groove or channel I9 in the back face of member I I forms a socket or seat in which said pintle Il is held when the two supporting sections I0 and II are juxtaposed and fastened together. The channel I8 is extended by the portion 20 into the rearward member I0 of the body support and provides clearance space for the inner end portions VI5 of the band I4 to permit free rotating or swinging action on said pintle. The inner end portions I6 are at and placed side by side against each other and overlap the joint between the members I0 and I I so as to cooperate in holding the body members registered together and from rotating separately about the axis of the screw fastener I2. The obtuse angle to the :plane of the body portion of the band at which the end portions I6 are arranged serves to limit the swinging movement of the hat supporting band above horizontal position by contact against the upper and outward end portion of the vertical channel I8, as indicated in Fig. 3.

The above structure is favorable for the use of plastic material Which produces ornamental appearance and is sanitary, it being understood however that any suitable material may be employed for producing the parts within the spirit of the invention. Constructing the body support in two sections as above described is highly favorable for casting or molding the parts without machining, thus reducing cost of manufacture to a minimum. The body support A is adapted to be fastened by the screw I2 to any side wall surface such as I3, with the band B hanging downwardly in normal vertical position close to the wall surface Where it is out of the way. When it is desired to hang Va hat the band is swung outwardly and upwardly approaching horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 3. The crown of the hat is inserted upwardly in the band and the band and hat allowed to swing downwardly by gravity until the rim of the hat rests against the surface of the Wall as shown in Fig. 1.

Modications are contemplated within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A hat holder adapted to support the crown of a hat in a free-hanging position along an upright wall Without pressing the brim thereof against the wall, comprising in combination: a

pair of juxtaposed members having a fastening element adapted jointly to secure a face of the first of said members to the wall and to secure said other member to the opposite faee of said rst member, one of said members being formed with a transverse socket opening into the plane of imposition of the two members, and said other imposed member having an upright slot extending transversely outward from said socket; a. pintle seated in said socket and held in place by the juxtaposition of said members along the plane of imposition; and a hat-embracing band having two flat ,ends similarly apertured and receiving said pintle jointly therethrough, whereby the ends may swing about the pintle axis in said upright slot to position the band for insertion and removal of a hat.

4 position so as to project into the slot of said other member and be thus restrained against lateral torsional movement and simultaneously to re-l strain the :pair of members against misalignment.
