ELBRIDGE FOSTER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
EASY- CHAIR.
T o all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE FOSTER, of the city of Hartford, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Mode of Constructing Easy-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to t-he accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of a quadrant slide to lower, raise, and adjust the back of a chair.A
To enable others to make and use my invent-ion I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The drawing Figure l is a side view of the chair back raised up; Fig. 2 a side view of the same lowered down, with dotted lines to represent the different positions to which the back can be adjusted.
The general construction of my quadrant adjustable back easy chair is mechanically as other chairs. My improvement is in the back A, being independent of the body eX-A cept as being connected by the hinge joint B, at. the back of the seat.
I form and attach a metallic quadrant shaped slide C, to enter the scroll armsbf the chair side, in a groove in the center of the same. This arc or quadrant is serrated on the underside to hold on to the lever catch E, to retain the back in any required position. The lever catch E, has a projection below the arms D, to be operated on by the lingers when required. I/Vhen it is required to alter the position of the back, the only way is by the pressure of the fingers of each hand on the lever F, which will allow the slide C, to draw out and the back fall to its required position. In the center of the back I attach a vertical rail I, with a groove in the center to receive' the adjustable center leg G. This leg G is hung with a joint to the upper end of the groove in the rail I and is Hush with the back when the same is up or the back is not inclined enough to need support. Vhen the leg G is required to be used for the support of the back, a
bolt K or other device is removed and leg quired for the different positions of the back and held in position by the spring M.
The utility of this improvement in easy chairs is in the economy and simplicity of construction and the facility with which it can be instantly, easily, and quietly converted from an upright ordinary back position to a series of inclined positions to accommodate the ease and comfort of the occupant be they in good health or restlessly sick, even down to forming a comfortable level couch to repose on.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The application and insertion of the quadrant slide into the center of each of the arms or scroll of the side rail, so as to be unseen when the back is up in the manner as herein described, also the application of the spring adjustable and extension back center` leg, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein set forth and described, the whole constituting a new article of manufacture for household use.
ELBRIDGE FOSTER.
